United vs Bullets, Mar 5

Bullets up against it without Sobey and facing the league leaders. United have won their last four.

Brisbane will struggle without Sobey, but will still play the odd pearler. Hopefully that's tonight and we get a cracker.

@Dunkman. Can't see a 20 point win but it should be a win. United not that good to win by that much.

United playing like they just got turn to win. Brisbane really having a go. Again it's a crapy game.

Half time. 37-36 Bullets. Obviously a close game at this stage but seriously the level of play isn't great. Bullets doing well early. Let’s see if they can go with the short odds United all the way to the finish line.

I've said if previously & I’ll bore you all again. The NBL level these days is pretty poor. There a several good players throughout the league but simply not enough. Instead of the league getting better it is not improving. Games are normally playing to a lower level instead of lifting to a higher level during the game. Better teams are falling to the level of the lower teams in games. Not great

This has been a dour game

Still thinking United needs another creative go-to scorer on a wing to win this title

Agree 100% Jatz, imo some of the imports are just not good enough. Teams should be 10 and 2 again. Keep next stars and Asian players rule.

Actually enjoying the more reserved commentary from homicide.

Good to see Digbeu get some real minutes finally.

Meanwhile the woeful play from Krebs continues.

Adding teams spreads the talent thinner, but that shouldn't drop the import standard too much. Are there more opting for the G-League?

We've gone back to the 2013-style "let them play" officiating. It's not helping.

@Jatz, it's certainly an interesting viewpoint. Some of the passages of play in games look very average, turnover/turnover/air ball...but I personally feel the standard of the NBL has improved significantly. When you look at a Delly returning and playing "solid" ball but not staring, G league “stars” like Dusty struggling, mid-range imports such as Tate/Sykes getting NBA gigs, quality next stars and legitimate bigs off the bench it all indicates a higher standard in terms of players. In terms of officiating I actually prefer games where the refs let the players play, minimal calls and some contact allowed. More of a finals style. Maybe this does contribute to drop off in playing style however.

There is an important difference between 'standard' and 'spectacle'.

In the 2019 and 2020 seasons, when the game was officiated tightly, scoring was high, % were high, turnovers were low and the spectacle was excellent.

This season, with lots of contact being let go, scoring and % drop, turnovers increase and the spectacle is not as good.

There is very little difference in the standard of teams between those years, just how much freedom from contact the offence gets to put on a good show.

I'm not sure why the NBL has allowed Scott Butler and Co to change the officiating to allow so much more contact, it does nothing to promote the league as an entertainment product.
