2021 VC Teams

10 Teams - Dandenong

9 Teams - Hawthorn, Eltham, Casey, Nunawading, Frankston

8 Teams - Melbourne, Knox

7 Teams - Bulleen, Kilsyth, Keilor, Sandringham

6 Teams - DV, Geelong Utd, McKinnon, Waverley

5 Teams - Ballarat, Camberwell,

4 Teams - Bendigo, Mornington,

3 Teams - Latrobe, Sunbury,

2 Teams - Altona, Coburg, Whittlesea

1 Team - Blackburn, Broadmeadows, Craigieburn, Pakenham, Ringwood, SP

Any surprises here ? I think Casey has done well over the past few years and seem to be putting more in VC every year. Frankston improved from previous years? Ringwood only one ?

Clubs with no teams in VC include:
Bacchus Marsh, Bellarine, Chelsea, Collingwood, Ivanhoe, Doncaster, Keysborough, Melton, Oakleigh, Sherbrooke, Wallan, Warrandyte, Western Port, Werribee/Wyndham

Biggest surprise here would be Werribee/Wyndham with no teams ?

Hawthorn disaster
SP disaster
Mornington concern
Bendigo concern
What's happened?

Impressive Casey, bulleen, Gippsland, Wyndham, camberwell

What are they doing?

Casey is in a growth corridor with good facilities but still good to see them doing well.
Bulleen is historically a strong club. With a strong program.
Gibsland is a strong country area and has been for quite awhile.
Wyndham used to be Werribee which is quite a strong area with quite a bit of growth plus fantastic facilities.
And Camberwell have probably benefited from the downfall of Hawthorn.

The clubs that are 'strong' are 'strong' primarily because the best players happen to choose to go there. Trust me, it has little to do with the quality of coaching.

Big misses for Knox in U14 and U16 girls

Fox87,

I would add Knox to your list...a decrease from 10 to 8 to 6 is not very good at all.

That is a big drop off
Improvement by Kilsyth

The clubs that have been putting in the work in their development pathways are the ones that are delivering.

Frankston, Nunawading, Kilsyth and Sandringham are all reaping the rewards of the efforts put in during COVID lockdowns.

Some of the teams with drop offs... like Knox. Are also having situations with 3 teams grading in the same grade (and not exactly a high one). Makes you wonder what on earth is happening with their team selections, player development and coaching.
I believe Knox had a similar thing last year with their 14.1 Boys not making VC, but their 2s made it and were competitive.

Well done to those with improvement, and how about Korumburra getting 2/4 teams into VC and a third making VJL1.

2s teams never do particularly well in VC and may be better off in VJB1. Sometimes you need to be careful what you wish for. Have seen 2s teams demolished in VC, and heard about one last year being beaten by a team with 4 players on the court.
Hawthorn have dropped badly, but they do have some v good teams left and will no doubt have success.
Not sure what's happening at Knox - they have a large area to pull from and should be more dominant.
Melbourne did v well on the girls side - all through.
Sandringham have done well. Had some financial difficulty a few years back but seem to have a good set up now.

Hawthorn is the interesting one....how can Magic be sustainable with no domestic program sitting underneath? Young kids will presumably gravitate to the Camberwell program where they play domestically.

Feels like they are in run-off…the kids there now will finish up over next 4-5 year or whatever and then non-existence?

I'm not 100% sure but don't Melbourne Tigers operate without a junior association underpinning it.

Yes, Tigers are in that boat and probably a good example of why it's not sustainable. Been in decline for a while now.

BV have intervened and created a new Association based at MSAC that will feed into the Tigers program. Melbourne Central Basketball Association.

A big association like Knox won't have any problems becoming a powerhouse again, they just need a sustained run of being well managed and the size of their domestic competition will do the rest. They have had a exodus of girls which has caused the decline, there are 3 former Knox girls trying out for the State u16 team tomorrow as an example. Melbourne will be fine because of its legacy and the contribution of all the former players that stay involved. I think Hawthorn are in trouble though. McKinnon is another that has done very well, they don't even have their own courts and only just missed on their u18 girls making VC, which would have taken them to 7 teams.

Intersting that Knox has declined so significantly under the management of the much maligned ex-BSA HP Manager.

As Sturt did in the few recent years under the current one.

BSA picking the best of the best as usual.

Would be interesting to see the clearance lists to see which clubs have benefited from moves.

Does anyone know how to access the clearance lists? Since BV moved to playhq much of what used to be available is now not.

What is interesting is the number of boys chosen for Vic trials.

Frankston - 6
Hawthorn - 6
Dandenong - 3
Melbourne, Keilor, Kilsyth, Knox - 2
Bullen, Mornington, Casey, Craigieburn - 1

Under 16 VC teams without any kids selected. Obviously don't have strong DCs.

Blackburn
Diamond Valley
Eltham
McKinnon
Waverley
Wyndham

So, why are the selections so skewed?

Because the kids at the other clubs aren't good enough. Simple.

Kanga also interesting to look at country side of things.
Country girls state trials
Korumburra Geelong Warrnambool tralagon 4
Sale Ballarat 2
Bendigo Southern Pen 1
Other 6 associations with 1.

Geelong tralagon expected. Korumburra Warrnambool outperforming

Ballarat Bendigo poor results for big associations
Same as southern pen one of biggest country associations and only one? Big drop

Boys
Geelong 3
Warrnambool Bendigo Shepparton 2
Phillip island, keilor, DV, Wangaratta, Seymour, Sunbury, Mildura, bellarine, Mornington, Macedon, Horsham, pakenham

Tralagon, sale southern pen none. Really need to look at the programs of Bendigo, Ballarat, sth pen. Clearly not producing high performance players despite being big associations

Ballarat have 14 boys, 18 Boys, 14, 16 and 18 girls in Vc. They don't have 12’s in vjbl keep in mind.

Southern pen were big as far as players in programs on the back of the previous good coaches they had running the place. It was always going to drop off when G left. They aren’t a big association.

Bendigo will be fine.

Covid numbers for some clubs that aren’t as high probably a big factor

Like the idea of a formula to rank Associations at the conclusion of each season. Gives people a good idea of the rise and fall in Association strength. Looking at the VC results is great, and we can see the improvement and decline in some clubs, but it's only a small snapshot.
