FIBA U18 ASIA CHAMPS 2022 B + G

This tournament is in less than a months time and we still haven't heard anything.
Nz, China, Korea, Japan, India teams announced.

This tournament made up of 04/05 athletes, sometimes double bottom agers 06.
Could we possibly see Zikarsky(06) from the boys and Shiels from the girls(06) make it?

It seems Australia and nz have forfeited this tournament.

Pretty disgraceful by BA when they knew well in advance the tournament could be held in iran.

Groups are now

A
Iran
Japan
Lebanon

B
China
Korea
India

C
Taipei
Phillipines
Syria
Korea

Pretty disgraceful to force a Country to send under aged athletes to Iran. No matter the timing, fully support the stance of both BA and New Zealand.

Not when the venue could have been changed months ago via fiba approval.

You don't know what conversations have been going on behind the scenes. Not something they'd talk about publicly.

To assume BA just pulled this team last minute without ever raising concerns is not very likely.

They did pull out last minute, they even listed the final 15 players on fiba.

Australia's involvement in this tournament has been up in the air for a long time. Yes they ticked off all the FIBA administrative requirements but it was obvious from a long way out they were never attending.

If you know well in advance where the tournament will be held and it is deemed a security risk back then, the venue can be moved to a different location. Either poor admin by BA or they've done a deal which oceania teams auto qualify for next year.

The girls side should be fine given the tournament is in India on the 5th September.

FIBA control where the host venue is not Australia

Thankyou, I'm aware of that but requests for change of venue can be made if security is a factor. The Aus government has deemed Iran as a security risk for sometime, ba long ago could have suggested jordan which were the previous chosen hosts before it changed to iran. Given india qualified and Jordan did not they could have also held both mens n womens tournaments at the same time.
Will be interesting to see what BA say if and when a statement is made.

If you knew anything about the current climate the Asian countries do not want Australia nor New Zealand in the FIBA Asia zone so they are hardly going to accommodate any request for change of venue.

Yes I see on other forums that they are happy, obviously it increases the chances of them making top 4 and the WC.
Still don't know the back room deals that have been made by nz/Aus.

For some reason Rotunno replaces Clark.

Little depth given what other 04/05 talent is outthere.

Out
Clark - ?
Brazel - inj

Thought Clark did well for 17's.

Was down at Nationals and besides Foy and Hall, no one else really stood out.

Hassett is in the states at college.

Not sure why you wouldn't take triple bottom ager hall...
They took 1999 Magbegor in 2015 for the u19 wc.

Better defender, lightning quick. Offers so much more.

Pg Rotunno replacing a g/f in Clark is odd. Shiels was the pg at u17 WC so you have 3 pgs in this side already. thought Ananiev would get the nod as a wing or recall Twidale, the u17 sg.

Assume Clark n Brazel are locks for next year but not sold on Hanson rotunno or nelson.
Will be good to see how the latter 2 go. Word of mouth over actual results/stats seems to be apart of the selection criteria.

Pretty Good start to the tournament.
Defense not great.

Game 1
Aus (116) vs India (49)

Game 2
Aus (111) vs Nz (44)
Backup centre Gordon appears to have had a serious injury

Game 3
Aus vs Korea
A win here qualifies us to the u19 WC in 2023.
A loss here likely puts us up against China in an elimination game for a WC spot.

Game 3
Aus (96) vs Korea (66)

Both teams tired as fk, Herbert only using 2/3 of the squad.
No time for Hanson or Gordon(inj), not many minutes for nelson and Rotunno.
Probably should have given more time to burrows and Shiels, 12-14 mins.
Puoch and Loughridge playing 32mins each, Borlase 28 min, too much with a 30 point win.

Australia qualify for 2023 WC as a top 4 side, straight to the semi final.

IMO on performance so far

- should make the WC
Loughridge
Borlase
Burrows
Shiels
Puoch
Juffermans

- 50/50 WC
Heal
Petrie
Gordon

- Doubtful will make WC
Rotunno
Hanson
Nelson

Heals been ok, wouldnt lock her in though just yet.
Inj g/f Clark, g/f Brazel and cg Twidale to come back I'd say...
cg Hall is also someone I’d add for speed and defense, along with an elite rebounder.
C Juffermans has accumulated most of the rebounds, avg 10+ a game with contributions from sg Borlase and sf Puoch.

That’s 5 roster changes I’d make, just my opinion.

Aus beat Taipei 70-61.
Aus through to final vs China who won a thriller vs Japan 54-51

5-Korea
6-NZ
7-Indonesia
8-India - relegated to division DB

Malaysia promoted to DA from DB

Not sold on heal or Rotunno as the next best options either. Twidale and Harvey are other options.
I'd have triple bottom ager hall over them all though.
