Eastern Mavericks

I have been reading the Central Districts insolvency topic which slipped into Pro/Rel discussions but there was also a throw away comment about Eastern Mavericks being a concern.

On Sporting Pulse it mentions that there are nine member clubs and in addition other clubs compete such as Northern Rattlers, Eastern Mavericks etc.

Why do Eastern Mavericks get a Div 1 spot and not other clubs? Why are they different or special?

If you look at the teams which are enterred by Eastern they are certainly down on numbers, except for U10's take up their Div 1 spot and in many instances do not field a Div 2 team but a Div 3 or lower.

If they were treated as say Torrens Valley this would free up a Div 1 spot which could be allocated to the strongest team outside Div 1.

Anyhow, so much for the ramblings; can anyone explain how Eastern Mavericks "fit" in the BASA empire.

The fit as a div 1 spot in junior due to their needing development of their players for ABA.

So, for the pro/rel advocates out there I pose the following. Obviously at some time in the past, probably well before the pro/rel debate heated up the majority of the nine member clubs agreed that the best way for a club to develop juniors to ABA standard was to ensure they could play at the highest Div (1). It seems they thought at that time that being able to participate at Div 1, irrespective of scores, was the best way to develop juniors. Surely this then also applies to any club trying to develop ABA players out of juniors or does the logic of giving Easterns a guaranteed Div 1 spot now no longer apply. If the latter can't something be done to utilise the tenth team spot?

SAW,

Some people think that you need to develop players through Div 1 baskteball. But looking atEasterns teams there is an easier way.

Recruit players from other clubs who are fringe ABA players or who are unhappy with their current situation and put them in your ABA team.

If we had promotion/relegation more high level players would be developed and therefore more ABA level player produced so those clubs who didn't want too would not need to worry about working on their juniors.

yeah anon, in the short 10 year history of Mavs, no-one good has come out of them.

Deb Wilcox, Steve Williams, Ben Madgen, Cayla Francis, Brad Bungey. All played their juniors for Mavs, now either in College (playing ball) or doing well in the senior program.

Any chance your from sturt?

Don't you have something you should be painting blue?
