Boomers v Spain - Sat 27/7 - 7pm AEST

Starting a thread for discussion.

Keen af for this. Going to need to rely on the 9Now app on tablet for the game. Gave it a test run with other sports and should be fine.

Honestly if the basketball gods allow us to finally beat Spain and exact some sort of revenge for 2019 & 2014, I think it was, I would be okay with us losing the rest of our games, not that I think we will.

Excited and scared for this one. I think its a game we should win but anything can happen on any given day and if we serve up a stinker from behind the arc it could be lights out for the tournament. I expect Australia to win by about 8 points.

Not that anyone could've predicted Exum's injury, but Boomers coaching staff looking like geniuses for selecting Delly and Joe now. In an unrelated development, Thybulle doomers have really been quiet.

I believe boomers got this, big loss Exum is though. Thybulle doomers will come out of the woodwork with a loss though. Hopefully the officiating is fair, had some nasty calls against Spain in the past. Good luck boomers.

I think the Thybulle concern made sense on face value but they way people have stuck to it even despite great performances is a bit ridiculous. Its like, who cares whether the team plays well, I wanna see my favourite player there because it justifies my worldview. I think any reasonable fan can look at the team as it is and say Thybulle doesn't really fit. Other players on this squad bring a more complete game in his position while also being elite defenders. And I dont think anyone can say that Daniels isnt more impactful than Thybulle would've been. It was the right decision to cut him. People need to stop living in the past. Yes he was a big piece in Tokyo but that doesn't mean he works for this team.

No.
Wish I could say yes, but there's an unspoken influence that the Spanish have over the refs, that, combined with their propensity for theatrical flopping means we'd need some refs from Greenland, South Africa and Fiji if we have any hope of neutrality

Exum's been ruled out for at least the first two games with some now speculating he might not play at all. Why on Earth did we not replace him when we had the chance? I know you can't bring anyone in once the Olympics starts like why we couldn't replace Baynes during the last Olympics.

Playing a man down especially a key rotation player for at least the first couple of games is not a good idea.

Reply #945142 | Report this post

ME (he/kangaroo)

Hindsight is always 20/20. People are like "why didnt they replace him" and you have to choose between the possibility of suiting him up later in the tournament or replacing him with a player that just doesn't bring the same intangibles. The guys who weren't chosen weren't chosen for a reason. They still obviously are betting on Exum coming back at some point.

When you're in a group of death and you know a major piece is missing at least 2 games and therefore your tournament could very easily be over by the time he can play again, it has to be tempting to get someone else in there ASAP.

On the other hand, when the player in question is such a difference-maker to your team, and whoever you bring in to replace them is not, I can see the argument for gambling on hanging in there without them.

IF they brought in a replacement it would be very unlikely that they would play in the first few games anyway I would think unless there are futher injuries. Neither CG or Matisse can provide similar playmaking. Time for Delly and Ingles to show why they were selected.

Really hope Dante can get back for at least the Greece game. With a compound dislocation it's mostly a wait for the wound to heal.

"there may not be a later in the tournament". Well.. no. But there is no guarantee of anything in life. In the end you either bring in a lesser player and ditch Exum and have a similar chance of advancing, or you wait on Exum and have a better chance if you do happen to make it further.

Despite what people think and say, Thybulle was always going to be fourth string to the other guys in his position and Chris Goulding's defense would render him borderline unplayable.

Goorjian was screaming "slow it down, slow it down" and giddey jacks up a random 3. It takes Patty to rescue us from the jaws of death. This is why we need Exum out there ASAP. He's less prone to idiotic rushes of blood.

All in all, pretty good game. We looked like we were going to blow them off the floor but Spain made it a game, as you'd expect. Moving forward I think we're a good shot at taking Greece and making the second round but I have concerns about how we'll deal with teams with size ie, Germany, Serbia (at full strength), so on and so fort in a proper game.

Wow. Some really ordinary comments here about specific players. Someone throws a turnover and you throw them off a bridge. Magnay got some very important stops and blocks yet reading this, you would think he was horrible. Likewise McVeigh fouled a few three pointers but on the reverse, he was very comfortable at the offensive end. Not a brilliant performance from the Boomers but certainly should shut a few of the nufties up that really wouldn't know a basketball if they ate one.

Possibly Weedy, but after this tournament there'll be a new coach who might give him much more minutes.

His lack (abscence) of court time is becoming baffling.
Yeah, he might not move super well off the ball and not crash the glass hard, but he can defend and score, and if specifically told to - could rebound.
Hopefully he gets good minutes next game.

Great win, Daniels is improving every game, offers so much on defence and is showing much more of on fence now, can hit the three ball consistently! Giddey was excellent, just needs to tighten up the tour overs but great to see him hit the long threes and we look much better when he's in attack mode looking to get downhill. Landale is now our most important player, aggressive and dominant performance.
Thought Magnay did a great job apart from picking up a few too many cheap fouls. We need his physicality inside and rebounding when Landale is sitting - Duop just doesn't provide this.

Reath doesn't play because he’s a traffic cone on defence, especially when it comes to guarding the pick and roll. Even with his performances in the NBA, he’s rated amongst the very worst defenders in the league. It’s really that simple.

How can you be someone who has watched basketball for more than 6 months, and not know that sometimes players fall out of the rotation for reasons that are not damning to the player or coach? I like Reath, it is clear that he is able to play at this level and these games, but he is not getting minutes because not everyone is going to get minutes. (That's before you get to the other dozen players who didn't even make the team that could be effective players for this team at this level). He'll get his shot, and because he's a professional (particularly within this culture) he knows this, and will be ready.

There are some questionable comments here that make me wonder what people think the goal of a coach is. if it's to win basketball games, Goorjian as of right now is doing a good job. If it's to play your favourite player or play to the whims of an arm chair critic who wants to see their own vision for the team realized, he's failing miserably.

I will generally defer to the wisdom of experts unless I see a clear reason not to. Brian Goorjian, for his flaws, has forgotten more about basketball than I will ever know. Duop Reath not playing is not a "clear reason" not to defer to Goorjians superior basketball mind while our team is actually winning and beating very good competition. Sorry. If that weren't the case I'd happily entertain more Thybulle and Reath rants.

I just watched the Canada vs. Greece game. Greece is not very good at all. They've got Giannis, sure. But the rest of the team would be weaker than Spain. Giannis will always give a team some chance of winning but I'm calling Australia a favourite for that game on the eye test right now. I also don't think Canada are untouchable at all. They're certainly a league above Greece and a great fight for us but I am not scared of them and chalking it up as an automatic L either.

Bogut is also a very clever, smart basketball brain, he clearly explains why Reath isn't getting a run at present on gold standard. As you say ME, we are allowed our opinions but I’ll go with people who know a lot more than me. Goorj has been a winner everywhere, doesn’t mean we are going to win a medal but us punters just got sit back and enjoy the ride. I’ll add Daniel’s has been excellent at both ends, lots of punters were not taking him.

Yeah I'll be the first to admit I didn't have Daniels in my team; absolutely has proved us wrong, one of our most important players now given the defensive jobs he's going to have moving forward.

Need a big game out of Landale against Canada; their bigs in Powell/Olynyk/Lyles are all very average defensively and not great rebounders. All about guard play for Canada.

Will Giddey or Mills get the "Dorture Chamber" treatment from Lu Dort?

I think the coaching staff had a long hard look in the mirror after the Cup. Before the Olympics Goorjian said he was going to have to make tough decisions and no one was a lock. Even Joe Ingles was a bees dick away from being cut. That's what had to be done if we wanted to do anything in this tournament, and on current evidence, we should progress from this group and look world's better than we were last year. Mattisse Thybulle was ineffective at the cup. We couldn't afford another non-shooter and his defense has been more than replaced with Dyson Daniels. Deal with it and move on now. Duop Reath may not be playing but who cares? We are winning. We have a team with identity and structure that is playing hard and doing everything they can and should be doing. And compare that to what was served up at the world cup, the differences are chalk and cheese. We looked downright lazy at times at the cup. Almost as though we just expected to win. I am not feeling any of that from this current team. There is an urgency and grit there that undoubtedly has something to do with the guys who've been subbed in, and the return of Jock Landale and Delly. Anyone who'd want to make this team more like the world cup team for any reason has to be delusional. We are in a much better place now. if that means Thybule isn't a part of it - so be it. Work on your three point shot buddy or the NBA may do the same to you.

Patty is the heart of this team. Never doubt Patty. No Patty no boomers.

I believe Delly's selection is warranted. If you are still not sure about this go organise yourself a spot on the couch, open iView and watch the Rose Gold. Then watch the FIBA cup 2022 and tell me what was missing. Hint, it wasn't talent.

I'd rather the team lose with hustle and heart then go down like they did in the last FIBA again. It is the reason we love the Boomers (or at least I). They are the perennial underdog who never goes down without a fight with the mateship and culture to support each other.

In regards to the other lineup complaints. Duop is a professional and he would understand his role. Right now they can't trade defense for offense. The tanking Portland Trailblazers in the (defence-less) NBA can. There will be a time he is called upon. That is basketball. If you don't understand this then you are either not a professional basketballer or your name is Bolden.

I'll admit I'm still getting my head around the Thybulle situation. But I trust the selection team didn't take it lightly. Who knows- maybe it was his choice, maybe there is a risk of a nagging injury he didn't want out, maybe he tried to Draymond Green Ingles in a practice match. What we do know is that we lacked offence, shooting and chemistry in the last campaign. The current roster seems to be more balanced in those areas.

Sit back and enjoy the show. Canada will be the real test.

Darren Lucas posted the following:

"So educated basketball community what do you think of this hypothetical scenario ?
Matisse Thybulle is originally chosen in the Paris Olympics Team on the Thursday , and a celebrated quality individual and veteran was not chosen ...… After numerous phone calls and threats by a senior team member that if the veteran originally not chosen in the team of 12 is not reinstated this team leader will not play in Paris ??????
Don't get me wrong I’m loving how the team is playing and fingers crossed we get a medal again and more importantly I love Goorjian and we could not have chosen a better Olympic coach .
But you take out this veteran who was not originally chosen and put Matisee defensive skills and athleticism into the mix and were a better DEEPER team.
If this scenario is true Shame on you the leader of the boomers for putting friendship above team and country goals.
After being cut like Matisse in two Olympic Squads I feel for Matisse .
GO BOOMERS"

Yeah, wonder whether Lucas has been watching the games. Love Thybulle, one of those rare players worth focusing on when they play D. I initially had him in my team, but now I question it. Let's actually just look at this team as assembled.

Where would Thybulle fit in?

He's not any sort of upgrade over Daniels. Sorry, no minutes there.

He's also not taking Green's spot. Not splitting minutes with him either.

So maybe Thybulle at the 4? Intriguing, because he played some 4 in Tokyo, but is he really taking Kay's spot? Thybulle is an incredible off-the-ball defender, anticipating the passing lanes, but is that what we need at the 4? Or should we have a reliable big, while unathletic, can match up with solid post D, and at the other end acts as a glue guy, finding cutters, hitting the 3, and making others better?

How about taking McVeigh's spot? This team needs a McVeigh, providing exactly what Thybulle doesn't provide: microwave for the bench unit. Plus, McVeigh removed the need for a 3-point specialist like Goulding.

Delly? A guard going down -- which is exactly what has happened -- is exactly why he is there ahead of Thybulle.

Reath? No minutes anyway. Wrong position. Reath is required as bigs insurance at this stage.

Then we are left with Ingles. I presume Lucas is referring to him. 2 minutes a game. That's it. When Ingles provides versatility, acts as a potential steadying option, can be that locker room presence, hits the 3 on a team that lacks knockdown shooters. Does there need to be a conspiracy theory to select Ingles over Thybulle for that last spot? Or is it simply the sensible choice?

Matissa is an amazing defender. I hope he doesn't abandon the idea of representing Australia over this. Bad luck to him, but when you are a niche kind of player, there are times when your niche skillset simply isn't needed.

After the Olympics, when Delly and Jingles retire and Goorjian hands over the reins, I'd expect that Matisse and probably Johnny Furphy will be the first ones brought into the squad.

As you say, hopefully Matisse doesn’t spit the dummy Bolden-style and refuse to play.
