Marquee positions

I think the marquee position has kept some very good home talent in the nbl. With all the Cotton discussions re next season's salary, it’s going to be very hard to keep him and have competitive team as he will take so much of the cap. Now surely imports that have played in the NBL for the same team let’s say four seasons in a row should be allowed to marquee status, let’s face it he is as Australian as the next bloke. Now this could also entice others imports to stay and stay loyal to the same side. Now I’m a nbl fan, I don’t support the cats but just want to see quality imports stay, starting with Cotton.

I agree let's encourage imports that are around for a few years to get that.

Also NBL should be paying Cotton for an ambassadorship to keep him here, he’s too valuable marketing wise and too box office to not do it

I don't disagree and Cotton being so small yet dominant amazes 'casual' viewers rather than some Montrezl Harrell bullying people because he's too strong, intimidates them etc

But this is Cotton's 9th season in the NBL he's had years to get his citizenship in order to allow him to be a local player and thus Perth could marquee his contract.

I can't remember the exact details but he got some bad advice during Covid he didn't want to spend time away from his family by leaving the country and flying back in, 2 weeks quarantine there and another 2 weeks back in and instead opted for a high risk strategy of flying to Melbourne to be arrested and then released which unfortunately reset the timer back to zero. He should be close now to having done his four years?

Anyway unfortunately for him he buggered up his citizenship and has to deal with the consequences. If that means he has to keep playing here as an import until his citizenship goes through so be it.

You could hardly blame him for not wanting to be with his family, he should said he was au pair and would have it sorted out instantly. My point is that it would give other quality imports the chance to plan instead of chasing the next bigger contract. Players like Prather, Doyle would have good reason to stay long term, rewards loyalty by club and players.

I like the idea of a qualification period for imports to be marquees. We want quality imports to stay long term.

They can apply for citizenship after four seasons so what's the issue? The marquee rule is set up to try and keep elite Aussies in the NBL, most imports will nearly always chase the money regardless. I don't see a legit reason to allow imports to be marquees when they can be if they naturalise after four seasons.

That would see the big money clubs like Sydney and Melbourne buy up the elite imports to 'fit' them inside the cap whilst still stockpiling elite Aussies. This arms race BS has to stop at some point. Those big money clubs already have an inherent advantage as it is that small clubs like Cairns can't possibly compete with.

The Wildcats are absolutely loaded if they can't come up with enough room in the salary cap to keep Cotton, because he buggered up/doesn't want to naturalise, tough. Keep in mind this is all because Cotton's a FA at the end of the season and he's just trying to get one last big contract out of the Wildcats. He threatens to leave every time, gets them over a barrel and then re-signs, no doubt same thing will happen this time.

It didn't reset the clock, it made him ineligible to ever get citizenship.

Lots of migrants from the fifties and sixties have lived in Australia all their life and still aren't naturalised, some people just prefer to stay where they’re born. Scottish, Irish, English and European are prime examples.

Cotton is going to earn 1.2 million plus next season, I’d prefer to see that in the nbl. Your team can have as much money as they like, on cap of just under 2 million if one contract 1.2 million towards the cap it’s going to scrubs left. 800k for another ten players. The minimum wage next season is 80k, so all other players will be on that. Lmao.

You wouldn’t be allowed an extra marquee just a loyal import that served his team and the nbl well.

"The marquee rule is set up to try and keep elite Aussies in the NBL."

Correct, and this change would mean it could also be used to keep long-serving imports in the NBL.

Okay I hadn't heard that before but if that's the case why was Gleeson picking Cotton to be in the Boomers 2024 Olympic team?

Essentially all Cotton needed to do was fly to Bali and back. His stubbornness has cost him.

"to keep long-serving imports in the NBL."

Less than the current four seasons is hardly long-serving.

Exactly Cotton stuffed up big time he tried to be cute didn't want to spend 4 weeks in quarantine so rolled the dice on a gamble and lost. Now we're being asked to change the rules because of one player's poor judgement, I don't think so.

Cotton will likely re-sign with Perth anyway and it might cost them being able to keep Tai Webster or something, big deal.

Ridiculous bureaucracy and draconian laws pretty much forms Australian immigration.

Cotton shouldn't have had to leave, it’s pure absurdity

Cotton has been here a lot longer than four seasons.

Paying Cotton his market price does not mean the rest of the Cats roster necessarily has to suffer. The new owner could just chip in the extra cash and pay the luxury tax. So the Cats might say have a cash spend of $4.5 Million instead of the $3.8 Million or whatever they currently spend. Just depends how deep his pockets are or whether there is another benefactor or sponsor/source of revenue that could be found.

Correct, 9 seasons as I said. Imports can naturalise after four seasons.

Suggested change is about keeping long-serving imports in the league, ie those who aren't naturalised.

The new Perth owner just bought 90% of the team for $36 million. If he's got that kind of money to blow on an NBL team I don't think he's looking behind the couch for loose change. This whole thing is a nothing argument it's just Cotton trying to get the best deal he can out of the Wildcats.

If imports don't want to naturalise after four seasons that's their business.

Yes exactly, that's their business and nothing to do with this proposed change which is designed to help keep quality performers who have connection to the fanbase in the comp.

Bc would need to apply for perm residence first , not sure you can go straight to Australian without that step

Has he done that part

It was a suggestion, imo it could work very well. It'll be massive tax to pay if Cotton gets 1.2 million, it’s what he deserves. Look at the maths and yes million, billion aires do have money but they certainly don’t like paying taxes, that’s why they got it. Can you imagine the cats funding part of Cooks wage, lmao.

Ultimately growing the media rights revenue for the league will best serve keeping good imports here. But whoever is the genius that does the scheduling so the free to air tv broadcast game is between a team that has played 4 games in 7 days versus a team that has not played for 8 days needs a performance review. What would channel 10 have thought about both teams playing the end of their beach for most of the 2nd half? Blind Freddy could see what happened today was a real chance. Like the JJs in game 1 of the Championsip series last season. If one team is exhausted and other fresh then chances are you are going to get these outomes. And don't get me started about how the game is being reffed with all these constant air brush fouls.

I wouldn't offer Cotton 1.2M and I don't think he'll get it either. What's he supposedly on $900k? I'd offer him $1M per on a 3 year deal if he doesn't like it shake the man's hand and move on. He ain't getting that money anywhere else.

Media reported that Cooks is on 1.2 million a year for three years, now Cooks is a very good player, I'm not certain how many coaches would pick him ahead of Cotton. Gleeson should certainly use him now, he’s relying on Smith who was at Brisbane last season and it’s not happening that well.

I kmow what Cooks got and if the Kings were stupid enough to give that to him that's on them. It doesn't mean the Cats have to be silly too.

I just think it gives teams and imports to plan a bit longer than season to season. Imo it would help all teams but taipans could bring in an import that's been good and say after two seasons extended his contract for three, the season he’s a marquee and can get more coin that is not taking cap space. Groves looks good get him back next season if he’s doing good you can plan around him.
