NBL TV ratings over holiday period

So I just stumbled across an interesting tidbit in an article about sports ratings during the Christmas period, and it states the following:

"NBL & A-League does the numbers for Ten
The NBL season, aptly timed to coincide with the off-season of most other long-season sports, reached a total of 1.46 million national viewers. A-Leagues matches, and highlights across 10 and 10 Play also reached 1.14 million total national viewers."

So it seems that the NBL outshone the A League during the two week 'holiday period' of Christmas and New Year's. Those numbers are still small fry when compared to some of the cricket matches that averaged over a million per game. The NBL's Christmas day ratings were at a reach of 100,000 with a regular audience of 19,000 which is hard to see in context as to whether that would be considered a win for the league or not. But the fact the league hasnt been crowing about it probably suggests it was no breakthrough and they may need to go back to the drawing board to figure out how they can get back to the 300,000 viewer rating they had a few seasons ago.

Been watching a lot more NBL this season as most games are unpredictable. However, since the switch of the A League to Paramount, I have not watched Adelaide United games, being content with the highlight packages.

Would be interesting to see the figures if the A League was still on Foxtel as well.

Wonder what (if any) effect 'draw card' players like Trez and Tacko have on this

Those numbers are just the FTA ratings though, yeah? Doesn't include subscription or streaming (Foxtel/Kayo) viewers?

Only channel ten I am pretty sure. The ratings page I sourced the 100K figure from only showed from FTA.

And if you want a rough guide to how few watch Kayo:

"There were increases in viewing online video on most services compared to 2023 - including Netflix (67% from 61%) Facebook (45% from 38%), Amazon Prime Video (34% from 25%), Disney+ (34% from 28%), Instagram Reels (30% from 24%), Stan (25% from 22%), TikTok (22% from 18%), Binge (16% from 13%), Kayo (15% from 12%), Paramount+ (14% from 12%), Apple TV+ (13% from 10%), Foxtel Now/Foxtel Go (12% from 9%) and Optus Sport (4% from 3%)."

Paramount plus is higher than I expected, I'll be honest.

Kayo has 1.4 million subscribers. It has been good for the NBL as their main demographics match Kayo's and they get exact viewership numbers, and those numbers have suggested the traditional guestimate ratings system had been underselling how many eyeballs the NBL reaches. Kayo has made the NBL's case for broadcast and sponsorship $$ stronger.

If the partnership with ESPN/Kayo was going as swimmingly as you suggest why did the NBL not sign a new broadcast deal last year when the deal with them expired and just agreed to a one year extension?

We know 7 are sniffing around and a 7/7 Plus type arrangement would be much better for the potential growth of the league than being locked away on dying Foxtel, now sold and likely to be dismantled, and a streamer in Kayo that no one watches.

Sorry I'm stuck on paramount+. Given that there's very little else on that platform aside from football, you have to think that their subscriber base is a huge portion people wanting to watch football. Given they have as much of a share as they do (basically equal to kayo) that is pretty big for football.

Kayo obviously has far more sports (though way less than it used to) to help with overall subscribers but also makes it a better value proposition - though ultimately, not a good one

The current broadcast is all packaged up and produced by ESPN even the Sunday games broadcast by 10. Hopefully that would not change if 7 got the FTA rights in that there would also be pay tv rights like with the AFL and fox footy. We might complain about the commentary team we currently have but imagine if a FTA station packaged and produced it. There might be a lot more ex AFL types doing the commentary.

Also, the league has of course the breakdown of viewers for each team and that might surprise. I have heard the JJs CEO say I think that number 1 is the Kings and number 2 is the JJs and not much separates them.

Because they take ownership of the WNBL at the end of the season and want to shop them as a package deal.

''Because they take ownership of the WNBL at the end of the season and want to shop them as a package deal."

Not a fan of that. The NBL has had to do a lot to clear its name in the public conscience and to be labelled anything but a "basket case" in the media. It now presents as a potentially attractive option, but to take it out on a date you have to also bring the fat pimply friend that is the WNBL.

I have nothing against the WNBL - it's a perfectly world class women's league. But it just will not garner the public interest that the NBL could and packaging them to me is a serious mistake. The only deal I could see working with a major station here is one where WNBL games are available online whereas the NBL is shown once a week or so on a main channel and maybe gets a few games on a secondary channel - so basically what it already has. The WNBL does not 'sweeten' the deal at all.

Im just not sure 7 will ever care enough about basketball to give it the kind of platform that Ten currently does. I dont think we want to be second fiddle to some major sport on a FTA channel.

Does 10 really give the NBL a great platform? It's by far the lowest rating of the three commercial FTA networks and yes they show one game on their main channel but the other game is on 10 Bold.

7 gets far better ratings than 10 they don't have the rights to BBL on Saturday's often showing bugger all right there could be a Sat afternoon & Sat night double. Plus it's digital channels like 7Two and 7Mate get the best ratings for digital channels and 7plus gets the best streaming ratings of the three commercial FTA networks too.

I think 10 have done a decent a job, albeit not paying anything for the FTA rights, but a deal with 7 and streaming rights to 7plus could be transformative for the NBL.

The NBL carries the WNBL to a better deal than it would otherwise get.

"The NBL carries the WNBL to a better deal than it would otherwise get."

And in doing so potentially limits its own prospects, prospects that are limited as is. We're not the AFL so we dont really have the luxury of tagging on a less attractive prospect to the deal and throwing our weight around.

I think what us oldies sometimes forget is that the young ones don't read newspapers, don’t watch FTA etc. and everything for them is digital in terms of reach and viewership. My millennial daughter and her partner without any influence from me watch not only JJs games but several other games as well each week. And in their peer group the NBL has reach and profile. I know the Tas market is probably a bit different to elsewhere but I don’t disbelieve the leagues narrative on the continued growth of digital viewership. Of course, all the focus in TAS this week is on that other Professional Sporting team, the Hurricanes. As an aside, I have no doubt that if the JJs had a stadium big enough they would get 13,000 plus to finals as well (and possibly even regular season games). The stadium upgrade really needs to get done. The extra season memberships and ticket sales would all be cream for the JJs.
