Isn't he an owner? I think that the games gone past Goorjian, but he might need a stab proof vest. Have the other assistants survived?

Brian should be very worried, can't have his mate Tomlinson handing him the clipboard. And Bogut will be able to tell Brian what to do, maybe even tell him who's on court during timeouts.
And can see Bogut being a big drawcard for big kids coming through. Rocco could have learnt a lot and there's bound to be plenty of next stars wanting to learn from him.
If they struggle can see Brian "stepping down" for various reasons and Bogut taking over. He's already better than a few head coaches already.

How it pans out will be interesting but excellent move for Bogut. I thought he moved all his family back to Melbourne, he'll have a busy schedule.

It might just be put on for the camera but Bogut doesn't come across as having the greatest people skills in the world

Has the potential to end ugly having an owner deciding to coach.

Pretty hard to sack the coach if needed if they are an owner.

There is atleast one example from another team showing what happens when ownership tries to involve themselves in coaching!

Yes Bogut is a part owner but if coach sackings going to happen surely it's from the main money people. He’ll be fine though, his basketball IQ is off the charts.

Kickert is moving on and obviously Bogurt is taking his place but yes as a Part Owner he could look to rule over Goorijan.

Will be an interesting season ahead.

Weird. I'm (more than) happy with Bogut as an assistant with his experience etc., but I also don't know how it works in practice when you also have a stake in the club.

Has Billy been sacked?

What happened to Boges as a commentator?

Bogut must really have the itch.

Could be a decent assistant, development, coach, but hard to see him being a successful head coach.

You are kidding me, Bogut would make a great head coach. He'll keep everyone in check, plus he’s one of the best brains in the country re basketball. I could see him leading the boomers down the track.

Great basketball mind, I expect him to be a great coach. Im not worried too much about whether his opinions offend the wokerati.

Bogut is old school, not sure how well he'd connect with the new kids

Having a great ability to explain basketball on a podcast is one thing, but marshalling and connecting with a squad of 15 players and a few assistants is another

Anstey, Heal, Gaze, none made very successful coaches. Bogut would be in the minority of the Boomers legends who have tried their hand.

Smyth did, to be fair

You don't think Roth, Vickerman are old school.

Baller, you don't think he'd be a better coach than Jackomas with all the experience and also pretty well known for having an excellent basketball IQ? Or even knowing the NBL more than American coaches coming over like Abdelfattah.
He might ruffle a few feathers, who knows, but did Steve Kerr have much experience coaching?
But definitely has the pedigree to make a good coach, trust him more than Brian which how the ownership group appears to feel anyway with his performance the past few years.

I think Roth and Vickerman probably have higher emotional intelligence and better leadership capabilities than Bogut has, or will have.

Bogut is fathers of two boys I believe, emotional intelligence, lol. Tall poppy syndrome, he might not make but odds are stacked in his favour.

What's being a father got to do with it? Most coaches are

Not sure if odds are in his favour. Many great players haven't been great NBL coaches. Gaze, Heal, Anstey, Mark Price, CJ Bruton, DMac, Rillie etc etc all NBL or NBA legends, didn't or haven't achieved much

And many great coaches weren't great players (Auerbach, Poppovich NBA, Gleeson, Vickerman, Buford NBL etc etc)

Normally when you become a parent you learn emotion intelligence very quickly. I'd also say Bogut has achieved more than all those coaches except perhaps Gaze and if it wasn’t for horrendous injuries would have even achieved greater success.

You'd never see a club like Perth end up in a situation where an owner also holds a position that's supposed to be subservient to the head coach.

Bogut definitely has the iq and is honest and hardworking. The fact he is prepared to accept an assistant gig first shows humility obviously him having shares in the team isn't ideal.

Regarding ex players there’s a difference between coaching teams, being an individual skills/trainer and coaching seniors/juniors.

He said in an interview he doesn't get the buzz watching from the sidelines like he thought he would. He needs some power to have effect on the games & the outcome. I'd say he will have a role with significant power. Is he replacing Kickett? Or billy?

This sounds too much like the Sixers - we have every confidence in the head coach and are bringing in a 'quality' assistant to help.

I wonder how long Goorjian has been given to get the results expected.

Bringing in a club/league/basketball legend straight to head coaching without any coaching experience?

That would be very Anstey-esque and Gaze-esque

If that's their plan, maybe Kings could use a history lesson....

Not saying it could never work, but, to borrow a phrase from an earlier poster "the odds aren't in their favour"

Its funny to me that people talk about Bogut's people skills as if they actually know him, all because he says opinions online you disagree with. lol.

You dont have to always like your coach but you should respect them, and I think he commands respect.

Rob T, good point. Is this to make Brian walk so no payout?

Similar to what Anstey did to Trev @ Tigers?

At this point he is an assistant coach, replacing Kickert, going to gain the experience so he doesnt become a head coach without prior experience like Anstey and Gaze did.

I havent seen any evidence that he is trying to shaft Goorj, Bogut and Goorj have always spoke fondly of each other, appeared to have a good relationship, hence why Goorj is at the Kings.

I doubt Bogut is going to shaft Goorj this season, is he hoping to take over after a year or 2 when Goorj contract is up/retires, quite possibly, but hes atleast serving some sort of apprenticeship.

Time will tell how good he is, but I dont think anyone can really say either way, one indicator he might be good is that he basically coached the team the year he played under Gaze and the team did fairly well and he has been fairly involved in assembling the rosters and coach hires ever since which has lead to 3 championships, so he clearly has something to offer.

Lol "usually when you have kids you learn emotional intelligence very quickly" hahahahaha yeah, because there are absolutely zero dud parents around at all! What an odd assumption. Emotional intelligence isn't something you just develop without putting work into it. There are many, many low EQ parents around.

However, I do agree Bogut has very valuable basketball insight and experience, and I often agree with his basketball assessments. It has been well documented that he is slightly controversial on a personal level though. Also, if he's still an owner I think this is major conflict of interest and poses many issues, so will be interesting to it all watch unfold.

Yes ME he will definitely command respect. I don't like the fact that he is an owner, but the more
I think about it and watched an interview with him, the more I think it could work. He has a forceful personality, which is not a bad thing, but he will need to be very carefull in the times he and Goorjian are not seeing eye to eye. Won’t doubt his game knowledge, just don’t know how patient he will be.

Goorj and Bogut go back since Bogut was a teenager, he almost signed with the Titans to play for Goorj before going to college, which Goorj convinced him to do.

So Im sure they know how to communicate with each other and have had some disagreements over that time.

Also, based on last season, someone telling Goorj what to do at times wont always be a bad thing.

Exactly Jonno, Goorj won't want his legacy tarnished and if Bogut helps him do that he’ll sit back. Even Roth lets his assistant coaches call plays at times, Vickerman praised Carter for the winning play in the game against the cats.
