Junior basketball options in NSW

Hi all,

I am looking for information for a junior player (FIBA U13) moving from France to Sydney for 6 months. This player plays high junior level in France and would like to maintain similar standards in training and playing while in Australia. Noe that he will not attend school here.

I am involved in basketball development in Victoria and am very familiar with the different pathways and options for juniors within the VJBL and domestic associations. I am however less familiar with the basketball scene in NSW other than the Waratah league, which is to my understanding the Rep pathway of NSW.

My questions are

- is NSW following the same domestic / Rep set up as Victoria?
- is the basketball calendar the same as Victoria?
- does a junior without an Australian passport need clearance to play for a domestic / rep club in NSW?

Thank you for any help, the BNSW website is not the most user friendly when it comes to finding answers.

All of the clubs competing in NBL1 east also have good junior rep programs.

My suggestion is look at the list of NBL1 east clubs, work out what clubs are nearest to where the player will be staying, then contact that club directly.

Oh as well as the NBL1 east clubs, if the player will be based in western sydney then maybe a program like Savannah Pride is a good fit. A lot of their kids play for Blacktown Storm junior reps, they also send very strong teams to SSANBA tournaments around the country. They have strong connection to the South Sudanese community but are open to anyone who is willing to commit and train hard.

It depends a bit where he will be staying and when he will be here? Pretty sure that all U14 Premier rep teams would now be locked in as the season has only just commenced.

OP is seeking info on domestic competitions, not representative/district comps.

Agree with previous advice re demographic location. Contact BNSW for contact details for most appropriate local representative club(s) and enquire with the club(s) BNSW suggest whether they run a domestic comp too.

Hope the player enjoys their time balling is Oz

All NSW clubs that have a rep program also run domestic comps. It's a condition of entry when nominating to the Waratah leagues

From the waratah league regs:

11.3. The association must be able to demonstrate the ability to sustain and support entered team(s), via feeder programs, this includes the running of domestic competitions, pathways for players, coaches, referees and other
technical officials

Thank you all for all your input - this is highly appreciated.

They do not know where they will be staying yet - - the move will be from September to March.

From talking with BNSW, it ses to align with the NSW Rep season so there might be scope for this player to try out, or at least find a training spot with a high level Rep club.

Do you guys know if Domestic runs all year round in NSW as this could be a good complement?

I am not sure Sept-March would really align with rep program though - here's the dates for 2025. https://www.bnsw.com.au/waratah-junior-leagues/

Sydney clubs are in Metro Junior League (MJL) or Junior Premier League (JPL) - so mid March to late July/early August. Plenty of clubs will be fine to have him part of the training squad though even if he isnt going to be around for the full season.

There are domestic comps all year round.

Also 3x3 tournaments during school holidays

Also - I dont know if he would directly qualify for the BNSW SPP/DAP program, but whatever is his nearest 'big' club will probably have a few kids around his age who do get selected for that, and as a result, the club will have a weekly session with a high performance coach for the SPP/DAP athletes, and usually a few other kids will be invited as well - both for their development, and so the SPP/DAP athletes can do contested drills.

One last wildcard - maybe he should have a think about developing some reffing skills as well - would certainly endear him to whatever club he ends up closest to, plus make a few dollars as well.
