Are NBL Clubs Profitable?

I know we debate this from time to time on here but this is from an ESPN article of today:

"The league has boomed since Kestelman took ownership in 2015, selling out 55 games this season and welcoming more than 1.1 million punters through the gates - an all-time record.

But despite this, only four of the NBL's teams - Perth, Melbourne United, Tasmania and Cairns - currently run at a profit.

The Hawks are the worst financial performers of the remaining six.

They are expected to post a seven-figure loss for the recent season despite an excellent campaign culminating in the club's second championship.

No team has folded since Kestelman bought the NBL, with the league hopeful of ensuring the future of the Hawks, the last remaining foundation club."

Just goes to show how well Cairns must be administered to turn a profit on their limited revenue.

I think the real question is: Are NBL clubs sustainable? I don't think running a profit is the be all and end all for most professional sporting organisations.

Perth have the highest salary and luxury tax bill.

How on Earth are they profitable?

I seemed to recall that luxury tax collected from clubs exceeding the cap were to be collected and allocated to those spending below the cap.

Is this the reason Cairns is profitable? Because I cannot imagine their fans want to watch the trash they dished up last season.

Cairns have die hard fans who will pack out the convention centre regardless of performance. An unkind way of looking at it is that there is F all to do during wet season and the Taipans is something that's reasonably priced tmand that you can take the whole family to. Either way you'll get 4k minimum for every game and you can budget backwards from there.

LoveBroker Perth have second and third generation wealth supporters. Individuals take responsibility to cover different players costs. Generous sponsors

Isl wonder if there is somewhere where it can be worked out how much revenue each team makes from a home game? Bigger venue equals more tickets, but various ticket prices would vary depending on layout, plus how much are corporate boxes valued at, ie sponsorship divided by games per box or seats.
And Perth, as well as I read here that Tassie have great financial backing from sponsors. Be interested to see once the AFL hits town if they'll lose some cash from those backers.
Cairns need to stick to their budget down to the last bottle of Gatorade I'd imagine. As well as off court staff. And even though they had a tough year, could compare them to Adelaide who sell out consistently no matter how crap they are on the floor as well. At least this season they had some marketable players to watch as part of the Sixers circus.
