Gems' chances at WC?

Chances of Gems medalling at WC?

Any surprises in the squad? Saw that Lehman missed out this time.

Hope Somfai recovers in time from injury that caused withdrawal. Otherwise no SA reps :-(

Very tough with no Shiels, no Somfai, no Hall.

Hinder finally getting a call up.

Somfai seemeed fine a few days ago. Did she even attend the previous camp? Her green/gold days might be over.

Nevermind, either Casey have edited their post or I misread. Initialy it gave me the impression that those three had made the final 12 (or that Casey were jumping the gun).

Any intel why no Portlock or Lehmann? If they're not injured that would be interesting: automatic national team selection when at the CoE, but cut now that they've left.

Better than 9th from last time? Not convinced. Injury and not interested players a big hit on the team this time out.

Are the groups confirmed?

Very disappointing, gonna be tough. A good draw and we are a medal chance.
We seem to have a gems curse though... every couple of years the team gets a bunch of injuries prior to the tournament or we have some no shows.

3 key players mia
Shiels
Somfai
Hall

Shooting a real issue with no Finney either.
Nightingale also would have helped on the boards against some strong, tall teams.
Others to miss out…
Crook, Petrie, Waite and from the previous camp Bird, Bond, Aherne, Hanson, Lehmann, Portlock,

Nightingale is uncomplicated player. Rebounds, hits hard screens, roll or pop. Only issue is decision making if playing through post (can turn it over) - although with a guard heavy squad is that going to happen. I think would have been good addition to this squad.

Hall not in squad unfathomable. D

Weedy is Sophie Taylor fit? not in train on squad but was at COE as shooter?

Taylor Hasn't performed post injury.

Shiels injured and can’t play.
Somfai probably could play.
Hall is healthy but has skipped again -own choice or someone else’s, I’m not sure.

Australia is in a pool with France, Brazil and Mali from what I can gather.

Taylor and Crook are injured (as is just about everyone for the CoE women), so probably weren't available for selection.

I think Hinder's inclusion cost Nightingale, she plays the same role but is much bigger, not sure she can shoot but I think she was the right choice. It's interesting that they overlooked a few of the COE kids, should have overlooked 3 more though!

Is it just me or is there a significant number of COE girls injured going back 12 months or so. Is it the program or nbl1 attrition?Apologies if too much of a tangent.

For the female athletes, yes. It's been quite common for several to be out with long-term injuries at any given time. Currently they have 5 fit and healthy players, which is extreme even for the CoE.

There are 7 who are either at the COE or have graduated. Four of them have been consistent performers at every level they have played, 3 haven't. I don't think its to had to work out which ones are lucky to be there.

If it wasn't hard I wouldn’t have asked the question. I think fagan, Dakic and Russell are only ones at coe now who are in the team. They all solid and should be there I believe. I don’t think it matters fagan is double btm age.

@AmongUs1, ole mate 4X has mentioned a strong dislike for one of the girls you just mentioned and when asked for clarity on their comments for the recent National Champs, they went quiet. Particularly after said COE and Vic Metro player absolutely smashed it.

Fagan 08 and Ryan 09 earnt a spot, both future opals imo.

Plenty of other 06 and 07s deserved a camp invite but none of those realistically were making the final 12. Still should be tested...

What annoys me is every other country brings in 30-100 to the first camp and we only bring in 16-22. The other issue we have now is players not wanting to play fiba comp because they have been told it will hurt potential earnings in college or draft stock in the future.

how can it hurt potential earnings? CC won 2 x gold medals for USA.

It's simple, big college teams on your list watch you at the fiba event, you perform badly, the college no longer wants you.

So the opposite must be true. Play and play well and your stock goes up.

You no fit certain that message is given to some? Don't play?! Any player with that mentality is doomed to fail. Frightened of failure.

It also brings up the question of pure hype for some. Profiles beyond what they can actually do.

It’s worse if the coach finds out there not that good at first practice and then there benched all year.

That's a bit of a stretch IamBear, all I said was that I didn't think she would be the difference compared to what happened in u16. She was good, she's a good player, not the best in the Metro team though and certainly not at the level of players like Hall or Shiels, who really have been difference makers at AJC's. She's also not one of the 3 i don't think should be there, her height and athletic ability will be useful in some matches. There are 3 players in there who were really poot a the u20's. The selections in the boys are the same, the COE boys in the Vic team were mostly quite poor, but they are all there too. Players who were very unlucky to miss out on he girls side, in my opinion, are Bond, Waite and Hodges in particular. Of those not there Finney stands out as one who should definitely be in the team, she may be a bit one dimensional but the shooting is so good she would likely have had a strong positive impact on the team.

Fagan is more likely to be an FT Opal before Hall and Shiels because we have so few post prospects. Beyond Magbegor and Smith, it's only Aokuso and Scherf pushing for C spots.
Tolo and George are both 36 this year and probably only have 1-2 tournaments left.

Puoch and Williams over Waite I think is fair given exp.
Hinder over Waite, looks like potential won, a possible size match to the very tall women playing for other teams.

Perkins + Harvey(both playing well in nbl1 currently) edge Bond and Dakic gives you a specialist defender. Notoa with the high IQ also an option.

Hodges was not even in the mix, another one of those that should have been on the extended list.

I probably agree with you re Fagan being a Future Opal, I also didn't argue she shouldn't be in the team, my argument was about her influence on the results o the u18's specifically and I don't see anything that changed my mind. She has what we lack. I'd take Waite over Williams. Hinder was a good choice, there is footage of her playing against the CoE on Youtube from late last year, she's huge and looks like she knows how to play. Bond is a capable offensive player and was defensive player of the tournament at the u20's. Her and Perkins would complement each other well. To me a PG needs to be able to shoot to stop teams going under ball screens and they have to be both willing and able to pass the ball. Perkins meets these requirements, so does Bond. Notoa was great a the AJC's and is a play maker but not a PG. Hodges should have been in the mix, as should have Thompson, amongst others.

Thompson can't do either of the things you said a pg needs to do.

Stats suggest she can, she shot over 40% from 3 and good assist numbers. Not arguing she's a PG anyway, she's a 2 guard and a good player who outperformed several in the team and thoroughly deserved an invite to the camp.

There are some good numbers in the nbl1 from some of these players in the team, esp those who are in the east conference. The future is bright with ryan and fagan elligable for Oceania u19 in Samoa again later this year, and Ryan still u17.
