Boti honours Phil Smyth

Boti has a pretty lengthy piece in the paper today honouring Phil Smyth as he prepares to be involved in his 652nd NBL game (356 as a player).

PHIL Smyth and Lindsay Gaze have a great deal in common ... and it's not just on a basketball court or because their careers are inexorably linked.

For example it remains extraordinarily difficult to excite either laidback coach at the prospect of breaking a record or setting one. Blase to the point of indifference, both are more interested in tomorrow than yesterday.

So on Wednesday when Smyth's Adelaide 36ers host New Zealand and he passes his mentor's NBL record mark of 651 games, Gaze will be singularly unmoved.

.... and that at one stage, he was rated the 3rd best point guard in the world. He was a heckuva player.

phils a legend - I can recall dave and himself destroying teams playing thursday nights at st clair - vaugely remember phil all but dunking a few as well

even though ive bagged phil all season. new coach please. but phil as a player is different. i did hear back in the day he was consided the 3rd beat pg in the world behind magic and isiah. must be one of the greats.

He was actually rated the best point guard in the world outside of the USA by the Basketball Digest in the mid 80's. Great player, good coach, just needs to work on those recruiting skills
