Singapore team targets Pirates

FOUR Hunter Pirates players have been plucked from the sinking ship with the chance to continue their National Basketball League careers in Singapore.

Brad and Larry Davidson, Ben Melmeth and Russell Hinder have been targeted by the new owners, who are expected to take over the Pirates franchise in the next two weeks.

Players confirmed yesterday that Pirates chairman John O'Brien told the four players this week that the Singapore owners had asked to speak to them first.

It's not really the right thread, but here's my attempt at a Singapore nickname: the Stopovers.

Give them a gym at Changi airport, and opposing teams have to play them literally as part of a stopover. Fly in, clear customs, head to the court, play a game, back through customs, back on the plane and outta there. You could do it in a day - and with no accommodation costs, it's cheaper.

I must've been asleep when this all happened. Do Singapore now own the licence, with the intention of having a team based in Singapore?

They will have to have a team full of imports. I've seen the Singapore National Team train, most ABA and Reserves players in Adelaide could make the team easily and dominate.

Oh, THAT Singapore team? Heck. Tell Gary Birmingham his NBL dreams will soon be coming true. Will Tracy York get a gig on their coaching panel?
