When is escaping with a violation not an advantage

I was wondering on what peoples opinion of the advantage rule is. Personaly I think its being applied to liberally, when I was a lad it meant you couldn't thump somone behind the play to stop a lay-up from occuring at the other end of the court.
Now its if you travel in the back court and no ones near you you apparently havent gained an adavantage.
Uhh pardon me you keep the ball when it should have been turned over .. I call that an advantage.
How do you explain to kids what they do in the back court with no one around isn't allowed in the front court with a defender.
and yet its the same move?

I hope I have the wrong end of this 'rule' can someone set me straight as to what the ruling is and how its applied. and more importantly why its not an advantage to keep the ball when you shouldn't.

BTW I havent had any dispute with anyone about this rule I can just see it blowing out, and be part of the parent frustration , when they see two exact same moves ones called the other isn't due to the 'advantage rule' and would be putting the refs under even more pressure that they dont need.
It would be a simpler game without this complication.

These days if your a small guard and get fouled hard from the 3pt line nothing happens, also small guards can't block, cause when they do, they get called for a foul.

Talking umps and how bad are the ones in the football! Collingwood can just push the crows in the back without being called!

Sorry for the offtopic.

Go CROWS!

odin, this has already been discussed. I think you will find a obvious travel in the back court would be called, but a minor movement of the foot is hardley worth stopping the game for.

In football they have similar interpretation to keep the game flowing and fast.

Also in low grade juniors like under 10's and 12's this interpretation is not applied.

Ie a foul is a foul.
