Local Associations

In the absence of a local forum I've been looking at the forum on the OzHoops website and a recent thread got my attention.

The orginal post was in regards to local associations and while it was one persons chance to 'bitch' it did bring up some interesting points.

http://www.ozhoops.com.au/boards/viewtopic.php?t=3999

A certain YOGEE replied with a SA perspective and brought to the attention that Victoria, NSW, Queensland and WA all have local Associations whereas in SA we do not. (Not in Adelaide anyway, obviously local associations are widespread in Country areas).

Previously on the old Sixers forum there were many discussions on the pros and cons of domestic leagues. While the OzHoops posts shows the problems with domestic leagues, surely this it would be an improvement on the current structure. Looking at the numbers in other states playing the game compared to SA surely we should be doing more. Even looking at the numbers of junior bballers in country areas compared to their population surely we should be doing more?

Is it time for clubs to run their own venues?(good luck Norwood)

Is it time for the clubs to have even more involvement in their local areas (miniball programs, social programs, school visits, school holiday camps)? I know some clubs do visits and camps but are we doing enough?

The depth of talent in basketball in Adelaide is dropping, Classics results another example of that, surely we need to do something NOW instead of just using the same old excuses of "We don't have the population." "BASA would never let us" "We're all just volunteers" "No one has the time" etc etc.

What do you all think?

Domestic competitions run by SA clubs (associations) are a must, if we are serious about consistently competing with the best in Australia.

I haven't heard any negative feedback on this concept - just an inability to get it off the ground. If people are serious about this, then let's make it happen! Lobby your club to commit to the concept, and work with BASA to find suitable court space. Sow the seeds of the competition with players from your existing lower division teams, and work with another nearby club if necessary, to get the competition up and running.

Creating a less "elite" environment will make the competition more attractive to new players, as will reducing/removing the requirement of training, and the need to commit for a full year. Increased numbers equals more competition for elite (district) positions, meaning the standard of our district competition will improve.

Coordinating a new competition seems like a big task for clubs which have't had the experience in doing so (admin, scheduling, umpire recruitment/development/coordination, etc.), but we need to start from somewhere. There'll no doubt be teething problems, but it will be all worth it in the end.

I think rather than do it in 'clubs' like they do in Melbourne etc, it'd be best to do it in schools, and only up to the end of Primary School. I'm sure it would be alot easier for a club like Forestville or Norwood to coordinate a schoools comp over a few nights a week starting from yr3s (u10s) to yr7s(u14s). What d'yall reckon?

Isn't the BASA comprised of all the local clubs?

I don't think that "(our parent association) wouldn't let us" should be a valid excuse in any league/organisation.

Not only is it not a valid excuse, I don't believe it's true. BASA are very supportive of the idea of club's running their own domestic competitions, aimed at the non-elite level.

Gotta agree here with Mr Arnott. We are missing a lot of potential players who have no where to play. Libertine, most stadiums already delivery miniball. I agree clubs should give assistance, but what we need is a low-cost competition for non-elite ball players. By nonn-elite I'm thinking below div 2 juniors. If you can't afford to play district or you are a relative novice, playing in a non threatening, less competitive competition where fun and enjoyment is promoted rather than winning, wouldn't we increase our base of players. I'm not sure that too many people know this. But Dandenong the club have about 5000 members total. While the whole of the district senior and junior comps don't even have that much. And that is just one Association in Melbourne. Why wouldn't BASA be for it. More players means more court revenue for them, and more potential spectators for the Sixers and Lightning. Everybody get on to their committee and get something happening because we are just sliping further and further behind.

I would agree with the above that Domestic level competition is a must and I bet as soon as one or two clubs get one going, the others will see its merit and have to follow.

Further to Paul Arnott's comment "Coordinating a new competition seems like a big task for clubs which have't had the experience in doing so" I'd respond well someone is doing it at every stadium right now aren't they? Can the current staff at a local venue be employed by the local club and therefore have a background already in place of how to run such competitions? Surely if clubs were running a venue they could afford to pay the same if not more then what BASA already do.

We all know certain venues are being run better then others but that would be a place to start.

Again I would ask if it is possible for a club to run a venue in S.A. or is that impossible in our situation here? A local venue is all about grassroots basketball, I would argue that the best thing for basketball would be to have a local club running a local venue as opposed to BASA and an Area Manager.

Would BASA be supportive of such a stance? Surely more hands on involvement from clubs would be a good thing, even if its done in the short-term with BASA's assistance.

I know he is the enemy but having this guy come off the bench and spark things would be great for the Sixers, we need something coming off the bench, Sapwell used to be the spark we havent had one for a while, if he is still a free agent we should be knocking on his door.

We need a guard, Booby cant carry the whole squad again especially with a sore back

Mark Davis and Dwayne Nelson played back in the Appollo days, you gotta have them in the list too.

I wouldn't put Bradley in the "best list", nor Damon Ridley.

I do agree with putting me in that list, and I thank you. Who ever said not me could not have seen me play while I was in Australia. I loved it.
