What should happen with Junior Bball?

Due to the announcement last week it appears that we have the opportunity to review/restructure junior basketball (or rather BSA does!). What do folks believe they should be trying to achieve in terms of the aim of the competition and what steps do they need to take to attain this?

- continue as we are now?

- merger of clubs?

- try to produce an even competition with no club continually stronger than the rest?

- zoning of players to clubs by address or school?

- number of divisions in District?

- domestic competitions?

Discussion?

Great Topic. Surely with an opportunity like this they will make some changes so we dont continue to have the same model we used in the 70's and 80's.

- look at the 12 month time committment placed upon young children.
- look at the never ending training and tournament committments placed on young kids and their families. Why do we lose so many at U18 level??
- start zoning country areas to slow the stronger clubs
- Re structure Summer season in
junior grades to include country associations both North and South to increase participation, and help build the sport at grass roots.

The bottom line being, think of
BASA as a single organisation. If it were one of its member clubs trying to rebuild after a
collapse, Im sure they would start with their juniors. Why not make some innovative changes NOW!!!

For the junors(u/10-U/12) they should have what basa said would happen the norther teams play each other in a comp and the southern teams play in a comp and the winners of each comp play in the grand final at the end it would be a good system but basa changed there mind. Also they need to change the older age groups aswell, make it 2 games a week instead of one with less trainin but more play it maks it more fun and comp would be better. playerslearn more from games

The improve the sport both the elite and participation levels need to be catered for rather than a one size fit's all competition.

Over summer have 1 competition for teams that want to make it into the elite level with a qualification series for div 1/2/3. All team that want can enter. All other teams play in a localised regonal competition with minimal trainings.

Over winter have a div 1 comp with a maximum of 8 teams in each comp. Have 3 rounds with only those players who want to be competitive qualifying for the grade. All other teams play in the regonalised competitions.

This way we can have a ccompetition which increases the level of competition for the elite, while also allows a regonalised competition which can be tailored around players other commitments.

79154, perfect.

That has my vote and I reckon that is what could happen. Pro / Rel, Regionalisation, all basketball in one competition = better competition, more participation and better opportunities.

(#79141)& (#79154) I hope someone that is in a position to make changes to our great sport is reading this.

Great suggestions.

let's get real here folks.

we should work out which club is the biggest, and just make everyone play for them. that would solve all our problems.

Zoning is rediculous for juniors!

Your gonna tell little Jonny from U12's he cant play with his buddies cos he lives across the road that divides clubs!

Zoning for the country = zoning to stop sturt. There's a new one!

Cutting down the season lengths is a great idea but training's need to stay the same - we have great fundamentals for a reason.

2 games a week for U20's would be awsome, but you have to remember a lot of U18's have year12 commitments that parents will want put first so a extra game there may be pushing it.

Scrap the Easter carnival. More emphasis on National Club Champ's for U16s and U18s, making identifying young talent easier.

you cant have mergers and regional comp. There are barely be enough clubs to sustain a north and south division as it is, but in theory 2 regional divisions is a good idea.

promotion relegation for sure.

no deeper than Div 4 - rememeber clubs can have 2 or more teams in lower grades

anyone at least not able to play div 4 standard - should be directed to a domestci comp somewhere

expansion of domestic comps

the thing that wayne jackson said about all basketball comoing under 1 roof ie church, district, social, miniball etc
IS EXACTLY WHAT PHIL SMYTH SAID WHEN HE RETURNED TO ADELAIDE IN THE 90S

I like expand div 1 to 12 teams

the 10 clubs plus 2 extra spots

the top 2 div 2 teams after their season can play the clubs with 2 div 1 teams to see who gets promoted relegated.

so centrals and mavs still get their div 1 thing and teh sturts, norwoods, eagles, rockets etc can slug it out who gets the second div 1 team - creating that sort of competition that the more advanced groups crave.

good time to talk mergers - but i can't see any happening

(#79185) They will be watching, but remember change should include a structure to grow the sport, help the struggling Clubs, and still cater for the elite and national competition.(#79196) you have lost the plot

2 bench players from div 1 junior teams can play in div 2

this would help struggling clubs and help the bench kids only getting 2 minutes of div 1 court time

I hope that something like this could happen.

My spirits have been lifted!
