NBL

The NBL has named the ten players who are finalists for induction into the NBL Hall of Fame in 2006, with Brisbane Bullets legend 'Leaping' Leroy Loggins and Adelaide's 'Chairman of the Boards' Mark Davis amongst the contenders.

The NBL will announce this year's Hall of Fame inductees at a special gala dinner on the Gold Coast on June 10 this year, but has revealed the ten players who are still in contention for the Philips Championship's highest honour.

The ten finalists from which the inductees will eventually be selected are Ray Borner, Brad Dalton, Davis, John Dorge, Chuck Harmison, Loggins, Dwayne McClain, Mike McKay, Paul Maley and Dean Uthoff.

NBL General Manager Chuck Harmison, who was recently named as a life member of the Wollongong Hawks for his storied playing career, said being named as a finalist for the Hall of Fame was an honour.

"When you look at the calibre of names on the list of finalists, and then look at the greats already in the Hall, it really does make you feel humbled to be considered in that sort of company," Harmison said. "Being named to the Hall of Fame is the single highest honour any player in our league can aspire to and I am sincerely grateful to be considered amongst the top ten in what will be one of the strongest induction classes ever."

The ten finalists were chosen by a ballot of the 24-member NBL Hall of Fame Committee from a list of eligible players. In order to be eligible, players must have made an outstanding contribution to the NBL, been retired for a minimum of four seasons, and have played 100 NBL games or more.

All eligible past players are placed on a ballot, with each member of the selection Committee asked to nominate a list of ten finalists. At this time, nominations are also called for the Contributors category.

The ten most nominated players are placed on the second ballot, as well as nominated contributors, and eligible coaches and referees, and forwarded to the Selection Committee.

In order to gain induction, a player must receive 75 percent of votes from the second ballot from the Selection Committee. A maximum of four players and a minimum of two players can be inducted each year, with a maximum of two non-players each year.

Currently there are 17 members of the NBL Hall of Fame, with the list including greats such as Cal Bruton (Player), Larry Sengstock (Player), Barry Barnes (Coach), Phil Smyth (Player) and John Raschke (Contributor).

Skyhook : "A maximum of four players and a minimum of two players can be inducted each year, with a maximum of two non-players each year"

I think Davis & Loggins are certainties. The others are all probably around the same level.

Kent, Paul Maley didn't win a title with the 36ers. He was with us for two seasons, and both ended in game 3 of the semi finals, D-Mac's game winner and Lowery's free throws.

We won the two titles just before he arrived and the one after he retired. Very unfortunate timing.

Davis for sure, and Loggins should already be there with Borner! McKay, Uthoff and Dorge ??? Don't see how they are of the same calibre if Davis, Loggins, and Borner are the measuring sticks.

Bearcat, Mike McKay made his NBL debut under Coley in '83 so just missed out on the 1982 NBL title.

Bearcat, I tend to agree. I'm almost positive I've seen footage of McKay playing on court with the championship group, even if he was "only" a squad member.
