Is Ben Wallace worth the MAX???

Been thinking about this for a while, "is Big Ben worthy of a max contract"

With his pending free agency this year I'm guessing it's his pay day, but I seriously doubt if he is worthy of a maximum contract.

I'm guessing he will be a getting a max deal considering the Hawks, Hornets, and the Bobcats are well under the cap and would probably be willing to chuck him the $$$$ and push the price up.

Would the Pistons be willing to match it for a 31 year old centre who averages 7.3 ppg, 2.20 bpg, and 10.7 bpg and a truckload of intensity???

Some figures being talked about include a max offer of 5-year $105 million contract. The figures for this contract are (working with the CBA)
Year 1: $17,500,000
Year 2: $19,337,500
Year 3: $21,175,000
Year 4: $23,012,500
Year 5: $24,850,000

TOTAL: $105,875,000

If Dumars gives him this then I think he's mad. I'd be willing to give him 1/2 of the above contract over the 5 years, or at push over 4.

Wonder if the Pistons now wish that they kept Darko???

No way. Does the dirty work better than anyone else in the NBA....but just isnt a individual game winner.

Without getting off track neither does Carmelo Anthony (he is fishing for it). The max should only be given to absolute game winners such as Lebron and maybe Kobe. Overall, this season LA overachieved tremendoulsy with one star and an excessive amount of role players, Odom included.

Opps, is he was average 10.7 bpg I'd pay the max, but not for 10.7 rpg...

What you have to look at is Ben Wallace has made the Pistons what they are and deserves to be rewarded for it. With him at centre they stand title contenders for years to come. They have worked things out financially so they can give him the max and as a player purely alone he may not deserve it but lets not forget he is the reigning DPOY and without him the Pistons cannot contend for an NBA title. This year is also weak in free agents so he cannot be replaced. When you look at it in the sense as Ben Wallace purely as an individual player then he is not worth the max...but if they can afford it then i think he deserves it.

Considering how they are capitulating to the Heat in this series, maybe they need to start a rebiulding process. Giving Wallace a max contract means that they will have less ability to tak on and move contracts over the next 5 years.

I'd give him $55 mil over 5 years. He is a great player and a vital part of their team, but isnt worth $100 mil EVER !
He is a defensive specialist and i dont think the Pistons should jeopardize their future spending capacity on him.
Might be smart for him to go to another team and mentor young bigs in how to play hard NBA defense. Then if he stays productive himself he might be worth a bit more.

He is not worth the money at all. He has given them very little in the Miami series and I think they should be starting McDyess who at least gives them a scoring threat. Big Ben is too scared to out up any shots as he gets fouled and misses the free throws.

If I was Detroit I would have a good look at Ilgauskas or Bogut.

yes, Ben Wallace is possibly in the top 3 defensive players in the league, but I wouldn't pay him the maximum under the NBA system. About 80% would be the limit I would offer. if he was able to increase his scoring by about 4ppg (all he would need to do is improve his FT%), then i would consider maximum, but scoring has never been his strongest suit, and he seems happy being the D in Detroit.

Initially, Wallace was going to hire an attorney, on an hourly basis, to iron out his new deal.

But the worrying thing is that he recently hired Arn Tellem, one of the most powerful agents in the NBA to negotiate for him.

I have heard he is only puching for a 4 year deal due to his age, but I think he will push for more than $12 mil a year.

I reckon this contract is the big one he thinks he is due after being underrated his whole career...

'Ben Wallace is possibly in the top 3 defensive players in the league'

Umm, John, are you saying that the reigning and 4-time DPOY is only POSSIBLY in the top 3 defensive players the NBA?

Big Ben is awesome at the role he plays within the pistons team. I have yet to see a Centre in the NBA that can have as big an impact on a team, every game, then Big Ben....

And besides, Did anyone see the HUGE block on Shaq in Game 5?? Shaq ended up on his ass!!

And lost the jump ball after it

I'm a die-hard Detroit Pistons fan, so I'd of course like to see Ben Wallace play for the Pistons until he retires. But I'll try to be impartial in my assessment of the situation.

Here's some statistics for Ben Wallace from the 2005-06 regular season:

- 82 games played (First time he's played 82 games in his career, averaged 78.33 games per season over 6 seasons in Detroit)
- 36.20 minutes per game

- 7.28 points per game
- 5.67 field goals attempted per game
- 2.89 field goals made per game
- 50.97% field goal percentage
- 3.61 free throws attempted per game
- 1.50 free thows made per game
- 41.55% free throw percentage

- 3.67 offensive rebounds per game
- 7.59 defensive rebounds per game
- 11.27 total rebounds per game

- 1.93 assists per game
- 1.07 turnovers per game
- 1.80 assist-to-turnover ratio

- 1.78 steals per game
- 2.21 blocks per game
- 2.00 fouls per game
- 1.66 steal-to-turnover ratio
- 1.10 block-to-foul ratio

Positions: Centre, Power Forward
Height: 6'9" (really only 6'7")
Weight: 240lbs
Salary: $6,000,000

Wallace's value isn't in statistics alone. Wallace brings intensity, effort, commitment and the desire to work hard and play defense. Not just enough to get by so he can run up the other end and score again. Actual defence. He is the undisputed best defensive player in the league. You know you'll be getting value for money if you're the Pistons organisation, because you know he's going to give maximum effort the whole time he's on the floor, and is not going to take games (or even plays) off. These traits are becoming increasingly rare in basketball players (and society in general) these days. Wallace will be 32 years old when the next season commences. His physical condition would be the envy of anyone, so that should never be an issue as he gets older (a la Shaquille O'Neal).

And with the free throws, for the amount of shots he takes per game at the line, a small increase would have minimal effect. I know that a few points here and there can be the difference between a win and a loss, so here's an idea of what an increase in percentage can do for Wallace:
50% - 25 extra points, points-per-game average increases to 7.59
60% - 55 extra points, points-per-game average increases to 7.95
70% - 85 extra points, points-per-game average increases to 8.31
80% - 114 extra points, points-per-game average increases to 8.67
90% - 144 extra points, points-per-game average increases to 9.04
So as you can see, it wouldn't have a huge impact.

It could be said that if he was generally a more capable scorer, he'd get fouled more, therefore increasing his number of attempts and making it more of a problem. I think he has more of a chance of improving his poor free throw percentage than say Shaquille O'Neal. Wallace has a soft shot with a nice arc on his shot when he's at the line, whereas O'Neal has a flat, darting shot. Wallace already has one of the main obstacles out of the way. He just needs to line it up with the centre and it'll fall nearly every time.

Personally, I think Wallace is worth in the order of $12.5 Million per year, for 4 years. That's roughly 25% of the salary cap, and more than double his previous salary. He is the face of the Detroit franchise and personifies their ethos. He isn't an egotistic person from what I can gather, so I'm sure he'll accept a little less money than what other teams are willing to pay if it means he can have his current position in Detroit. It's not worth upsetting the chemistry of a championship-calibre team and letting go the cornerstone of your franchise and current success just by being cheap, so if the Pistons need to pay a few million extra per season for Wallace's services, then so be it.

The verdict: Re-sign for $50 Million/4 years

Ok, it seems most people are in the same ball park.... but if you were Joe Dumars and the Bobcats or Hawks and they offer $70 million over 5 would you match it???
