What happens ?

Watching SBS World News (as you do) a couple of hours ago, the newsreader said something about Serbia and Montenegro having slit up and become two different countries. If this is true, what happens to their teams competing in the soccer world cup and the basketball world championships? Do they still compete as a duel entry or do they compete under the name of Serbia? Are they even allowed to compete at all know that they are two separate nations or is it because they qualified as a "nation" they are allowed to compete as a "nation".

Similar thing has always bugs me when it comes to Great Britain.

At the COmmonwealth Games and the World Cup they compete as the seperate identities England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland yet at the Olympics they compete under the one banner of Great Britain.

Still do crap tho :-)

Actually, M2006 was the last time that the separate countries will be competing like that. In 2010, they will compete under the banner of Great Britain, as per the Olympics.

Do you think England has realised that Scotland has some world class swimmers and wants them on board for future commonwealth games? The commonwealths are fools gold in any event.

International tournaments have very broad rules about what consitutes a nation. They have to - there are many different types of countries and some are not recognised by other nations.

Several years ago, a few guys set up a "Hutt River Province" Olympic team, which was essentially a fundraising exercise for local junior sport and a discussion point around the bar. The funny thing was, it appeared the rules for the Olympics were so broad that if you considered yourself to be a seperate nation, then you were eligible.

It makes sense when you think about it - there would be no advantage in each Australian state entering teams in international events, so the Olympic movement doesn't care if you want to divide yourself into smaller nations.
