Sports Illustrated on Newley
9. Andrew Bogut and Luke Schenscher may not be the only Australians in the NBA for long.
I've been referring to 6-6 Aussie guard Brad Newley as "The Bed-Head Guy" this week; he shows up at the camp each morning with his hair on the back of his head sticking straight up and the front part pressed down. "The bed-head is pretty common in Australia," Newley explained to me. "I actually had a Mohawk before this, but people in the NBL [Australia's top league] were calling me Billy Idol, so the bed-head is my new one. Some guys there grow the mullet, even, but that's not me yet."
Coif aside, the 21-year-old Newley is a solid prospect. He averaged 19.3 points for Townsville in the NBL this season and has flashed an impressive shooting stroke and passing ability in the camp thus far. He went to high school with Andrew Bogut at the Australian Institute of Sport (later playing with Bogut in the 2003 World Championships) and said he turned down scholarship offers from Arizona, Gonzaga and Utah. The intrigue of being a foreign-born scorer seems only to have helped his draft buzz, as a number of scouts believe he's second-round material.
