can someone explain this to me?

Hi - i am a new parent to this game and my child plays junior ball.

the coach talks about "split line"

What exactly is "split line"

draw a line from one hoop to the other hoop down the middle of the court.... thats called split line.

quite the contrary, it's the line in the middle, often called the half way line. Split line is the proper name, half way line is just the colloquial name.

It means that when the ball is on the opposite side of the court, your son should be on the split line. So that if the player with the ball drives past his defender your son can come of the split line and stop a lay-up. If the ball is then pass out to your son's player he can run out and stop the shot knowing that his teammate is now on the split line ready to help if his player drives past him.

Teach the kids to play on ball defense properly first.

In juniors we sometimes get too caught up on split line help and rotations.

Too much splitline help leads to lazy on ball defenders that get broken down all the time.
