Jonathan Bender announced his retirement on February 4th this year, due to chronic knee injuries. His waiving on June 14th was a mere formality, just to get the contract off the books. I'm pretty sure if you waive a retired player's salary, it ceases to count against the cap. Bender is yet to officially file retirement papers with the NBA, and he's only 25 years old (born 30/01/1981), so I'm guessing we haven't seen the last of him. I think he'll take this year off to fully heal his injuries without the pressure to get back out on the court, and then try to make a comback in the 2007-08 season.

Bender was 6'11", 195lb when he entered the league out of high school in 1999. He's now 7'0", 219lb. His lack of strength, especially in his legs, could have contributed to his constant knee injuries, which have supposedly plagued his since high school. His high-flying style wouldn't have helped things either. If he gains more strength, he can come back and be close to the player he was projected to be when he was the #5 overall pick of the in the 1999 NBA Draft. He was originally drafted by the Toronto Raptors (traded on August 8, 1999 to the Pacers for Antonio Davis), and his cousin is long-time Raptors SG Morris Peterson, so maybe if he does come back, it might be in Toronto.

He's been used mostly as a PF over his career, due to Indiana's lack of legitimate post options (only Jermaine O'Neal and Rik Smits). Their wealth of SF types (Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, Jalen Rose, Ron Artest, Derrick McKey) during his career have prevented him playing in the 3 spot more often, where his athleticism and skills (he's a good outside shooter) would have been better suited. Because of this, as well as his injuries, he's always been considered a disappointment. It hasn't been as highlighted as the undeachievement of a Kwame Brown or a Darius Miles, because the Pacers have been a perennial playoff team (and even made the Finals in 2000) during his career.

Hopefully Bender can make a comeback next season and continue to show his skills. If he doesn't choose to continue with basketball in a playing capacity, hopefully he can have a fulfilling life away from the game (maybe get the college education he missed out on) and not be in pain due to his knees.
