Cairns Taipans sign import big man
Fresh on the heels of the 36ers signing Nick Horvath, the Cairns Taipans have secured Kevin Owens - a 6'10", 230 lb replacement for Chris Burgess. Played in college for Monmouth, averaged 12 and 8.6 in his senior year.
I think that gives Cairns most of their ten signed (maybe nine?). Townsville have their two imports. West Sydney might want to nab someone soon, surely?
We whine a bit as 36er fans, but can you imagine being a Pigs fan right now? One go to man, zero imports, seven guys that would be on the bench for most other teams.
Anyway, the Cairns roster to date is:
Grabau
Boodnikoff
Cattalini
Mee (import)
Oakley
Stewart
Martin
Rose (replacement for injured Boodnikoff)
Owens (import)
When Mee is naturalised during the year, they will have an import spot spare, though may be hard pressed to fit one under the points cap.
You'd have to say that they'll want another big man with only Oakley and Owens really boasting that much height. Maybe they'll re-sign Matt Smith though he's never played more than occasional minutes in the past.
