Erin Phillips To Leave Lightning!

Directly from the assistant coach of another WNBL team. "I am very confident that Erin will play with us next season, We will go to any extremes to get her here".
Apparently Lightning have not even mentioned the posibility of re-signing the dynamic point guard while other clubs have been in contact!

Lightning Better STOP her and snap her up quick otherwise not only the face of the Lightning but of the whole WNBL will be playing for someone else....Thats if its not too late!!
Erin leaving would be a DISASTER!!

However it wouldn't shock me!! They better not lose Erin. She is crowd favourite and losing her would costs Marino Dearly!!

In saying that... Do you think they are not signing her to make way for Vince's daugheter Angela to take the role in daddys team?

Why is everyone on this site so fucking cynical about the 36ers and Lighting management?

Why would Erin move interstate? Her boyfriend (Ivan Maric) playing for the Adelaide Crows and isn't moving anytime soon, her family lives in Adelaide and she spends 6 months of the year living on the other side of the globe. If she wanted more money she would go to Europe and play.

She is a very loyal person to her family and basically hates that she has to be apart from them for the 6 months now, no way is she looking at moving to another WNBL team.

I wonder sometime if Isaac has a contract with one of the gossip magazines and he just supply's information.

Jimmy, do you have a particular concern with the initial post? If the Lightning haven't contracted her for next year, and another team are very confident, what's your beef?

The other post made just before yours makes an obvious link between the position played by Angela Marino and Erin Phillips, but it's nothing more than a suggestion and certainly not an accusation.

Erin is a 1 in a million guard - she plays with such passion and heart that it would have to be a given that the Lightning would make her their premier signing - wouldn't it?
As for Marino - she has always had a love of the game and has developed OK but toss up between Erin and Angela and sorry Marino, Erin would win hands down.

Ahh, it's Dana - the eternal defender of all things Smyth/36ers. How wonderful it would be to live in your world with Jimmy The Snitch where the Sixers are the best team in the history of the known universe, Phil Smyth is the greatest coach of all time, and all the current problems are the result of everything BUT the current coach and players.

Is it not possible that other teams are actually recruiting (take note Phil) and pursuing a great PG in Erin? No? Of course it is, that's how you win championships. Maybe Erin is not closed to the idea of playing for another club. Maybe Lauren Jackson said "Hey Erin, why not play with me at Canberra and we will be the best 1-2 punch the league has ever seen." Surely this would be attractive and have to be strongly considered. Hey, maybe Ivan isn't getting it done where it matters. Who knows?

If being a supporter without voicing my concerns in a 'they're all hopeless' way means I have my head in the sand then so be it.

Sheesh, most people like to have support when they're going through a hard time. It might come across as 'head in the sand' to others, but I'm very happy to be told by many people involved with the 36ers. that 'We need more fans like you.'

Dana, expressing your opinion on this forum carries more weight in terms of how many people see it and have a chance to respond to it than dialling Coast FM with your weekly feel good phone call. You can go through my entire posting history and see my views.

I dare say more people read posts on here than listen to Coast FM. Not bagging the show, just sheer numbers.

Calling in to a radio show (sometimes twice a week) and saying how wonderful the Sixers are and how unfair it is that people are bagging them does not show any "guts" as you put it. The Club needs to know that long term paying supporters are beyond disappointed with recent happenings, not just the win/loss record, but failed signings, missed opportunities, poor management, lazy coaching, lack of heart etc etc.

Both you and Jimmy show an amazing ability to see the best in every situation and interpret everything in favour of Phil/Players/Club.

According to you, and despite being correct numerous times by Isaac whose information has either come from sources very close to the action or from the horses mouth like the above info re:Erin, it is not possible that Ingles was offered a less than max contract, that Phil's rotations and timeouts have been completely shite and that Erin is not signed until 2026. Dana in the end , by loudly cheering and dialling Coast FM religiously once a week everything will be fine and dandy. Keep it up sunshine, you're my MVP.

Dana, you wrote to Jimmy: "don't waste too much time thinking they are based on any reality" - the opening post of this thread that Jimmy had issues with and to which you were replying - it sounded pretty realistic to me.

Yes, another team would be stupid not to try for Phillips. Yes, as thedoctor has outlined, you can't assume that she's all wrapped up here. And yes, she's not currently signed and an offer is yet to be put to her.

Obviously the Lightning want to lock her up ASAP, but I don't see what problems exist in that post in suggesting that losing her would be a massive loss and that she should be contracted for the future at the earliest opportunity.

You can take it a step further though Pure Silk/Dana and argue that some of the supporters who post the more negative yet factually based posts care more about the 36ers than yourselves.

If you see someone or something messing with the team you care about then do you not have the right to voice your concern?

Is that not one of the primary purposes of a forum such as this?

A lot of the criticism that appears on this forum is not of a personal nature and is constructive.

Besides, if you don't like what you read on this forum I take it that you don't read or enjoy Boti's articles? How negative has Boti's reporting been during years gone by. I recall articles with chronologies of alleged front office mistakes!

The 'negative' sentiment of supporters on this forum is fairly consistent with the opinion I get from other long term fans and ticket holders who don't post on this forum.

Way to play the man and not the ball doctor!!

Dana, like you, while I have several misgivings about this season, I have consitently said I will wait till seasons end before making a judgement on how it has progressed.

If (and admittedly so) a miracle occurs and 6ers make it to play offs, and give it a good shake, I don't want to be seen as one of the many people on here who will end up with egg on their face.

Also doctor....maybe your caught up with some other people who seem to think this forum is actually a BROAD representation of the basketball fans. Considering there have been 948 posts in the last 7 days (at the time of writing this, as supplied on top of the page), I could safely say not all these posts are from unique posters (ie people have posted something more than once which reduces the sample size) - I am sure Isaac could dig out the stats on how many original posters there have been (based no doubt on IP addresses, which of course would change every time someone logs on or off the net)....my point being even 948 out of a 4000 regular attendance at a 6ers game.....that makes just under 25% by my math - by no means a majority.

I must admit I get sick of seeing all the negativity on here, yes I can understand why people are feeling negative about this season...unfortunately as much as we love to say the Australian way is to give everyone a fair go, it doesn't apply when your favourite sports team is not in the glory year.

I lately have found myself regularly saying that I wont bother even reading this forum (and I hear the cheers even now)...but unfortunately my passion for basketball in general keeps drawing me back.

yogee, the forum is a cross-sample of the public. You can extrapolate from the readership. The real modification on data comes from who is actually saying something, not from the fact that readership is a smaller part of the public.

As I've said before, listen at games and around the place and you will hear exactly the same comments - people talking positively, people saying Copeland is too old, people saying Smyth sits on his hands, people saying Maher is playing too many minutes, that Nashy is in his final year(s), etc.

Yeah Isaac...that may be true, but as I have said before, it is a generally well recognised principle in business, those who are unhappy will say something, while those who are happy, wont bother.....

I work in the customer service field, I can tell you now, we dont get contacts from customers to say "hey, your fantastic, your doing a great job"...we get complaints 98% of the time.

My main point is it is unfair to label those of fans who refuse to twist the knife into a team who is obviously having its share of problems as having our "heads in the sand"...I dont think you find Dana, me, or any other fan who is of a similair mindset getting stuck into those fans who are having a go, apart from saying that all the negativity is getting tiresome.

However, every time we try and shine some sort of positive light (and there have been a couple...Sutton, Copes coming good), we get people like thedoctor who go straight into personal attacks.

You people definitely know more about basketball than me... but I do know a lot about the Phillips family. Greg-played for one SANFL side... and is still at that side. Erin adores her father and he certainly ingrained the morals, ethics and team spirit that Erin epitomises.
Why cant you people take her words for fact? She has over and over again said she is content in Adelaide playing for the Lightning. She has said her life ambitions are to marry Ivan and have his babies. To have a house in Henley and a million dogs...
If she was to go away for the year round it would be Europe. She would not leave Adelaide for a misely few more $$'s at an opposition club.
She wont leave Adelaide.
She is one of the most fiercly loyal people I know. She is passionate and proud. You only have to watch the kid glaring at that Aussie flag during the anthem.. or thanking the home crowd to know the stuff that this kid is made of.
Cut the crap. Sure every other side would want her... why wouldnt you??
But maybe for once lets not be so cynical. Her family, Ivan and the Adel quit lightning are things she holds very dear.
She will follow Sporny and be a one club legend.

Yogee, aren't you at Telstra though? I've never met a fan of Telstra so I'm not surprised you hear complaints! ;)

I'm sure that more are piping up with their criticisms than are trumpeting the good news, but maybe that's because we're 5-12 and the only games we've won since the start of November have been over the Pigs?

Head back to a thread from a good win and you'll see people talking about Horvath, Sutton and so on. When there's good news, people talk about it.

Now, my beef with your comment in this vein is that you're implying that the following is not true: "maybe your caught up with some other people who seem to think this forum is actually a BROAD representation of the basketball fans" - I'm saying that it most definitely IS a cross-section of the community, but the details come down to how many are voicing their opinion and the make-up of the positive-negative talk.

The threads on here are a pretty good reflection of what you hear at games. No one stands up at the end of a dodgy loss saying "go team!" Best case, they think "Hopefully we can do better next week!"

There is going to be no reconciliation between all fans on what constitutes a "real fan", whether it's fair to criticise the team, etc.

Has anyone on this forum gone upstairs at the end of a home game to listen to interviews with some of the players? I do every time and I can tell you that the room is full to capacity everytime. If the negativity on this forum regarding the team is a true cross section of the community, why do all these people continue to bother to extend their support by staying longer and listening to the players (& coaches). Sure there is disappointment when they lose a game, but the cheers for these players are just as loud as they have ever been.

What I consider to be cowardly is the fact that so many negative posts are made on this forum by people who continue to go to the games. Why bother if you feel that way? Why not just face the fact that you are a fan of the 36ers and be positive about what you say. I don't mean you have to pretend that they are good when they are not, but no malicious back stabbing either. I have seen a lot of things to be positive about in the games this year. The few wins have been positive but no one bothers to talk about these. There have been a few games where the noise generated by the crowd has been deafening. The atmosphere being electric. Example is the alley oop between Copeland and Farley a few weeks back. If that didn't send tingles down your spine then nothing would.

As for Stephon's comments about factually based posts, who on this forum can tell which posts are factual and which ones are not? All I can see is people's individual opinions of things. The only posts I am confident as being factual are the ones posted by Anonymous (as much as I hate people posting under that name)every Tuesday titled "Tonight on Talking Hoops". Only because the show proves it to be correct. I assume I may know who posts this but then question why they don't put their name to it.

thedoctor, your comments "I dare say more people read posts on here than listen to Coast FM. Not bagging the show, just sheer numbers." Have you stopped to cosinder how many people read and appreciate the recap that Jonno puts together every week after the show? Wouldn't you say that these posters also qualify as listeners as well because of their interest in knowing what was said on the show? Whether they directly listened to the program of just read the recap, they have had the same privilege that real listeners have. So if Dana calls up and makes some comments, they are made available to posters as well not just listeners.

Its the fans that stick by the club even in bad times that will ensure the survival of the club and I have no doubt that the negative postes are also included in this group. So why create a dark cloud over the matter.

EC, no - I don't consider readers of this forum listeners of the show. The re-cap is a paraphrased summary (which is very good). My point was that my posting history is there and can be seen by all. I can look at Dana's comments in Jonno's summary, but I donm't need to -they are the same every week.

EC, I accept that I am a fan of the Sixers but that doesn't mean that I have to be blindly fanatical.

Anon (#109752) I didn't suggest Erin was going to the Caps - just suggesting that there are many scenarios that might see teams aggresively pursuing Erin and her considering her options, nothing more.

Yogee, a difference in opinion is not a personal attack. Read my posts, there is nothing personal in them at all. Slight sarcasm, yes but no insults. I'm merely pointing out that things are not well at the Club for a reason and not everyone wears rose coloured glasses.

Dana, if you feel I included you in the generalisation that long term supporteres are beyond disappointed with this season amongst other things I apologise. I know your completely satisfied as a supporter. That's my point. You shouldn't be with the crap the club had delivered for the last few seasons. Even if you choose to outwardly blind support, surely you are less than satisfied behind closed doors? You agree that you interpret everything in favour of Phil/Players/Club. My point (I do have one, I think) is that there has to be accountability. To use the tired example of Ingles - why isn't he here? You and Jimmy would have us believe that it's because he's a lowdown, dirty snake who renegged on a "handshake" deal when we all know this is not the case.

I think it is the team's apologists who are prepared to accept mediocrity, that create the dark clouds. By giving the appearance you accept the poor form being dished up, will only lead to more of the same.

The fans (who still go to games) and are prepared to voice their negative feelings will be the ones to cause change (not to mention the ones who don't go to games). As the team is now privately owned, Mal can't afford to lose any more fans due to a poor product.

Why is it cowardly and "malicious back stabbing" (!) for someone to still attend games but put forward criticism of the team, club or product? Not every fan is like you. Some people like to watch, cheer and analyse (Boti quote: "I'm not a fan, I'm an analyst").

Everyone talks about the wins - where have you been?! There have been countless posts saying "we need more of Horvath" and "Sutton played well" and so on. Many have talked about Farley's alley-oop or the atmosphere in that NZ game despite the loss.

If people aren't over the moon and permanently remembering the wins, it's because two have come over the Pigs (once missing a strong scorer), one came over the Dragons (when they were missing an import and had just put in place a new coach) and another was over the Crocs in what was the least-convincing 20 point win I've seen in a long time.

Yogee as someone in customer service (as am I) you probably should have given the whole facts re complaints and praise.

In that it is a well known FACT that 1 in 20 (i,e 5%)is about the number of people who take the time to complain.

In other words times the number of complainers by 20 and you actually will be closer to the number of people who are disappointed, upset, not satisfied, with the goods or service you are providing.

I think this is Isaac's point.

I have no doubt the sentiments expressed on this site by the majority (but not all)of posters i.e disappointed and frustration at the club, coach and players, is the same opinion as the majority of 36er supporters who do not post.

Yogee,

In relation to post #(#109750) which team are you talking about??? I'm aware that you'd probably know a far amount more about the WNBL than I, but...

I'm presuming it's the Caps. Just remember that LJ comes off the books, and we haven't signed Baird (do you mean Bird) and Taurausi. When I last checked Veal and Fallon were in Sydney. Yes we have Bishop, and if we do sign Bird and Taurausi then it won't be for a full season, they will come in for around 10 games each (I wish it was for the season).

We are cashed up, plus Canberra has always been good to the Caps, shit, they are our only professional basketball team now, but it seems that a few of the elite WNBL teams can run two imports. Hell, if Graf can convince Bird and Taurausi to come here to Canberra and play for the current coin then all good for the Caps. If we can snag Erin on top of this, you'll be hearing me cheer from Adelaide.

TR - Yes I meant Bird, and no, I didn't mean Canberra.

If any Canberra fan thinks they will ever see LJ in a Caps singlet again is sadly mistaken.

LJ has quite clearly said she wants to play for another team if she plays WNBL again. She named the team, which I wont for not being sure of a legal stance, but she will be studying in a NSW University.

The Caps are who they'd be thinking about. And by "they'd be" I mean "they are".

And Fiji, yes, a minority will actually say something. In some sectors, there is data suggesting that 9/10 unhappy customers don't complain, and many just won't return. As we've gone through before, we've had some of the worst crowds in the history of the 36ers at the Dome this season - pricing is decent, advertising hasn't changed, so some people have a problem with the product (whether it's the performance or the team).

Those that I have heard of complaining to the club do so about things like the music (choice of, volume of), dancers' uniforms, that sort of thing.

EC, you should know as well as anyone that there are many people who post on this forum who have excellent connections and that a great deal of the information/rumours on this site are from extremely reliable sources.

If you posted a 'rumour' or information about Dusty I would take notice of what you posted because of your connection with him.

Hoops SA is the number 1 source of SA basketball information period. Dana, you posted that at least you know that Nagy is informed. That he is and he is arguably Australia's best basketball writer.

That is not to say that he does not write articles in a favourable way to Smyth to protect his relationship with the man and dare I say it his best source of information for his articles. That is just smart business relations.

Was it coincidental that while Smyth was having conflict with management there was a weekly article criticising the front office.

Then when a new administrator comes in who has a good relationship with Smyth there was little to no criticism of the loss of Dusty, Jacob, Oscar and the failure to secure Ingles.

Sure there are going to be ridiculous posts from time to time but overall the quality of the posts is excellent irrespective of whether they are positive or negative and indicative of the experience, knowledge and passion of the regular posters.

The majority of the criticisms of the 36ers are factual.

The 36ers are 5-12? Fact

The 36ers are giving up 107ppg and playing soft defence? Fact

Signing a team comprising of Maher, Copeland, Nash, Wheeler, Majstrovic, Horvath we were always going to be at risk of having a disrupted season due to injury? Fact

Smyth/management have failed to secure Adelaide born Boomers squad players in Schenscher, Newley, Ingles, Forman, Holmes? Fact

Not a single player confronted Abney after he took Hill's legs out? Fact

Maher at risk of an early season muscle tear as a result of playing over 40 minutes a game based on past history? Fact

36ers at risk of not being able to re-sign Hill due to Dean Brogan like minutes? Fact

36ers have not signed one non-Adelaide born player from AIS or NCAA during Smyth's coaching career? Fact

All these negative facts can be countered by the positive facts like the 3 championships, the top four finishes, etc, etc but I don't see the problem with people writing posts which are critical on this forum as long as they are not overtly personal in nature.

Could the low attendance also be something that has been evolving since the change to summer season?
Daylight savings sees you easily lose track of time, great weather and wanting to spend time outdoors and so on. I loved the winter basketball season, gave me a reason to get out in winter, whereas in summer, I want to be outdoors. I have season tickets but quite honestly when it was winter I can't recall missing more than one game in many seasons but in the past few years, I have missed heaps - especially leading up to xmas and the holiday period after. Am I the only one?

109926 - good post - I've started a new thread to give it a proper opening for response.

Stephon, there are not too many people on this forum that I personally know and therefore do not know their connections and what sort of an authority they are on the topic they write. I have always listened to Isaac's comments on various topics because of the connections he has and also related to a previous player would give him first hand information. I can distinguish between sheer nonsense that is sometimes written and more intelligent posts however no matter how intelligent it sounds, doesn't mean its factual.

I also value your comments on this forum because I know you, your connections to basketball and the sensibility that goes into the words you write. If however you were to post that the 36ers have just signed Timmons when nothing has been reported on this, I would have to question your sources.

On another note, I have never posted anything that I have known to be factual as it was not my position to reveal that. If it was information to be shared by the public, it would be revealed by the appropriate sources at the appropriate time.

Oops, I stuffed up proper.

I retract everything I said about clubs signing players, because I got it all twisted.

Canberra have said they want to sign Bird & Taurausi, which another thread has now said first Bird has heard of it.

LJ is off to Sydney if she ever comes back.

Apologies to anyone I may have upset / confused / etc
