Zoning....What's the Issue?

Lots of times on this forum the issue of zoning has arisen, some for, some against but rarely have logical reasons been given to support or dismiss it, so what are the pros and cons of zoning and is it a good or bad idea?
Should country areas be zoned to specific zoned clubs as in some other sports?
Which clubs would be disadvantaged by zones and why?
Would zones help stop poaching by clubs?
Wouldn't it simplify the transfer process by making it a residential transfer only?( that is players and parents would have to work harder to resolve issues at the club level rather than transfer out).
Would it encourage more clubs to
make more of an effort in their zoned country areas?
Do any of the other states zone?
Why do many see zoning as a negative idea, I'm sure there's plenty of reasons why not to zone , what are they?

Some clubs have good junior development programs and some are totally USELESS.

Some have been useless and are trying to improve.

Some have made that transition - eg Forestville went from a joke of a junior program to what is now a quite strong one.

Why should some child be penalised and forced into a shit program purely based upon where they live?

I'll say it - I don't think clubs "poach" from others. Few kids will want to leave their mates to go play at another club UNLESS THERE IS A COMPELLING REASON.

Zoning problems.

1/ Making the zones equitable, especially over time. ie how do you make a zone for Sturt, Forestville and South when they are all so close together.

2/ Clubs are not able to pay a coaching director. Who is going to develop each zone? Especially in country area's.

3/ A majority of players move becasue they are unhappy. Not becasue they are poached.

4/ Would decrease the ability for players to develop if they are zoned to a club that doesn't have the necessary coaching or development philosophy.

5/ No other states in Australia use zones.

6/ the idea of zoning is about bringing the best clubs downto the lowest common denominator, rather than having the weaker clubs improve themselves up to a higher standard.

Clubs could be "zoned" by the number of teams they are allowed to enter in each age group - say, only one in each division. In theory, excess players will move to another nearby club. Obviously it will be the lower division players who will make the move but it will increase the player pool at the new club.

The number of teams per division will need to be managed to allow for an increase in the number of players registered across the metropolitan area.

Lots of good points to chew over there.
On one issue though re Forestville, sturt and south being so close, maybe we have too many clubs.
I guess while its a club vs club thing with no one trying to go the next step then your last point is probably true.
Do the clubs run BSA or BSA run the clubs and what power does BSA have in regards to member clubs?

DTEI like zoning too. The bastards just cut my street from 70km/h to 50km/h!

5067,

Zoneing is about only allowing players inside a certain "boundry line" to play for an individual club.

Only allowing clubs to enter a certain number of teams means that they could essentially have only players from outside their "boundries" play for them.
