Funny AU Hoops reviewed: BA and NBL to combine

The review recommendations are in and there's no real surprise:

Big basketball review recommendations released

A move to a single unified national body is the overriding recommendation of the Steering Committee Report released today reviewing the structure and governance of basketball in Australia.

The independent review set up in March 2007 by Basketball Australia (BA), the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), was conducted by Ernst & Young and overseen by a Steering Committee consisting of the President of Basketball Australia, John Maddock, NBL club owner Eddy Groves and the CEO of the Australian Sports Commission, Mark Peters.

"Basketball has faced up to the need for considerable change and is poised to move forward in a positive way to ensure its future success," ASC CEO Mark Peters said as Chairman of the Steering Committee.

Attempting to determine how to best manage the relationship between BA and the NBL, the Steering Committee recommended the establishment of a new body constituting as a company under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cwlth).

Provided the recommendations of the Steering Committee are supported by the two organisations, which could happen as early as mid-December 2007, a transitional board will be established to oversee the smooth evolution to an independent governance and single management structure.

The new body would be governed by an independent seven person Board; a significant change from the current two-board, two management structure, where BA and the NBL operate separately.

Eddy Groves, representing the NBL owners, and John Maddock support the new direction.

"A formalised franchise agreement between the new Company and each of the NBL Clubs would be established which will provide greater uniformity and a blueprint for a much improved positioning of the NBL," Groves said.

"This is an exciting time for the sport of basketball, with the commitment of all members to major reform that will position the sport in the best way possible to ensure its increasing popularity and success well into the future," Basketball Australia President John Maddock said.

No fun at all. BTW, balls for replies count towards the leaderboard. For new topics they're just to draw attention to a notable thread or event.

I don't think they do - couldn't be bothered looking to check, but you could count if you wanted!

One day I want to set it up so there are different balls for different types of posts - informative, helpful, funny, etc. One day...

enough about the balls...this is a good outcome for basketball and the nbl in my opinion. Not only should it more heavily involve NBL teams with junior clubs but it should help the nbl with more money (i am assuming) from the government towards the national basketball body.

basketball australia gets funding from the government through the australian sports commission. My unifying the league and BA one wouod think that Basketball Australia would contribute alot more towards the professional league...and possibly that the sports commission would give more money to BA
