(Sunday, 5 October 2008) Despite their unbeaten 3-0 record in this season's Slingers Challenge Series, the handicapped Slingers were put to the test this afternoon, coming away with a respectable 8190 loss against visiting NBL team Sydney Spirit.

With star players Eric Sandrin and Armein Kirkland both out of play due to injury that may see the former out of play for up to ten weeks, the home team struggled to make up for the lack of firepower and inside presence on the court.

Despite a fiery Blagoj Janev and guard Darren Ng's efforts to step up to the plate, subsequent poor rebounding by the Slingers made way for several second-chances that the visitors capitalised on to stretch an initial two-point lead at the end of the first quarter to 4637 at half time.

The game was lost in the second quarter as the Slingers conceded 27 points to Sydney and proved unable to rebound from that despite matching the visitors point for point in the second half. Forward Liam Rush sparked the Sydney Spirit's offence by netting 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field by the end of the second quarter.

Top-scorer Blajoj's 22 points and a vocal crowd were not enough to spur the Slingers to victory as slippery passes and missed baskets paved the way for the Sydney Spirit, who are currently placed ninth in the 10-team Australian Basketball League (NBL).

Switching to a full-court pressure defence in the fourth quarter, the Slingers managed to cut a 15-point gap to as close as 9 points. However, poor shooting by the home team resulted in several missed opportunities that sealed their fate as Sydney came away with a 90-81 victory.

Slingers Head Coach Gordie McLeod rued the team's loss, saying: "It is disappointing to lose after three wins at home, but we really had a disruptive week during our training sessions. Two of our key players were injured, and we were unable to go through our usual training routine. Eric (Sandrin) broke three bones in his back after his bad fall in the game against Air21, and as our top rebounder both offensively and defensively, it is a big loss for the team."

Continued McLeod of Sandrin's stand-in, "Jamal was newly drafted into the team and had a good game, but unfortunately he has not had the time to gel with the team. However, we will get four good days to train with him next week, and are confident for a good showing against Beijing Aoshen."
