Bernie Lewis RIP

I just heard that apparently Berni Lewis and his wife both died in a Plane accident in NZ.

Is this true? If so it is very very sad.

Very, very sad news.

Bernie was a legend of the club, and was instrumental behind the last 3 championships, with doing a lot of the wheeling and dealing to get certain players, and coaches to join the club.

Bernie leaves behind a very important legacy to the Adelaide Basketball Club, and would be fondly remembered by most people who have had the honour to meet him.

Go with Grace, Bernie. RIP.

More info from the ABC:

Mr Lewis came from humble beginnings.

Born in the UK to a working class family, he came to Adelaide with his parents as a boy, beginning his life in Australia at a Gepps Cross Migrant Hostel.

Later in business he led the merger of the Hindmarsh and Adelaide Permanent Building Societies and founded the mortgage broking firm which bears his name.

He was chairman of SA Great and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, an Adelaide city councillor and played a prominent role in sport including seven years as chairman of the Adelaide 36ers.

Met him in business circles: a great guy! Peace & Wishes to his family.

I heard on the radio a service is happening on Friday at the Dome. Assume BASA or some1 will send news release soon.

From the ABC this morning:

Bernie Lewis's funeral to be held at basketball stadium
8:47 AM February 4

Thousands of people from South Australia's business and sporting communities are expected to pack Adelaide's Beverley basketball stadium next Friday, for a funeral service for Bernie and Christine Lewis.

The leading Adelaide businessman and his wife were killed in a light plane crash near Taupo on New Zealand's North Island on Wednesday and their bodies were recovered yesterday.

Mr Lewis's son, Mark, has told the ABC the family had decided to hold the service at the stadium, given Mr Lewis's love of basketball and his seven years as chairman of the Adelaide 36ers.

Mark Lewis and his sister, Vanessa, are now in New Zealand, and plan to bring their parents' bodies home next Monday.

Bernie if your up there with axx 2 the net id just like to let you know you were/are legend of the Adelaide 36ers and we will probs not have a chairman like you again infact no club in the NBL will have a chairman like you . Its a shame to see you go , hopfully you will be able 2 watch your team and help them win another championship

RIP Bernie

p.s the sixers should retire a jersey or somthing wit Bernie Lewis on the back of it , in his memory.
