NBL Pre-Season Competition to feature in Darwin!

Just picked up on this from FIBA.com...

The NBL pre-season competition featuring all 8 NBL teams will be played in Darwin (of all places)!

"Unlike previous NBL "blitzes" which have featured shorter modified games, it is believed the plan for Darwin is now to play four fully-timed games on each of three consecutive nights at Marrara Stadium and DBA Stadium.
The games will be staggered to start at 5pm, 6pm, 7pm and 8pm each night from Thursday, September 3 through to the finals on Saturday, September 5."

"The league has gone from four 12-minute quarters to four 10-minute quarters this year in line with FIBA rules."

"It is understood the NT Government will make an announcement formally confirming the NBL Top End Challenge tomorrow."

So can anyone see the pre-season comp being played in Darwin assisting with the promotion of the game in the states the teams come from? Very interesting and intriguing decision...

I agree, but maybe it was the only way they could afford to run a pre-season competition at all?

Will be interesting to see if the Fox announcement today makes any mention of a highlights package from the Top End Challenge. That would make it worthwhile in terms of promotion of the NBL and Darwin.

But with the amalgamation, the NBL is a BA vehicle to promote basketball in general around the country. BA would certainly be eyeing of a Darwin team, especially if they go with the two league option in the next couple of years.

I'm all for having Sydney back in the comp, but Sydney itself seems to be the least interested in getting back in.
They didn't even have an interested party lodge an application to be in the League- where has all the interest from within Sydney itself gone?

From an outsider looking in, Sydney seems to be losing interest in most sports. When the Swans lose, they struggle to get a crowd and hence the Tassie option is looking far better as the next new AFL team, the NRL is lucky to get 15k to each game, and the NBL was lucky to get 500! Seems to be a trend happening...

I thought this wasn't going to happen after Boti's story in the paper.

NTG will fund a blitz in Darwin every year if the NBL wants it.

With Darwin getting invitations to play across Asia, BA needs to be on board.
