East Coast Challenge

How are the SA teams looking for the East Coast Challenge in Sydney in January ? NSW have named the strongest list since the tournament's beginnings, not sure how the Vics, SA or ACt look. I expect the Vics to have a decent list.

4 top age girls U18 and 6 bottom age U18. All played State except 1. None of them are U16's.

Actually, considering the tournament has Vic metro and NSW metro, ECC would be a stronger tournament.

SA girls U18's are going to get smashed....Both Vic teams very strong....
Vic U16 teams just as strong.... 2010 good year for Vics again!!!

On paper SA Country girls very talented and should have had the edge at last years 16's, but for some reason can't pull it out on big game days and were easily beaten twice by Vics...

Waste of time the ECC....It's a stupid tournament for the state directors and coaches to insurance their selections.

VIC will again dominate!!!! Girls and Boys 16's and 18's

Make's me sick how many different sessions our junior players have to attend to make a tournament like this.

no wonder we have so many injuries with our young kids.
BA need to look at the entire portfolio of pretend coaches and Junior workload and expectations

Five of the ten girls going come from the fourth ranked team on the ladder, Sturt which says it all really.

Actually think it's an extremely valuable tournament. How do you know which kids can compete at the next level, unless you see them play against the next level?

Dont think the Vic 16's are all that fantastic this year, in boys and girls both. Having two teams, the depth of the state gets tested, and that is where Vic may have an advantage.

re: East Coast Challenge

Amazing that we get this subject all the time when it happens in most other sports when players get to an elite level. TAC Cup, SANFL, WAFL, Netball Cricket etc all have extra sessions for fitness, skills, Individual skills or running coaches. It is just the nature of the early identification process that Athletes go through in most parts of the world and we are no different.

Yes, the workload should be monitored and be somewhat flexible at times, but you still see kids playing lower level competition when they have a chance to get down time so the answer is not as clear cut as we all think.

Parents and players should discuss the involvment with coaches prior to trying out for these teams. We are constantly being told by parents that " Little Johnny " wants to Play in NBA or get drafted to the AFL. Ask the kids who make it about how much time is involved, it doesn't happen if you do not put in the work - Any elite level of sport.

Reason Vic Metro do so well is the bulk of the stronger country players go to Albury and Port Macquarrie so the Vic metro teams have less to challenge them.

At Albury they play all top age for un16 un18 but these are the players they will select from for their State sides.
At Port it odd yrs so un15s and un17, these players still get a chance for selection, but they have to stand out.
ECC Vic teams have what they will look at as possible State selections, plus many who missed out its a very deep pool of players Vic has due to the very large competition, throw their country players into the mix and it just gets deeper.

ECC has only been running 4 yrs, Country Cup and Pacific Coast Slam over 20yrs.

A couple of people (Ceres22) have mentioned the strength (or possible lack thereof) of the tournament. ECC is NSW Metro, VIC Metro, SA & ACT teams - NSW Country & VIC Country go to Pacific Coast Slam (Port Macquarie) for odd age and Country Cup (Albury) for even age. If memory serves me correct, SA send a COUNTRY team to PCS but I'm not sure about what team they send to Country Cup. New Zealand send teams to PCS also, and NSW Metro send ONE odd age team per age group to PCS on invitation (NSW Country & VIC Country generally have two each).

Hope this clarifies why country aren't at ECC.

SD.
