Gary Ervin firming to stay with Hawks

The Wollongong Hawks' chances of keeping gun import Gary Ervin are firming by the minute after the playmaker's agent yesterday declared a new deal a "slam dunk".

New York-based Marquis Taylor gave the strongest indication yet the off-contract point guard would remain in Wollongong - before making a mercy dash back to the US to be with his sick grandmother.

Taylor arrived last Friday to start negotiations with outgoing Hawks CEO Wayne Morris, but was forced to cut short his stay after his grandmother suffered a heart attack.

Despite the interruption Taylor believed the MVP contender would sign for next season within the next month.

"I think it will be a slam dunk," Taylor said.

"It won't take much to keep him here.
"It's not going to be a long, drawn-out process," Taylor said.

"They have been great to Gary.

"Gary loves the Gong and they love Gary."

No suprises there. Ervin has been a great fit for the Hawks. Too bad for Sixers fans though, because we could really use someone like him.

Great for the league to retain a quality import in a small market. This is a good result as Ervin has been a breath of fresh air.

Great for the league and well done to Wollongong to ensuring they hold onto him. Not bad for a small town when you can keep a guy from New York loving the place.

McLeod:

"Gary had a great year and fitted in so well with the team and the community. We've had good talks with his agent, but he'll have some chances put in front of him and he deserves those chances.

"If it comes down to a money thing, we're limited with our budget, and unless there's a white knight out there to top us up ... we'll put an offer on the table for Gary and he has to make a decision that's best for him and his family."

Now unfirming to stay with Hawks...

Coach Gordie McLeod said he won't be surprised if Ervin has played his last game in Wollongong colours.

'‘He certainly hasn’t ruled out coming back so you never know, but I wouldn’t be super-confident,’’ McLeod said.

‘‘The realistic thing is that Gary is a professional player and he’s at a stage where he’s looking at everything presented to him and evaluating everything, and he knows we’re not spending to the [NBL’s million-dollar salary] cap.
