Reward the defence

I'm so sick of referees who don't reward good defence in basketball
As coachs our major job is to teach our players good offence and defence
And when they finally play good defence you penalise them
It's about time we reward good defence doesn't happen as much as it needs to in south Australia

A refs job isn't to reward players or good plays, it's to penalise bad play. You don't see ref allowing 2 points cause a kid made a good play on O but the ball rims out.

OP, maybe you can give your players little gold stars when you think they need a reward.

Heard a ref in a game the other week say he was rewarding the other team for playing aggressively on offense, which was why the fouls got called against the defence (even though there was no actual foul). It's a fair thread all things considered. Refs need to stop being protected as if they have it hard. Any other job somebody complains you get repremanded if doing a poor job, but a referee does a bad job and the person complaining is told to stop whinging?

Referees are basically volunteers so if you want to punish them for poor performance you will have no one to referee your games. The funny thing then is that the by laws state each team will supply a referee - so pick the two parents or coaches with the biggest mouths or who think they know it all, give them a whistle and get them to umpire your games and then get on this site and complain about the calls you don't agree with.

Never criticise someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes.

And until you coach a perfect game or your players play the perfect game, expect mistakes from referees too.

Isaac, your joke is quite funny but I wonder if you missed the OP point.
I think he is saying situations like a defender playing legal defense & the offensive player forces contact and get's bailed out with a defensive foul can be frustrating.

It's a bit like in football when the full forward runs in to the defender & then as soon as the defender places contact a free is called.

It's not an easy part of umpiring to have the courage to not blow the call on the defense if the offensive player has caused the contact & the defender is legal but I think when they get it right more often then they become elite officials
