52k Adl v Syd, would Ch 10 be happy with this?

52k National ratings for Sundays game. Adelaide v Sydney.

Is that a good TV ratings figure?

Would Channel 10 be happy with that?

It's reasonable for how little is put into the broadcast and how little is paid for the rights.

A League Sunday 54k

A League Friday night 190k

Channel 10 don't even mention the NBL on their own news services what chance does the NBL have.

The NBL needs to be pulling 100k plus to be in contention. The fact that it is getting the numbers it does in the face of no broadcaster support is encouraging.

I think the more accurate question is 'would Ch10 give a fire truck?'

Ch 7 had 3 basketball new items last night including the Sixers and it wasn't too short either. Could it be that they are taking the contract ?

Seven basically need something to put up against Nein's cricket broadcasts. Wouldn't surprise me if they were looking at the NBL because the potential is there.

If they do get the broadcast rights I hope they do a better job than Ten have.

Boti did say last season 7 would show it on their 7mate channel because they're going to brand that an all-sport channel.

Just imagine if the NBL got a tenth of the promotion the BBL does...

The reality is that it doesn't get promotion because it doesn't rate.

Get one Asian player per team, have their salaries guaranteed by the NBL and the ratings in Asia will dwarf the current figures in Australia. 2 Million people watching two Australian teams play is something the A-League and cricket will never manage.

7mate as an all sports channel would be awesome. Good move to fill in the FTA void left by One after Murdoch moved in and influenced Ten to drop the sports format to protect Fox Sports. Prick.

After they go 24/7 please drop the 7mate name as it is truly awful and we are all good. Oh and decent content of course.

Curtley good idea but don't use cricket or soccer as an example. Millions of Indians watch our cricket and millions of East Asians the A-League, but replace those two with AFL & NRL and you are on the money.

Good idea by Seven Network if they are looking at a 24/7 FTA sports network. There is a glaring void after One ended its all sports channel after Murdoch bought into Ten and scrapped the format to protect Fox Sports. Despicable.

Although change the name from 7mate to something else as it truly awful. Oh and buy decent content, don't go as cheap as One did.

Looking forward to it Seven.

The ratings are not nationally as it is only for 5 metro main TV markets.
FYI 13:30 1 Dec 14 - Ten actually do mention it on their news from time to time
Anonymous 14:04 1 Dec 14 - It doesn't mean anything as to whether Seven would have the rights
HoldenV8 14:32 1 Dec 14 - There is no potential for FTA at all as it is a niche sport
Anonymous 15:01 1 Dec 14 - Seven won't turn 7mate into a sports channel as he is dreaming. Seven didn't put in a bid for Rugby Union TV rights, MotoGP, lost F1 TV deal to Ten and Foxtel but bidded for V8s late last year but James warburton has had enough of treating the sport with contempt. The only chance for Seven is Netball, NBL and depending on the outcome of AFL and NRL. All Seven are going is for minor sport that should really be on Foxtel
Anonymous 16:32 1 Dec 14 - But Fox Sports will own Ten in a matter of days or weeks. And frankly, I don't mind niche sports going to Foxtel. But Hamish McLennan did promise live sport and changes to One

The product on court isn't as good as it was last season. Can't really justify great ratings when this is the case. However 52 K for a sunday, as far as NBL trends go, isn't terrible for the NBL. But it's not competing with A league, AFL or cricket any time soon. If 7mate pick it up, would be cool. But the league still has a lot to figure out before any broadcaster could have success with it. especially at board level.

52K is as good or better than quite a few A-league and cricket broadcasts, problem is b'ball doesn't have the big rating games to offset the small ones.

William the problem is Fox is a monopoly for domestic leagues. If 7mate crank up the sports then at least the NBL (potentially) has two suitors instead of going cap in hand to Fox who will offer minimum $ again.

Anonymous 19:15 2 Dec 14 - Foxtel will always outbid FTA for sports rights. The governing bodies will always take the broadcaster that pays the most amount of money

Foxtel doesn't always outbid FTA for sports, in fact the biggest dollars in this country come from FTA. However, in terms of lower profile sports there is more incentive for Fox to bid higher than FTA in many cases.

Personally I think the NBL will be a bit gun shy when it comes to Fox Sports. When they gave them the broadcast rights 15 years ago it was the start of the decline of the league because they immediately lost a lot of the casual fans who were exposed to it through television.

Sure, there are a lot more Foxtel subscribers today than there was back then, but the NBL are only just starting to claw their way back. To go to Fox will once again restrict their television audience to those who subscribe......which is still less than half of the potential viewers on FTA.

Personally, I'm hoping Seven get the rights after this season.
