Rd 16: United vs Crocs

Melbourne are 1-1 against the Crocs on the season, losing in Round 3 by 11 points before exacting their revenge by 4 points in Round 9. That victory came at home and they will be looking to again exploit Townsville's woeful 2-9 road record.

Melbourne has too much to play for to drop this one. United by 8 is my call.

Preview: United hoping to consolidate fourth spot against Crocs

No Walker, but McRae the danger man. Crocs needed Friday night for confidence.

I'm hoping for Crocs, but realistically United have too many weapons of choice

The Crocs are frustrating to watch, so good at times, so bad at others. If they rebound the way they have the past couple of games and actually hit a few triples they could well win, but they're too unpredictable to tip, I'm going with Melbourne.

Well that has certainly kept it interesting.
Most would have pencilled this in for a MU win, but this livens up the battler for 4th.

Looking at the run home, you almost think the 36ers will get 3rd. Insane form at the right time. Perth look painfully bad, and United, well they have been like this all season. Love the NBL anything can happen.

Well at least we learnt something this week about Shawn Dennis, he does have the capability to learn: Djeric subbed out with 4mins left never to be seen again. Too bad you played him in the crunch on Friday *sigh*

Coming of age performance for blanchfield, 27 points 13 rebounds 2 steals 1 block 50 percent shooting and 5 of 10 from 3. He should be in the running for most improved this year for sure.

'United' hit by the karma bus while living the lie during Heritage round!

The usual game introduction ending in 'respect' noted all Victorian clubs that had played previously in the NBL. But does it mean some are respected more than others if you're happy to hang the Tigers championship banners and retired singlets of Tiger players, however similar artifacts from all those other respected clubs aren't on display.

Sorry United, either your heritage is the Tigers or all former Victorian clubs, you can't have it both ways.

Haha KET i see what your saying, but ill give benefit of the doubt think he means the 36ers! We haven't done anything yet, Crocs on feb 1 is huge now as every game will be, but take them remotely lightly and we are in strife.

And.....I'm just saying we have to keep winning if we want to make that 4. Easier said than done though.

150% agree Anon. Its ok for United to display retired Tigers numbers and championship banners.....but they can't acknowledge them in the NBL's Heitage Round?

Fair enough paying homage to other Victorian clubs who have played in the NBL. But United were the Tigers, they weren't the Giants or Saints or Magic or Titans or Spectres or (Super)Cats or whoever else played out of Mexico.

Either way, Melbourne lost tonight and Adelaide are in the top 4 right now.

^^ +1 .... I don't care what anyone says.... United evolved ( de-evolved depending on your view) from the Tigers .... To not acknowledge them during heritage week is a slap in the face to the history of the club. I feel for the likes or Copes, Gaze(s) Bradtke, Simmons etc who never got a mention. During the broadcast of the Crocs V Cats game they acknowledged some of the great performances and players of both the Suns and Crocs era... This should of been done with United/Tigers also

Melbourne tigers ( Lindsay) refused to join the NBL in 1978 as Lindsay Gaze ( who was the then GM of the VBA) wanted to focus on the VBA as the premier basketball competition in Australia. He actively worked against the competition for the first 3 years - and then the others did not really want him in when he changed his mind.

Only St Kilda and Nunawading jumped in straight away in '78/79, Coburg fought to get in for the second season in 1980 and even Geelong in '82 and Frankstown in '83 jumped in before Lindsay could bring himself to say he was wrong and get the tigers in in 1984.

not sorry personally to see tigers history diminished, but that's just me.

A sloppy second half from Melbourne United has hurt possibly their biggest chance of the season to solidify their playoff spot after their 81-69 defeat at the hands of the Townsville Crocodiles on Sunday night.

Despite leading by as much as ten points during the second quarter, Melbourne once again came to an abrupt halt in the final half to register just 29 points.

It was night that was made for Todd Blanchfield who posted a career high 27 points to go along with 13 rebounds and two steals.

Disappointing Melbourne stood up by Crocs

"Well at least we learnt something this week about Shawn Dennis, he does have the capability to learn: Djeric subbed out with 4mins left never to be seen again. Too bad you played him in the crunch on Friday *sigh*"

This, this, this and this!

"Coming of age performance for blanchfield, 27 points 13 rebounds 2 steals 1 block 50 percent shooting and 5 of 10 from 3. He should be in the running for most improved this year for sure."

So this!

Contender for the All-NBL 2nd Team and will push hard for a Boomers spot this year if a couple of mainstayers are unavailable.
