People have been asking this for a decade. I'm sure there is a thread you could have found with the search tool

More money in the football codes. Cricket has had the same issues. In WA, large % of the talented junior cricketers choose AFL. More money, more fame and at a earlier age.

Adding to the suggestions above... Selfish &/or incompetent club boards. Leaders out of their depth at Basketball Australia & the accessibility of the NBA is at unprecedented levels.

Free to air LIVE tv changes the Australian cultures perception of any sport. wsithout your sport is dead, wont even get the gamblers to watch as they only bet on live events now.

Because that's a fundamentally flawed association.
Their is limited correlation between junior participation and what thrives as a crowd-drawing sport.

when Australia watches sport on tv, they want to see the best at that particular sport....

eg: Aussies love Rugby League , yet vast majority of fans wouldnt watch a french league match....why?, because it doesnt represent the best in that sport.

Because the NBA is accessible now for Australians to actually play in and League Pass is only a mouse click away, the NBL will never be as popular as it once was.

If the NBA was shown here on FTA again, basketball would be more popular in Australia once again. a little bit of this may even rub off on the NBL. But it still wouldnt get back to the late 80s early 90s glory days.

Agree with billy. Can't see too many people would watch the yanks play cricket or rugby league. Obviously the NBA is far more accessible nowadays as well.

I think too people forget how big MJ made basketball so watchable to the world, and so many people got on board the game.

Dazz is correct, the two biggest drawing sports in Australia (TV and crowds) are not near the highest in terms of participation (soccer, basketball, netball).

Likewise NFL football has very small participation, but is the most attended sports league in the world, with accompanying success on TV.

But the other part of the question is reasonable. You can just out the AUS part. Why is pro-ball struggling?

It struggles in many parts of the world from what i understand. I remember years ago Lindsay when asked about our crowds said our crowds were good compared to many leagues in the world.

Obviously taking the NBA out of this, different product to the rest of the world.

Crowds are also relative, I believe, to the sport itself, the location and population base and the level of tribal or passionate fan base following.

Here in Australia a Pro Sport crowd seen as good compared to one that isn't is vastly different for many sports in comparison.

When we ask the question,'why is pro ball struggling?' we need to be more specific and not only focus on participation levels IMHO...
