Why not Perth as the home for the Chinese team?

Whilst pleased with the recent idea about a Chinese team in the NBL, I think that instead of Gold Coast, why not make the Australian home/base for this side Perth? These are the reasons why Perth should be chosen:

- Perth has the same timezone as China, so where they host games in Australia it will be perfect prime time viewing in China;
- Perth and China already have very strong commercial/corporate/government links due to the iron ore/resources connection;
- Perth has arguably the most passionate NBL supporter base in Australia;
- Because of the interest in basketball in Perth, there was already discussion about having a second side. There was questions about whether the Perth market was big enough to support two sides, but as this side would have the Chinese supporter base, this would effectively be having "1.5 teams" in Perth as opposed to two;
- Perth already has a good Chinese/Asian population and visitors. Perth also has the Crown Casino, which I understand is attractive to the Asian high roller customer segment;
- Gold Coast is known for not being a good sports town. Huge track record of teams folding or not being well supported there. The party atmosphere also doesn't seem conducive to host a team of young professional sporting stars. The culture and performance of the Gold Coast Suns appears to be an indicator of that.

I think it's better off in a town that doesn't have an NBL team already.

I agree with the the OP, if they have the same time zone it should be a given they play there. I only think this Chinese team should go ahead if they get a big money TV deal otherwise forgettaboutit!

What are they really going to use it as a base for really? A satellite office? A main stop over for when they have multiple away games in a row? Would they be playing any actual games out of that venue and if so, what is the point of them being from China then?

Sounds like a lot of expense to throw onto teams without, as the previous Anon brought up, a large cash injection from somewhere...

Without their star ex-NBA/American players, have any CBA teams actually had any success over here?

The Gold Coast have shown that they poorly support their own current and past sports teams. Why would they support a Chinese team. Hope the NBL aren't expecting anything attendance wise.

There is nothing to indicate from the PR that this Chinese team will ever play a full season in the NBL.

The whole concept makes no sense whatsoever.

Lets assume for the sake of argument that you can somehow find the millions needed to make this team work, including paying for the horrendous travel expenses. Either some Chinese Billionaire, or because the Chinese TV rights are somehow absolutely stellar.
Why would you "base" it anywhere but China?
Its hard enough getting people to turn out and watch NBL, wtf would they turn out to watch a Chinese team that just happened to be playing some games in their town?

This is simply yet another example of LK and his mate Jezza demonstrating that they know absolutely SFA about running basketball.

Dazz, he has been pretty damn good at running a previously broken league so far. Just realx and see what happens.

So the China team would not play a full season, would not be eligible for finals or their win loss ratio counted in the comp,

So why bother???? all it will do is add more expense onto already strained financial burdens on the existing teams in the comp to travel to Perth to play them

NBL is a national basketball league, and whilst their are certainly plenty of Asian connections in Australia ... China does not YET fully own all of Australia to be considered part of the nation.

Well I hope not anyway !!!

Gold Coast Suns will move to Cairns within the next 5-10 years. Gold Coast is a sporting graveyard.

Agree that the GC is a sporting wasteland, but Cairns doesn't have the infrastructure, corporate or fan numbers to support an AFL team fulltime - certainly not without huge backing from the league.

Why is everyone making this assumption?

There is not one mention of will they play a full NBL season anywhere. I have asked several times and yet to get an answer to this question.
"It would also have a strong connection with the Gold Coast, where it would be based when in Australia and play at least SOME games."

Of course they will play the whole season. The rest of the games will be in China. Use your brains

Is anyone suggesting that we play the pre-season blitz in China and gauge interest from that?

I like the idea of a second Perth team but not when we are so limited in teams to start with, I would rather see Geelong get a fair dinkum stadium and re-entry into the league than Perth host it's second team.

Gold Coast I like in theory if we can get backers to pay for it and they stick around but other than that I agree that Gold Coast is a graveyard for sporting teams and is just meant to be too fun to be taken seriously

It seems that at least one team will play a few games across China. How that will work will be a logistical nightmare.
Selling games to various cities across China is a joke.
The China B team and the CBA would have to fund it and there would be no guarantee that there would be aussie refs involved.
If China were seen to be weak and lose face in the NBL then they could simply walk.
Lot more to it the Kestleman has even thought about I reckon

Has anyone specifically said that Brisbane will play a full season?

The obvious assumption should be that they will, not that they won't.

being in perth, all teams travelling expenses are increased. IF it were to happen, the team would need to be on the east coast.
