Perth v Adelaide 5/11

Adelaide travel to Perth in what will be an important game for both teams.

Casey Prather tearing it up and keeping those pesky sandgropers entertained will be hard to contain. Much like trying to stop an ex wife who still has your credit card details. Damien Martin has come off of his death bed to saddle up for this gunfight. Maybe the Sixers need some silver bullets and a clove of garlic to stop him.

Perth games seem to be won and lost in the key. Good news for Cats fans, but not so good for Sixers fans. Perth's strength is their D and Adelaide's weakness is their D.

Sixers need to come out of the blocks fighting to steal a win tonight. I'm pretty sure the Sixers are the younger team running around and the "silver" cats are the oldest roster.

You guys know me well enough, I'm not going to tip a Cats win.....

With no Creek, Teys and Ferguson will have to do a bloody good job on Prather if we are to have any chance. However, that will probably be unlikely and JJ and Martin will probably have season highs.

Maybe you tuned out after such a massive lead that Perth had at half time?

Loved the fightback from the 36ers and competed better on the boards. Big shots from both teams! Youth from the 36ers shows in clutch moments throughout the game :(

Shame NBL refs are so inconsistent both ways and affect te game as a whole. In this case, choosing not to call a foul on sobey's drive and just go with 'ole we'all give them the side ball even though we know it came off him until the pressure for the review came, and then the ludicrous charge call on Randle to spoil such an exciting finish :( (Perf had some rough ones go against them too eg cross court)

Tempo, was there any betting/rigging going on in this game?

Melbourne is trash lol, their 3 wins over Adelaide, Illawarra and Brisbane showed that they are capable and contenders. Things generally don't quite go so well in basketball when your best player is out injured. (Not to mention two others right now. Just to help the simpletons with their maths that's 3 players from an 11 man roster).

Why is there such a bunch of insecure boys on here worrying about measuring the size of one's package, eg claim who's team is better after 6/7 games!?

Sit back and enjoy the games! As the season progresses the cream will rise, then beat your chest at that point. Seems like most teams can almost beat any team at the moment with so many new players and player movement, many injuries to key players so early in the season too.

So glad for basketball becoming prominent again through the NBL, media side on the up, players and quality etc. Just wish we'd get some more consistent reffing as a whole and not lose the 10 secs of play when a team hits the front after being down all game!!! ;P

Credit to the 6's for hanging in there and mounting a comeback.

And WTF is wrong with the Cats? Ok, so they lost Martin, but for the best defensive team in the league, surely they should be able to handle just a little of their own medicine?

@LV - you do realise Perth were pretty much without Martin for a majority of the game(he played 12 mins) and Kenny.

Both teams were without key player due to injury.
Both teams got garbage calls during the game.

Tough loss for 36ers, they did well to get back in the game and I couldn't help but clap Randle, he was poetry in motion. Perth just keep finding ways to win.

This comp is tight this year....there is no "daylight" apart from 7th and the Hawks, but even that can change.

Randle is ridiculous, was amazing to watch. Would have loved to see the battle between him and a fit Damo.

Refs were absolutely shocking, some of the worst I've seen. Will admit we probably got a bit lucky on the charge at the end, but it made up for so many ridiculous calls/non-calls during the game. I understand refs aren't always perfect, but I can't believe the amount of completely ridiculous decisions in that game.

Regardless of the reffing though we probably should have put the game away early and won comfortably, credit to Adelaide for coming back the way they did. Was also good to see Johnson play so well, hopefully he can keep improving each game from here.

The refereeing was atrocious. Do they do it deliberately, or is it just subconscious thing??? Clearly favoured the 6's throughout the game, as they were getting pummelled, then became more even-handed as the game got closer, and then I suspect favoured the cats when they released they might actually have turned the game.

But still had to be almost physically dragged to the video review for that epically bogus call. Seriously, how the heck could not one of the refs see what everyone else did? That the ball clearly came off the 6's player? Don't think ANYONE was the slightest surprised when they overturned the call on review.

that's how I felt watching too. Almost like they wanted to help Adelaide get back in the game to keep it interesting, then at the end when Randle took over and looked like he could win it on his own the refs went "oh **** we over did it" then gave Matty Knight the charge.

Yep, the crosscourt was a howler, a ref reverting to old habits. The Knight charge call at the end was a bit the same, after the refs had called charge/block in favour of the offence all night he went back to the old way of favouring the guy who fell over!

Not to worry, amazing game, so many momentum shifts and big plays. Adelaide are doing a hell of a job with the players they have out.

The shorter umpire of the 3 is useless. Makes the worst calls and then makes makeup calls. How the nbl and the new full timers/senior referee haven't taught this guy anything shows how poor the whole system is.

The refs were very chatty as well I noticed. Lots of warnings issued to both teams about their complaints. I heard one to Joey was "if you question my integrity again I'm going to tech you, you hear me?"

Was just a bit of a fiery atmosphere all around and I think it was getting to everyone. The sixers get pretty agro at each other as well I noticed, but I think in a good competitive way

The reffing was incredibly bad.
A shame given it was Saturday night, 12,000 people at Perth arena, a close game and a guy like Randle lighting it up. That was a real spectacle for the NBL and it was let down by bad calls.

In reality, the bad calls just added to the drama of the game. It was the best spectacle of the year without a doubt. Great to watch.

Funny thing is, the reffing in Cairns was much much worse. The refs just let a heap of contact go and it turned into an ugly rugby game. Thankfully it was a tight contest.

In Perth, they called it clean and that allowed for a much more skilful game of basketball where offensive talent got to shine. That's unusual for a game in Perth.

It was unfortunate there were some very obvious errors - the crosscourt, the Knight charge and the three-pointer counting well after a foul occurred sticking in my memory - but I'd much prefer what happened in Perth over the display in Cairns.

Three things I learned watching last night's game.....

1. Randle is carrying the 36ers. Without him we'd be dead last.

2. We rely too much on DJ to get the boards. No DJ last night and Perth owned us there.

3. As good as Perth are, last night showed how much they rely on Damien Martin. When he got injured they looked lost and it was only dubious refereeing that saved them.

I wonder what Ken Cole would have said about that bogus charge call if he was coaching Adelaide??

36ers WASTED Randles effort last night.

That rebounding effort was dismal.

The concern is that they were much more motivated to collect offensive boards than defensive boards.

Why? Because that is all what this team is. Thats all they are interested in....scoring and couldnt give a rats about defending.

This team will finish dead last because there coach is the most delusional in the NBL

Of course Perth suffered without Martin. That's what happens when you lose a great player, particularly during the game. Even worse is there was no suitable replacement for him (Wroe did quite well but is still a rookie/DP).

I don't know any team in the league who would still be competitive with no decent point guard.

I agree the officiating in the Cairns game was far far worse, but the officiating in this game ultimately meant Adelaide was robbed a legitimate chance to win.

Officials can't be making that blatant an error in such a defining moment of a game (notwithstanding the other horrible errors called against both teams throughout). It ruined the match and one of the all-time great individual offensive performances in recent memory.

Trevor Gleeson: "It's the best (home court advantage) in the league, without a question The support... and they had a lot to cheer about with the threes and they had a lot to boo - with the (Adelaide) guys doing what they were doing - I can’t say too much. But I think they were well justified with their judgement with the booing."

So if you can't say too much, why say anything?? smh.

So what were the Adelaide players doing to deserve the booing, Randle in particular?

Nothing, from where I was sitting. But home crowds always look for a villain and boo them to put them off their game. Obviously didn't work last night but will work nine times out of ten in Perth. Ervin, Hodge and Homicide were always targeted and they played some shockers in Perth in their careers.

To be honest, every time Randle silenced the boos, the people around me were actually applauding his play.

As was I. It was very half-hearted booing anyway. It's not like Randle even did anything wrong ... he just got a nice call from the ref. But it adds to the atmosphere in the Arena so it's all good. (in reality Randle seems like the type to be further spurred on by booing so I very much doubt it had any negative effect on him)
One thing I was thinking last night though is that the constant booing just might have been a factor in that "charge" that Knight took.

Either way it was all great theatre.

How costly was that Ferguson reaching foul on Knight just before half time. Instead of the clock likely running out, it ended up gifting the Wildcats 2 free throws and then this...

I don't disagree re. the booing. Sure it adds to the atmosphere and there's nothing wrong with it.

Just seems strange that Gleeson thought it needed to be brought up post-game insinuating the Adelaide players were doing something untoward and deserved to be booed when there was certainly no obvious nasty incident or anything.

That was a cracking game. Luckily I got to watch from right behind the Sixers bench. I can't help but think that atrocious charge call against Randle on Knight which virtually decided the game was a makeup call for the incorrect call earlier when Randle charged into Martin. But as KB said when I spoke to him after the game that was a terrible time in the game for a makeup call!

Really lucky to witness Randle's greatness in one of the most hostile venues in the country. After probably his best move in the 2nd qtr where he put on a dribbling exhibition and finished at the rim beautifully the Cats called a timeout. It was so awesome to see how pumped up Randle was after that move as he came to the bench.

Also just on that play where they reversed the out of bounds against Sobey in the last few minutes of the game that was a clear foul on JJ. That's the problem with going to the video. Refs will often not call fouls on the defensive player but make up for it by still giving possession to the player the ball came off. Problem is they can't do this anymore when you have video review.

Hard to get over that call on Randle. Still leaves such a bitter taste in the mouth when a great game is ruined by such homecooking.

A pity that flop warnings are given out all the time, yet when a 120kg Knight goes flopping, you get nothing. The crowd and pressure totally got to the refs. Knight is a shoe in for defender of the year with moves like that.
Would have made the game what it deserved if Randle had gone to line for shots rather than ending it in a dodgy call.

Yeah because dodgy calls can somehow be enough to bring a team back from a 16 point deficit at half time, the players playing hard has nothing to do with it. The refs were the ones shooting. Talk about stupidity.

"Dodgy calls allowed Adelaide back into the game"

So Randle hitting consecutive buckets had nothing to do with that? Should the buckets have not been counted because they're playing Perth in Perth?

No wonder he is an anonymous commenter....

Yep dodgy calls let Adelaide back in.

Cross court (3pts next possession)
Charge when defender bit on a shot fake and jumped into the shooter
Sobey missed layup no contact from wagstaff
One of the countless off ball fouls and counting the three clearly after the whistle
Charge call against cats when your player was about as set as Knight.
No call when your big guy stepped under JJ going for a massive dunk (inside the no charge circle) also robbed us of a top 10 dunk easy!

I would say you were we well and truly brought back in the game, so get over one call that didn't go your way at the end.

It is clear your team doesn't need the help, what they need is to bring it all game, much like the cats really.

The calls definitely helped them get back in the game imo, but in saying that bad calls don't give you points on the scoreboard.

Even though a lot of the dodgy calls went their way (we did get lucky on the Knight charge, but we were on the wrong end of so many rubbish decisions), Adelaide still had to capitalise on the chances they got from it and that's exactly what they did. Randle was huge for them, they definitely played great towards the end and credit to them for that and making the game so close, but no doubt that those calls played a part in being able to get so close.

There were dodgy calls and non-calls against both teams throughout the game. Adelaide didn't get back into the game as a result of the calls going their way.

However, they were denied a chance to potentially win the game because of a dodgy call.

Knight, please. Insulting someone without addressing a single point they make is a really poor effort, even for a forum, However not that unexpected.

For your information I am a level one qualified referee and comments are all from the live game, attending in person.

I never said Adelaide did not hit some excellent shots (Randle in particular) however the possessions that created those opportunities were questionable at best.

That last part may be difficult for someone with your clearly evident experience in all forms of basketball.

Who gets the credit in your notion of EARNED (nice touch with the caps too)? The referee for the "stop" or the team for taking advantage of the so called "stop"?

Because there is not one without the other.

Now i expect a response that:
-Addresses the question
-Doesn't involve capitals unless necessary
-Will demonstrate your high level of basketball acumen that I am severely lacking

Oh and just in case none of this registers, I am also a Perth fan, does announcing that make me right or unbiased? or maybe both?

They likely wouldn't have been in a position to win the game if some of the earlier dodgy calls didn't happen and cost the Cats points and opportunities. A dodgy call is a dodgy call no matter what time it happens and can cost a team a game. Whether its in the first 30sec or final 30sec it can still have a huge impact in a close game.

My opinion is yes the Knight all was probably dodgy, but it 'helped' to make up for so many earlier dodgy ones that nearly cost the cats the W.

Sobey missed layup no contact from wagstaff
To be fair, you can see why the ref was fooled; the laws of physics momentarily stopped functioning so Sobey could turn upside-down while still in the air.

All teams get dodgy calls. We all know the refs are going to make mistakes. I would just rather see the game play out all the way to the end rather than be finished early due to questionable decisions. If Knight was called for the block as he normally would be, Randle goes to the line for shots, Perth get possession and the fan walks away with "what a game" and the product delivers something we know it can.

The side-on angle shows there was contact between Sobey and Wagstaff. Some would say Sobey initiated it and didn't deserve a call, but the reality is Wagstaff didn't have legal defensive position and there was contact with the shooter.

For the life of me I don't know why Sobey didn't just cram it on his head though!

Reply #606386 | Report this post

koberulz

Was expecting the same.

You could tell just from the way Sobey's body moved that there was contact. He couldn't possibly have rotated that way without it.

You also can't possibly argue he initiated it in a universe where Tomlinson got an and-1 for elbowing Rotnei Clarke in the back today.

Yep agree, but if Adelaide doesn't score 3 pts from that cross court call then the game could play out because Adelaide would still be trailing, as they probably should have been . A bad call is a bad call, focusing on one to ignore multiple is not the solution and does not leave people going what a game.

Even the United hawks game, United down at the half get 6 straight calls. It is so obvious that refs are trying to bring teams back to make for "better" viewing, the reality is the game will ebb and flow naturally and likely even out without interference, because as identified above the overcorrection is a bad way to finish.

So seeing as your a qualified level 1 referee (what a massive achievement I might add) surely you should be able to produce a better job out on the court compared to the performance by the appointed crew. The boys obviously had a bad game, but 2 of the 3 are level 5 FIBA and the other a level 4. Slightly higher than your cute badge.

Id be pretty confident it would be running down your leg if you were out on that court... why do referees always eat their own?
