Opals go down to the US 74-63.

Very average outside shooting (3/24, 13%) cost the Opals a gold medal as they were beaten by a persistent and accurate US team.

Lisa Leslie needed 16 to get the Womens Olympic record for points scored in gold medal games, but fell short with 13 (and 8 rebounds). Tina Thompson led the US with 18 points, while Staley had 14 and Johnson was a spark off the bench with 12.

For the Opals, Penny Taylor had 16 points and 5 rebounds. Suzy Batkovic showed moments of strength and ended with 8 and 5, and Kristi Harrower had 11. Lauren Jackson struggled to 12 points (4/16 FG, 0/5 3P) but grabbed a huge 14 rebounds.

At the end of the third quarter, the Opals were within 2 points (50-52) but were pushed aside in the final quarter as the US came home.

The Opals were awarded their second consecutive silver medal
