Commonwealth Games

So basketball is in the Commonwealth Games for 2006 - about time too, those tiny South Pacific nations have been screaming out for years to be thrashed in yet another sport.

I say we treat this as a development comp, kind of like soccer at the Olympics. Ie we pick a 23 and under team with a view to picking the best performers for Beijing 2008?

You'd have Bogut, Schenscher, Newley et al all playing their guts out - and hands up who'd want to see Boy Goorj playing Jason Smith and CJ for 35 minutes against Tonga. It would achieve nothing.

And no, our team of youngsters probably wouldn't beat a full-strength NZ or Canada but you would have exposed the next generation to international senior ball which couldn't do much harm for 2008.

I'd have a mixture of youth and experience, as i'd take those young guys like, holmes, newley and kendall but i'd also play guys like sav, mackinnon, dwight, jason smith aswell

Ok, I am curious to see what The English and South African teams have to offer. Gold medal match in the mens , probably between NZ and Aus.

It would be a good opportunity for Victoria to promote it's basketball on the local level too as the games are being held in Melb.

I'd say Canada, Australia, NZ would be the medallists.

I think BG will pick a full national squad for Commonwealth Games - its a home games, and results will be expected, our bragging rights will be on teh line!!

Don't the UK have some whizkid who played in their U18 team at 15 or something similar?

Even if he does, Canada shouldn't be THAT strong, should they? They're only around the same level as us & NZ, right?

Anyhow - I think it could be a good opportunity to blood some younger players. Just as long as we don't make a disgrace of ourselves!
