TIVO - Has anyone got it?

Hey all

With new HD stations set to hit the air next year I have been looking at different options for a HD Set Top Box. My DVD recorder also crapped itself recently so I was on the look out for either a DVD Recorder or Hard Drive Recorder as well.

Now, from what I have read, TIVO solves both thoses issues as well as appearing to be very user friendly.

Does anyone have it? If so, what are your thoughts on it? Is the $700 price tag worth it?

and before anyone says it, Foxtel (and IQ) is not an option in my case.

Yes i have it but you need to have a wi fi wireless broadband to download stuff and a good antenna to allow for quality reception to gain the full benefits.

It's just like getting a top of the range video recorder but you can do so many other things weith it as well. They are going to release a movie of the months next week and other stuff will be added over time.

Worth the $700? Not really but like i said, it's better than getting a top of the range video recorder and they are about $700 in some places. .

Joe M - WiFi is no issue. Do you know if you have to use an actual TIVO WiFi adapter that they sell for about $60 or whether I use any USB WiFi adapter as I have a couple of spare ones.

Ah yes, that was my other question. Can I hook my laptop up to the TIVO box to burn stuff to DVD?

I have a Beyonwiz and it only records to the HDD but you can hook up a network via USB or network cable and copy the files across

Personally, I would get a Topfield twin-tuner PVR and purchase the "Progressbarkeys" TAP (add-on program) to extend the functionality. I have the SD Topfield and it's fantastic! I intend to replace it by an HD model when I can afford it.

It doesn't have a DVD drive but I have never actually found the need to burn TV recordings to DVD. You can, however, transfer files to a PC and play them there. If you have appropriate authoring software (e.g. Nero Professional V9), you can build a DVD from the transferred file.

We've got a Beyonwiz too.
It's basically the Australian made version without the gimmicks. Only reason 7 are pushing TIVO so much is that have shares in it.
