A ridiculous situation.

The Prather incident highlighted clearly that it was time for Matt to look at the bigger picture and bow out a champion.

Not a wise decision by Knight to play on but in some ways is fitting. It was clear this past season the Wildcats were pretty much done and if not for the late Cotton signing wouldn't have even made the playoffs.

With Cotton gone and Knight & Martin another year older they won't be a playoff team next season so it's going to be one last rodeo for Knight and possibly Martin too before starting a new era.

What other bigs are out there?

Would Perth ever attempt to get Isaac Humphries?

Knight is a known flopper and an injury faker.
All that flopping has bounced his squash and now it is stuffed. He certainly didn't fake concussion (in a critical moment for his team....you prat!).

Having him play on is ridiculous.

This guy is like a punch drunk boxer. They always feel they have one more round in them. Someone needs to step in and make this decision for him and his health. Marty needs to understand nick Marvin won't be around to pay the medical bills when he is getting constant headaches, mood swings which prevent him from getting work after basketball etc the risk at this point out ways the playing on one more season with an nbl team.

NO need to examine him what so ever. His playing history and injury history speaks for itself. His last incident where minimal contact occurred sent off alarm bells everywhere and to even someone like the anon above they can simply read the signs.
If you can't interpret the signs bad luck. Don't come hear and talk smack about things you don't know anything about.

So with the logic that no comment should be made unless you're a medical doctor. Then no comment should be made in relation to all things nbl unless you are a coach or player within the league. Knight won't have a good ending, this is so risky, the consequences are depressing. I'm sure Nick Marvin will be happy to be interviewed come 60 Minutes time when he is a sad story Australia will watch.

Well thank goodness that Knight will be listening to his Dr's and not the opinions of uninformed posters. Just like nbl coaches etc don't listen to opinions made about them by the same posters. Have a view but leave the final say to the experts. Just like after the first couple of rounds saying the sixers were done and fire Joey, if those uninformed opinions had been listened to we wouldn't have coach of the year.

And the health of a mans brain activity compared to Joey Wright and ability to not win titles are very different topics. I hope this isn't a told you so routine and knight has a graceful after basketball life.

As someone who has been involved in many concussions over the last 4 seasons in afl and rugby I am totally amazed that Knight is allowed to play on. Stunned. I would be almost 100% confident that at the elite levels of the AFL or Rugby this wouldn't happen.
I have done several courses over the last 2 seasons and there is no sense in this decision that I can see. The more concussions you get the more potential long term damage can occur.
If the medical staff that have examined him are right - fantastic. I wouldn't want to the Doctor that got it wrong.

So many silly comments.

Nobody is suggesting we know better than the doctors.
Instead I think most have a fair idea of the advice given, and we are disagreeing with Matty's decision, not is medical advice.

I can promise you that no doctor as given Matty any guarantees. They've given him an assessment of his condition, conceded he could play on for years if he doesn't get another wack, and outlined the risks if he does. Matty as decided to play on and the Wildcats have backed that.

I can't say that I disagree, because its is choice to make. However as a fan I am very concerned.
Watching him stagger around after a light rap, made me feel physically ill. I don't want to see that again.
I love the Wildcats, love watching them play including Matty, and winning their 8th Championship was something very special.
I can't imagine how sick I will feel if it turns out this cost Matty his health.

Much as I like and respect Danny Green as a person, I simply cannot get behind a sport than involves deliberately pummelling your opponent's brain. Nothing is worth that and Basketball sure isn't worth risking Matty's health.

If this ends badly which I believe it will, it will be on the Perth Wildcats and their supporters who all seem to have their heads in the sand at this point. A doctor can give a medical assessment and by technical terms give the all clear. But I'm sure that same doctor would off the record use common sense if it was their own sibling and say you are done! And I say it's on the club and fans because if there was an outcry this wouldn't be happening and he'd be paid out medically.

This topic has minimal hate for the Perth Wildcats, it's more to do with a sports team not showing adequate duty of care. The club in question simply happens to be the Perth Wildcats. I've loved to dislike Matty knight over the years as an opposition fan purely due to his excellence as a player, but now I'm concerned FOR him as a human. Untwist your opinion and get these facts right before labelling this hate.

Well said. Brett I suspect you are trolling but I will give you the benefit of the doubt. The Wildcats fan base aren't exactly gracious, they will stick it to you whenever possible, then cry "haters!". But this is offtopic as the point of the thread is a player's health.

@^ What utter crap you are spewing. Majority of the negative comments on this thread regarding Knight playing on have a negative tone towards the Wildcats. You cannot dispute that.

It's a very serious issue yes, but if the doctors deem it safe to play he should play on. Every. Single. One. Of. You. Dickheads. Would. Do. The. Same. Thing.

Hmm.. Listen to the professionals saying it is safe to continue playing sport for a living and earning 300k a year? Or retire prematurely based on internet knobs on a forum. Tough call that one fellas!

Thanks Anonymous and Anonymous.

Genuine question, not trolling. Legitimately new here.

It was an overall question, not specifically this thread. I'll leave the Matt Knight's health aside, as I have my own opinions there (psychologist, married to a psychologist. I understand duty of care pretty well). It's just that I've noticed across a variety of threads that the Wildcats seem to be universally despised, outside their own fans. Wondered why.

Cheers.

Its not that Cats fans cant handle criticism. Its just the ridiculous lengths people go to in criticising them. Apparently, according to these internet experts, the club has failed in their duty of care, despite Knight getting the all clear from the doctors, and that this will actually be great to see the smug Nick Marvin get his comeuppance.

But no, its clearly the Cats fans who are being irrational here...

The Wildcats have wasted a lot of money sending Matt to Melbourne. They only needed to consult the neuro specialists here. Those stupid guys with the letters after their names wouldn't know anything despite their qualifications and experience. And to think it is ok to clear him to play without asking the legends on this forum for an opinion is beyond belief.

The term cleared to play and off the record you your brain are 2 different things. Doctors will give a very technical analysis, but would they give their own kids the same feedback without a more humanised opinion? No, so technically he has been cleared by doctors yay realistically the chances of him ending up in great pain later compared to another athlete without the head knocks would be much greater.

Exactly. People think it is black and white but it's not. The specialist would give his opinion with qualifiers, i.e. you can possibly play but with these reprecussions down the line. The people screaming hater are so dumb, they think the medical opinion he got means there is no risk.

You don't seem to understand people are genuinely concerned and I would be concerned myself if I was Nick Marvin and something went horribly wrong and people started asking me why I signed off etc sure medically I was backed but did I ask enough doctors? Did I deep down know I had t simply say as a club we aren't comfortable and Matty would've been reluctantly ok with it etc understand the big picture not just that a doctor has said it's all good baby!

FWIW I had a conversation with Nick Marvin about this very issue a few weeks ago, and I Can say that the characterisations here of him putting results before his player's welfare are way off the mark. Seriously, do you think he wants to commit a key roster spot to a guy who he knows he could lose indefinitely at any moment? His best course of action was to seek the most highly regarded opinion(s) possible, and it seems like that is what he has tried to do.

I am really not comfortable with the idea of Knight playing next season. But what is that feeling of mine actually based on? A lot of random anecdotes, brief articles, etc. I'm certainly no expert in the field and I couldn't argue against someone who is.

Please, these people are always working even socially in the off season they know how to say the right things. Marvin is gambling with knights health. That's on him and the club if some it hung goes wrong to an extent from this point. So it is what it is, people seem passionate on both sides of this. Good luck to knight, I hope for the best and don't end up reading something sad and depressing on here or the likes of a news.com.au as a fluff piece about his physical fall from grace well after he has retired.
