What has happened to the travel rule?

After watching a few Summer League games and the Opals Asia Cup games, I am left wondering, is there even a travel rule anymore when catching the ball? I have seen people catch the ball, hop, take three more steps then finally establish what they want as their pivot foot. Have the rules been completely thrown out the window?

NBA hardly call travels in the regular season, their not going to start calling them in summer league. And the Women's Asia cup isn't the best quality players or the best quality referees so I wouldn't be using that as your yard stick

Sebastian this is no longer a NBA thing,

Watch basketball at any level, U16 Nationals, any junior games on a weekend. NBL1 for example.

Referees allow an extra one often two steps on a receive or start of a dribble without calling travels. A significant advantage to the offence.

Junior coaches have gone further and further to sagging or basically playing zones or leaving talls on split line permanently to clog up the keyway as a reaction to guards/wings being unable to compete with the footwork advantage allowed these days.

It's rampant at all levels, not just NBA.

Didn't fiba change the rules a few seasons back, the first step is a gather step and then two after that in a lay up.

Vjbl games are an absolute lottery when it comes to travel calls now. The refs seem as confused as everyone else.
Some nights they call everything and others they let them walk to the canteen and back before doing a layup. Makes it hard to coach sometimes!

And you can add the carry to this discussion now as well. It seems to be completely legal most Friday nights to have your hand on the bottom of the ball while dribbling as long as you are doing something resembling a YouTube highlight clip.

Thats a very good question.

I coach local junior comp and junior reps and so many players travel and the refs do not call it.

Even watching senior reps the same happens.

Speaking to a Technical Delegate she said that FIBA advised to take the emphasis off calling travel in the lower age groups and I believe that to be a mistake because how do the players learn if they are let go and then play somewhere and travel gets called and they get frustrated.

Also watching some of the National and world tournaments travels do not get called and it is wrong.

I agree re the calls, at all levels they can pick minute movements and at times you can do the waltz for no call.

Imo it started with Harden when he was allowed to take 4 steps on his step back, the NBA thought scoring was key to ratings so allowed it. Now scoring is out of control and makes for a lot of unwatchable games with just 3 point shooting contests.
Then all the trainers got on board and taught crazy stuff and the refs are so confused they just let it go. Now no-one knows but if you just say one of the steps was a gather it's too late.
From a fairly black and white rule it's now grey.

I remember Harden getting away with it, and LBJ giving refs an earful when they called him for too many steps. (That would have been scary to face!)

At the time, I felt that the superstars had all the power and it would be a brave ref who challenged them (as they might find their NBA reffing career shortened somewhat). Regardless, I agree with you that the NBA refs have basically given up - as long as the player scores, then anything seems to go. But that should not be an excuse for local refs to be so slack, because our rules are based on FIBA not NBA.

All of which emphasises that the NBA is a privately-run competition with its own rules and priorities, rather than a 'true' basketball competition.

The Korean women are the best at the hop, step, step on a catch.

It all starts at the top and eventually trickles down.

LeBron set the tone by carrying the ball, especially prominent early on in his career, while playing point forward during his first Cavs stint.

As a former player, defensive minded, I just could not imagine trying to be an elite defender now with all the advantages the offensive player gets. The can do a jig on the catch, a tango on take off from triple threat and then a waltz on the layup or dunk. It just isn't the same game I grew up playing.

Ah yes, and remember when basketball was no contact, at all, 20 minute halves, 1and1's, no 3pters......and now we can travel. And to top it all off, basketball is now European (FIBA-controlled), used to be an American game (or Canadian, if you prefer).
