The Pioneers are a sinking ship

Just letting everyone know (well at least anyone who cares) that the Mount Gambier Pioneers are a farce once again.

The side can't win away from home and "issues" are always coming up on road trips and seem to find their way via text message back in the Mount.

Sadly few people still care about the team and this is proven by the 3/4 empty stadium at home games.

Where to from here? Who knows, but when the coach has no experience and doesn't even have level 0 but is given the job because he was a board member, you know you're in trouble.

He still hasn't won 10 games over his 1 1/2 seasons as coach!

This is a fast sinking ship.

De Witt... The original post had me laughing out loud....

One of the many questions the original post raises is - What does doing a lvl 0 coaching course have to do with coaching in the SEABL????

Coaching courses aren't worth the paper they are written on. I can think of a number of experienced coaches without qualifications, and likewise there are plenty of coaches who have completed levels 1 and 2, who really can't coach at all.

Umm I wouldnt go as far as to say formal qualifications are worth nothing. Experience is the most important qualification but where you have 2 candidates with almost identical experience then you would go on formal qualifications.

Actual playing and / or coaching is more relevent than doing a coaching course though,

What are these issues??

Anon you are right, and I probably didn't word my last post very well. What I meant was that doing a coaching course has no bearing on one's ability to coach. It certainly might help in applying for a coaching position, although experience/knowledge is and should be the major factor.

My point was that there are some very good coaches with no qualifications, and some very ordinary coaches who have completed every course known to man.

if you have watched the team play like i have you can understand why they might be struggling!! De Witt has no idea about coaching at that level, his offenses are out dated and eally arent even his, he copied them from Sonya!
He has issues find the rigt mix of players oncourt and then when the team is on a role he makes stupid substitutions which then allows the opposition team get back in the game and then they steal the game because he panick and doesnt know what to do!!!
Another issue is that they dont play with any emotion and dont play for each other!! they dont play team defence and are selfish offensively!!
Lets be honest here, he only got the job because he was on the board and there definately was no real interview process for the role in the first place, because if there was, he couldnt be coaching right now!!! The presidents done a great job getting them financial again however he made a big mistake appointing ray and will kill the pioneers if ray isnt given the flick!!!

They have never been the same since BigJ retired. He was the bedrock the foundations were built on.

BigJ is living in Adelaide now and is assistant coach of the South Adelaide Men's team. So no he is not on the board anymore.

Quite right about the coaching accreditation and I don't think that is a major issue, but if you've seen the guy coach you know he doesn't have a clue.
He makes the same subs at the 6 min mark of each quarter and the players know that it doesn't matter if they've just hit 10 baskets in a row, they're coming out of the game.
I would think it would at least look good to say the Pioneers coach has a level 1 or 2, rather than saying he played for us in the 90s so that's good enough.
He clearly doesn't realise that the game continues to evolve.
This is a major mess

Hey Georghe, Al Westover for example and a plethora of coaches in the NBL,SEABL,NBA,Olympics make the same subs at the same time regardless of how the player is going and Al Westover or many coaches in the above leagues haven't done Level 0, 1 2 or 3.

Perhaps you should put down your crayons, watch a little Thomas the Tank Engine and when you get older and have a little experience under your belt you might come across with some sort of valid response because your not saying anything of substance.

How can u compare the experience of a Westover with that of Ray DeWit?

Pioneers are having a crisis meeting with the players tonight. None of the players are playing in a-grade tonight if their games clash.

Hey Beuller - do you watch the Pioneers games??? So Westover takes out Anstey at the six minute mark of a quarter when he's scored 10 points does he?

You're not making sense - you see the thing about Al and most other coaches in NBL/SEABL or wherever is that they have a feel for the game - the Pioneers coach doesn't have that.

He recently took out a player who had brought them back into the game with a couple of dunks and a big three pointer and then a minute later he was subbed back in because the opposition team made a run...

Why was he subbed? Just becausea guy has played maybe 8-10 minutes of game time that doesn't mean he needs to rested.
If it does it means the players aren't fit enough and not enough was doen on conditioning during the off-season.

The players don't want De Witt as coach - they want to be taught and they want to have confidence that they can play for someone who is willing to let them fight through the tough times, who changes his planning to suit the team they are playing and they want to run plays.

De Witt can't do this.

Issac, COuld you please put a stop to this crap, its getting beyond a joke and is obviously a witch hunt against De Wit from one or two with a personal agenda. Not good for basketball in general.

maybe if they had gone through the process correctly and found the best possible coach then the pioneers and ray wouldnt be in this position!! there is no witch hunt, if you have watched them and know anything about coaching then you would know he isnt the right an for the job!!! good coaches run teams according to their strengths, and not the the strengths from a team 4 years ago!! they are boring and arent going anywhere!!!

get in a coach from outside the area and who understands whts required to succeed at that level!! surely there are some coaches in adelaide that would kill for a seabl coaching job!!

This lack of "team" is nothing new in the Mt. The Pioneers have been on the same downward spiral for many years now. Two things - they still have the same core nucleus in the team, a handful of players that have been unsucessful, selfish non team players and yet they persist with them and their poor behaviour and judgement because they fit the "local" mould. Secondly, because of the "local" mould, the board have not had the balls to get someone in who is capable of coaching at that level. The rumours were rife that a serious top quality candidate had put his hand up for the role two seasons ago, but they wanted "local", so in hicksville, "local" is it. The board are 100% responsible for the demise of the club and their lack of vision in playing to the big picture with both coach and players. Hand over the SA competitor mantle in SEABL and let's see the District comp enter one State team to lift the profile of this great sport.

hicksville shut up! obviously u have no idea on the make up of the team. The same nucleus??? Only 3 players have been there for longer than this season and last, and to call them selfish obviously shows up ur lack of knowledge on the subject. Mason and Sedlock are both defence first players and have never been selfish offensive players. Jeffree when he started was a very offensive focussed player but to call him selfish on his current form is an absolute joke.
On the issue of a "top quality candidate" putting his hand up 2 yrs ago is correct. But the reason he was not signed was his asking price. Car, House and job for himself and his wife. Now point out a minor league club that can afford that.
Make sure u know ur stuff before u open that trap of yours!

45 points to Sandringham in the first quarter - the coach didn't know how to stop them and didn't have a clue how the opposition played...he was flat on his face after 6 minutes when they were down 25-3!

Enough said
