2017 FIBA Asia Cup - 08/08 Australia vs. Japan

Well here it is - the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup opener!

Boxscore: http://www.fiba.com/asiacup/2017/0808/Japan-Australia

Odds are: Australia $1.05 Japan $8.50

I don't know much about Japan - hopefully they don't replicate what their women's team did - in the Final against the Opals a player with an awful stroke goes 7/11 from three :x I imagine they'll be jacking it up against us in true mosquito fleet fashion.

This is our "toughest" test in the preliminary round as the next two are Hong Kong & Taiwan.

Japan won't stand much of a chance to win but they'll probably make things interesting for a few quarters. They have some guys with US college experience and their point guard is from the D League, so they won't be quite as laughable as everyone else. Also they've been together for a while. Having said that, Australia by 20 as they find their feet together.

Japans men's team look pretty weak for this tournament but they have a bright future.
lots of talented young blokes coming through for them.

I think they'll be a top 3 team in Asia in a few years.

So the foxtel now free trial or the livebasketball.tv for 10$ is the best options to watch?

In what terms? Best in terms of ease is Foxtel. Just turn on the remote control.

If you aren't already a foxtel subscriber. Not worth me paying a monthly subscription to watch a couple games. I don't watch TV otherwise.

Wasn't Bose from Kings setting himself up in Kazakhstan at both club and national team level, even changing his name? Even got a wife there.

Now he is completely gone from there and returned with a whimper to Aus. They must have turfed him. Going by the result vs NZ youth they need him so he probably got dumped for insulting the dictator or something non basketball related.

After I think the third timeout, where you could clearly hear on all three occassions that the Argentine head coach of Japan was talking to the players in English, with a Japanese translator beside him, one of the commentators asks the other:

"Don't you think most of the Japanese would know English?... maybe the translator is there because the coach is speaking in Spanish... Argentinian Spanish."

Send this bozo home.

The commentators started wondering where in Australia our home World Cup qualfiers will be played (not annoucned yet BA get your act together!). Of all the NBL teams to mention the American clown says this:

"Are the Crocs going to [host]? Townsville?"

Oh my.

After watching this game, even though I never do this sort of thing I thought I would give my thoughts. Obviously can´t take into account the opposition and we need to set our own standards...

Gliddon - 9
Outstanding, shot the ball well and controlled the team. We looked a bit rattled when he was off the floor.

Cadee - 8
Got good looks, knocked it down and was a scoring threat but still had some typical Cadee out of control moments

Kickert - 5
Hit some shots late and was aggressive but missed easy ones, often the ball froze with him and was beaten defensively.

Hodgson - 8
Could be a 9, dominated but was a man against boys. Was strong inside and our best interior presence.

Creek - 5
Scored a bit late when the game was done. Needs to stick to what he does best, particularly run the lanes. In the half court took poor options and was flustered handling the ball at the 3.

McCarron - 9
Couldn´t decide on 8 or 9 but was outstanding. Stuck to what he does best, took high quality shots, active on D and on the boards and ran the lanes.

Newley - 6
Anderson took the night off, Newley basically also did while playing. Wasn´t bad just didn´t do much, will slowly build into the tournament.

Kay - 8
Looked nervous early but settled into his rhythm making good passes against the zone, scoring inside and dropping a 3 with his feet set. Good signs.

Brandt - 6
Big body and big presence but looked almost deer in the headlights at times offensively. Had the ability to have the inside presence of Hodgon but didn´t.

Norton - 7
Maybe could have been a 5 or 6 based on his somewhat rattled offence, but I am basing it on D which is why he is there. Was active and disruptive.

Blanchfield - N/A
This one is a head scratcher so I am not rating him. Assumed Lemanis was giving Blanchfield the night off along with Anderson then suddenly played Blanchfield in the 4th. I think he´d put Todd to sleep so he didn´t do much when he came in and fair enough. Surely Lemanis doesn´t rate him behind the other wings?? Interesting..

It's the only problem with tournaments of this nature. There are some very weak teams.

An average Tall Blacks team (probably our C team) just beat Kazakhstan 70-49. Kazakhstan had, at one point, 13 points and 13 turnovers (and finished with 30 odd turnovers).

However, some of these teams need to start somewhere and the end goal is to develop the sport and the international game - so it will hopefully have long term benefits in some of these countries to grow the game.

I wouldn't be surprised if this team were tested a few times in this tournament. The commentators may have been swooning over them but this is the weakest Boomers team I have seen in at least 10 years by a fair margin. They'll improve over the course of the tournament, and maybe they wont be challenged but I still find them thoroughly underwhelming.

We are very 3pt focused offensively, and that is a potential Achilles heel, but we should own the glass and cause enough turnovers on D to give us easy points.

It's a weak side in terms of no one go-to guy who can create in the halfcourt though, but I think other than that it's reasonably balanced for this tourney. We would get pumped by any half-decent nation's B-team though.
