Illawarra v Adelaide

Illawarra couldn't quite knock over the Cadee show earlier in the round but have the opportunity for redemption against Adelaide today. Adelaide with a somewhat easy win over the hapless Cairns even gave Bijan Johnson his first NBL points in the game.

For those who think this will be a cake walk for Adelaide, think again. Illawarra are very competitive at home and while some of their players have seen better days, they seem to lift when they have a good night's sleep in their own bed. Illawarra has a big scalp this season in Melbourne, a win over Brisbane and Cairns as well as that 4 x OT game.

Other results have been competitive, but Adelaide did roll them a couple of games ago.

There's not much to do in Wollongong except surf, play basketball, and spill beer. Wollongong with a few older craftier players will want a slow, man on man game. Adelaide with a little younger faster legs will go for broke with a fast paced run and gun.

Illawarra has only lifted their bat for the century once this season against Cairns, otherwise their score is mid 80's, low 90's.

Should be a tight game, but hey, do I ever tip against the Sixers?

Will be competitive because its a hawks home game.
If Adelaide run and gun early and Wiley goes off again sixers could win by 25+.

Yes he did, he clearly came back for a second spray at Jett after the initial fracas and even you saw the T given for the second one.

It's on the soft side for a rejection T but he should know better.

Unfortunately this is the inevitable result of Joey's attitude.

He can coach no question. He can certainly build a team, and his style is entertaining and high-scoring.

But he refuses to push D.

If you look at how the Perth game progressed, the difference is obvious. Gleeson didn't try to outscore NZ, he tried to contain them, and it worked. Joey just keeps trying to push the O, and I'm sorry but you can't give up 40 freaking points in one quarter and think you're in with a shot.

And then, when things get tough, he loses his shit.
Any wonder his players follow suit?

Wiley shows all the signs of being a douche.

The suggestion that kicking people ought to be ignored if they did something to deserve it is comical.

Does anyone know what Coenraad's technical was for? The commentators said Coenraad and Grida were the only Illawarra players T'd up, but Adelaide had two techs as well and yet shot a technical free-throw. I'm assuming Jett was the third but they also specifically said later on that Jett wasn't T'd up.

Well that was some whacked out game.

@KR, do the commentators not get the same audio feed we hear? So many times they'd be saying they didn't know what was happening, or just getting it wrong, right after the rets had explained it.

Yes, Jett was tech'd, as were Coenraad and Grida.
Didn't look to be much in the Coenraad one, I can only assume that when he rushed in maybe he had some choice words.

I thought the 2nd on Riley was a little harsh, but I guess if you're going to tech Coenraad and Grida for rushing in, then him turning back for another go probably deserved it.

Getting ejected when your 2nd is a flop, was a bit rough too.

I don't have much sympathy for Wiley in that. Short of something supremely offensive and personal being said to him, he's theoretically in control of his actions in response to Jett. Pursued him, danced around and came back including shoving a ref. Just unnecessary. Rucker talks about the refs restraining the emotional side of the game, but leave it at flexing and the first bit of chesting. Rest is just ridiculous. Wiley has to take a lot of responsibility for how that played out.

He played a master game previously. Has himself to blame for not being able to do the same again that round.

Hawks will take a lot out of that game, but neither team seemed all that convincing despite the high scores.

Coenraad did make slight contact but his arms were by his sides. That suggests peacemaking was more his intent, and the bump was incidental to his purpose of getting in front of Wiley and slowing down the aggression

Why does everyone want to be so lenient on bad behaviour? You act like a twat you pay the penalty. Wiley just like every other players knows that if you get 2 technicals, 2 USF or 1 of each you are out. It is not up to the referee's to keep them under control. These are grown men who need to take responsibility for their actions. As Isaac said, Wiley was an idiot and got what he deserved.

Agreed LV. The situation didn't get out of hand and diffused itself quickly. One tech on Jett and Wiley to put them on notice and get on with the game. After reviewing the Round 7 game between the Illawarra Hawks and Adelaide 36ers, the NBL has determined that the ejection of Jacob Wiley was an incorrect decision.

The player should not have received two technical fouls, and instead should been assessed as a single technical foul for his role in the incident.

Wiley was ejected from the game at the 6:37 mark of the second quarter after receiving two technical fouls.

I thought Drmic came in more aggressively to a later incident than Coenraad did to that one. To cop that and then something subjective like a flop warning (where it's often getting knocked down too easily rather than faking a fall) is harsh. I think Drmic or Sobey have been in that place previously.

Goulding threw his head back on a play recently where contact wasn't even made. That's when you want to issue a tech or fine someone.
