I like it however thinking Rocci for Reid and a ? If you take Smith out for Scherf. Scherf seems to have Decent foot speed, maybe enough to play sections of games at the 4.

Her shooting and passing ability will give her space on the offence side of the floor. Defensively maybe not.

Yeah, her value is as a 5 IMO. She might have to wait for Tolo or George to go before finding room in the 12 because positionally I don't see her pushing Smith or Garbin out.
Purely on form and ability I'd happily have her in the 12 though. I think she is ready.

The WC squad was 1 forward or big heavy imo, even after Allen went down early with injury, they never found minutes for Maley. Smith was not even selected and Garbin was rarely called upon.

Why would you replace a 'retired' jackson with Scherf if the problem was guard depth, Whitcomb was spent in that China game, there was a lack of 3 pt shooting and Madgen proved that she was not capable of playing big minutes at the 1.

With
Allen, Blicavs, Maley capable of playing small 4.
Magbegor, (smith or Garbin), George playing big 4.
Magbegor, Smith, George + Tolo also play the 5.

Adding Scherf to the above means you have now 5 centre options and you end up with only 4 guards, 1 of which is Talbot who is not running the point but is another versatile 2-3-4.

In the Eurocup...

Smith is averaging 20.3 - 8.5 - 2.1 - 1.9
79 ft%, 40 3pt%, 53fg%

Just throwing it out there as a discussion point. I think she mirrors George's abilities. Not your typical 4 but can play small minutes there as a facilitor. Once george retires she is next in line at the 5. Not a bad next gen player.

Good to see Smith doing well in the Euro cup. Haven’t been keeping tabs but liked her game last WNBL season.

Agree with your thoughts. Just like to throw a different view point to keep discussion fresh.

Brondello wont change anything , one spot up for grabs only , they need to replace Jacksons spot from the WC team.

Based on from I would say that Smith would be the most likely right now .

The younger Leger-Walker and Tupaea are the keys to the New Zealand team IMO. Quality shot creators for themselves and others at their best and very entertaining. Davidson is solid in the middle, but the rest of the team is a bit eh.

Korea got best squad possible.
Japan a few injuries late on but still very good.
China looks to have a few missing, but they have depth.
Nz ok but the s5 will have to fire. The bench is young.
Taipei on the up, so too phillipines.
Lebanon likely no threat.

But late than never, was wondering where this was yesterday.

Plenty of different ways they could go, be interesting to see what they'll settle on. The depth is at 3/4 this time round

I think Game 1 starting line up will look something like: Heal/Magden/Maley/Garbin/Sherf

I'd prefer Nicholson over Magden, but at least Tess seems to be injury free. Kunek or Horvat could also fit at the 4 coming back from Europe.

Bibby 4-3
Horvat 4-3
Maley 4-3
Froling 4-3 - likely a 4-5 in asia
Garbin 4-5 - likely just a 5 in asia
Scherf 5

Lineup?
Rocci-Heal
Nicholson-Madgen-Atwell
Kunek-Bibby
Maley-Froling-Horvat
Garbin-Scherf

Very forward heavy and slow against quick opponents.
Would have had swain(the future starting sg for opals)for atwell.

Mangakahia, Reid, Blicavs, Tolo all out for different reasons who should have made it.

Swain is the big exclusion for me - would have thought the Opals needed her speed and scoring ability.

When I heard sandy chose the squad from a far, I knew all the vets and experienced players would get priority. She doesn't have faith in new youth, that is clear. we saw it with Phoenix, the opals and now NY.

I'm all good with no Swain, needs to make a bigger commitment at the defensive end. At times she can be quite inconsistent with her effort levels & can demonstrate lackadaisical 'body language’ within games.

Swain is a better defender than Heal or Madgen, even when she's half-arsing it. It shouldn’t be a barrier to her making the team.

I'm happy if we make top 4, but this team is a Sandy special. Only those who attended training camp got selected.
Madgen has not played a game for ages yet still gets selected.

At Phoenix she chose smith, barely played over Magbegor, but for the opals she chose Magbegor and no smith. Look at smith now after leaving Phoenix, -Adelaide, -poland and now -chicago. She kept all the vets for several years and ditched all the youth. Won a championship early and kept rolling with the vets over n over for several years and left them like that which is why they have been crap and in a complete rebuild.

The Same with the opals, we’ve seen many older players come back, play past due and the youth left on the fringe every tournament.

With ny she cut richards, onyenwere, Kone and Mawuli, to hold prince and thornton who hardly play.

The non selection of wnba players also frustrating as China got release of wnba players and many players left for eurobasket.

How and why Horvat is in there is a head scratcher , it's like make the Cof E and you get a green light regardless, Kunek brought in to replace Blicavs who wants a break from the BA show, not sure how she will fit in that line up though not exactly a great line up, but then it’s not going to be the best of the best they will play against Madgen still not game fit, and no Reid, but Heal in there , curiouser and curiouser as they say

Be interesting to see what he does with this group, think top 4 may be a stretch, but happy to eat my words and see them top 3

I don't mind the squad depth getting a chance. There's only 2-3 that were best 12 a year ago so it's good to see who can step up, it'll be needed. If they can't make top four then that's a concern they can try to answer before Paris.
