The Blitz. The Bubble. We've basically done a gather round every year for the past 20 years as far as I can see. The NBL is growing but not at a rate that we can expect a gather round to have any kind of flow on effect.

No. Wouldn't work in the NBL. This is the sort of initiative that requires a ton of mainstream media interest and probably lots of extra cash. Which the league doesn't have so it won't be effective enough.

They could do it quite easily otherwise if they want to do a cheap version without any media hype, it just won't equate to anything meaningful.

And why would they anyway? What's so good about it?

Unfortunately NBL just doesn't have anywhere near the traction - it’d be an expensive logistical nightmare of empty seats.

Gather round for AFL made a lot of sense: government cash $$$, an extra round which offers more for sponsors and broadcasters filtering the money down to clubs and players, everyone’s a winner.

We are seeing more commercialisation where leagues didn’t go previously - on the ground they have coles centre square, Telstra as the 50m, rebel in the goal square.

NBA they’ve gone sponsors on jerseys, court sponsors for broadcasters and soon an in-season tournament to add *even more games*

NBL could perhaps focus on commercialising that Christmas/NY festive period: games everyday and see if they can sneak a couple live games on the main channel whilst it’s non-ratings season

The NBL got 300'000 views on Christmas day - nothing to sneeze at. Marketing the league as a Christmas tradition would go a long way to building its footprint. I have no doubt the games would be FTA. Generally in a choice between sport and no sport, people will choose sport. The Christmas day games will do more for the NBL than a gather round could.

They kind of did an extended version already

What was that thing called in Feb/March 2021 in Melbourne that all the Perth fans whined about because it gave United an advantage?

The NBL Cup, was it?

Wasn't Gather Round a marketing exercise for SA/tourism? (I had to ask someone what it even was yesterday. Had no idea other than something to do with the AFL.)

NBL isn't a drawcard in the same way, so not going to be useful from that angle.

No idea either so I looked it up.

This is the part I didn't have to search for - it's a carbon copy of the Magic Weekend which originated in UK Super League about two decades ago.

Well to be fair we did go all out to win an effectively Mickey Mouse cup so that was an epic fail in hindsight.

Cats still got within an average of five points per game in the GF against United while being ridiculously injured. So much heart was on display, more so than from the winning team. Thanks for reminding us about a very proud and gutsy performance.
