Bucks fire Griffin; Gleeson becomes available?

Milwaukee have fired Coach Griffin, despite a respectable 30-13 WL record and second in the East.

Reports suggest the Bucks' drop off in defence from 4th best last year to bottom half of the league may be a contributor.

They are reportedly now looking at at Doc Rivers. As a Celtics fan, I have a lot of respect for Coach Rivers and wish him the best.

The main point however is Asst Coach Gleeson.

Does this mean he will be available (again)? Disclaimer : I do not know his contract details.

Scenarios would be :
- He stays with the Bucks unchanged.
- He is let go at season's end and is a free agent.
- He is let go at season's end and continued to be paid and will not take up another role whilst Bucks continue to pay.

Thinking Bucks will probably get up to ECF, meaning they finish in mid May.

Could Adelaide wait for Gleeson in May / June?

It's rare an entire staff gets replaced mid season, sure the coach, but the entire staff would be massive disruption to a team trying for another chip.

Doc has his own guys (Cassell) but has also shown ability to work with the established staff.

Anyone close to Trev, know what has happened to him, now that Rivers has been hired?

This is a big gamble by the Bucks. An article on CBS Sports points to Rivers being a failure everywhere he's been since Boston. It is just the opinion of a journo but the facts are the facts.

Take out the big 3 and he's been pretty bad at most spots. The season before they arrived and his last season in Orlando were terrible

Overhyped as a coach. Good luck to him but ... I don't rate him as a finals coach, except for when he had the superstars at Boston.

Fiery conversation on ESPN pointing the finger at Giannis who's baking the shots, sitting in on interviews etc.

Rivers is surely the most overrated coach in the NBA

Gleeson has a contract with Milwaukee which he'll either work through or will be be paid out. Word is that the Bucks are effectively paying for 3 head coaches - Bud/Griffin/New person.

As one East Conf exec said... the teams at the top will breathe easier with Rivers coaching the Bucks.

As a Sixers fan, I agree... he is unimaginative, uncreative, stubbornly holds to old ways and stifles the development of young players... all of which is unhelpful in the playoffs when the opposition's tactics shift & evolve over a series.

There must be something more than what we've heard.

Why would you f##k up your finals chances by bringing in a recycled Rivers who has a poor record. Was he the 'least worst’ of those available, anyway?

I like Doc, he got us 2008.

But since then his record in playoffs have been horrible.

He has had blown 3 3-1 series leads.

Also 2 x 3-2 series leads blown (outside of the above 3-1).

If Trev was bought out he'd be laughing - he's still being paid by Toronto isn't he?

Toronto are paying him to the end of June.

This gig begins from July.

Doc was probably the only experienced coach out there unless they went twilight zone and asked Bud to come back which is ridiculous on so many levels. Can't hire any other up and coming assistant during season, then there's failures like a Luke Walton (have no idea what he's doing, just an example), or are there any others broadcasting like Van Gundys, Mark Jackson etc who are even more out of touch than Doc. And because they're contenders and Giannis is now a 2 time coach killer and teammate killer (Jrue says hi), they couldn't even go left field and try Becky Hammon and make history.
So there's only Doc. Has any other team cashed in more than the 08 Celtics? Even Perkins is more famous just being part of it.

They trade Jrue Holiday (and to a lesser extent Grayson Allen) away for Damian Lillard and then the coach pays the price for a drop in their defensive ability. Must be nice to be that GM.

Here's probably a decent read about the downfall with the timeline and incidents that contributed to the knifing. And apparently Griffin felt threatened having a ready made replacement in Stotts on sideline. And ultimately Stotts would be better than Doc.

But sounds like Giannis has the same pull as LeBron. Management wanted Nurse but he said no. And in the off season he held them to ransom intimating he'd leave unless they improved leading to Holiday leaving along with the last of their draft capital plus a good role player in Allen. Compare it to the Heat who appear to vastly improve their team by trading for Scary Terry Rozier and only giving up a lottery protected first (which could be unprotected if it doesn't convey) and a terrible benched Lowry. Conspiracy theory, did the Heat sucker the Bucks into weakening them with the whole Dame saga, although it backfired with Celtics ultimately winning getting Jrue? That they didn't want to gut their roster for Dame. Suddenly the Bucks fall behind the Celtics, Sixers and Heat and Pacers holding their number.

July the season is over.

Initially he had to sit out until June, before landing the Bucks gig.

July is when the league year starts.

I can't think of a better example.

Ray Allen is the only one who actually did something afterwards and retreated out of the spotlight gracefully.

If Giannis has such power, should we even assume that Rivers will last the rest of the season?

Doc Rivers:

"Personally, to be honest I told [Bucks ownership] when they called, 'I don't understand why you’re doing this.’ And one of things they said was, ‘Well it doesn’t matter. We’ve done it now and we want you.’ And that was a tough one. That’s where you had the hesitation."
Preemptive excuses are the core of the Doc Rivers experience!
