Andrew Gaze MVP Awards Night Finalists

MVP - Bryce Cotton, Chris Goulding, Parker Jackson-Cartwright

Coach of the Year - Dean Vickerman, Justin Tatum, John Rillie

MIP - Jaylin Galloway, Sean Macdonald, Tyrell Harrison

6th Man - Ian Clark, Sean Macdonald, Will Magnay

Damian Marton DPOY - Sam Macdaniel, Shea Ili, Will Magnay

Next Gen - Alexandre Sarr, Luke Travers, Sam Froling

Thoughts on nominations and who will win each catgeory?

Personally I think Gary Clark potentially snubbed from MVP nomination and Jack McVeigh snubbed from MIP nomination.

MVP - PJC (I'll understand if Cotton wins, unfortunately for CG43 the season had two halves to it, Clark would have been a better pick)
CotY - Tatum (I'll understand if Vickerman wins)
MIP - Galloway (injuries might hurt him, in which case Harrison and then Macdonald - I like Macdonald a lot, but I think next year he is a better pick for MIP)
6th Man - Ian Clark
DPotY - Will Magnay
Next Gen - Sarr by default, Travers and Froling are both "vets" despite their age. I think Mantas from NZ was the best next star this season, but I'm not sure I understand the selection criteria for this award.

Coach of the year, for mine is Tatum by a long way. One of the greatest coaching stories in NBL history.....The turnaround mid season was unbelievable in many ways. You can understand when a club changes coach, they may win the next game, but what happened after that and considering their run, amazing!

MVP yes looking at scoring stats, you are probably right, hand it to Cotton and move on. However, Perth's entire game and every player is centred around making him score. On the defence end ie. steals, he does nothing to contribute, not even on the top list of contributors across the league. I am not sure of any other top line NBL club that does this to this extent. Melbourne, Adelaide, Phoenix etc all have stat fillers, but there is greater balance, Melbourne its JLA and Goulding etc, Adelaide its DJV and Humphris, Phoenix its Creek and Williams etc etc. So would be happy if they actually did some more thinking on MVP rather than giving it to a top scorer.

All the above candidates for other awards I agree with the players mentioned.

Vickerman said something in a press conference last week about Hukporti being the number 1 defensive rated player? Perhaps he meant United, not sure

Anyone a SpatialJam member and can confirm this?

Personally I would have McVeigh, Humphries, DJV, Hunter, Hyrum Harris all over Sean Macdonald for MIP.

He was already really good last year, nominated for 6MOY from memory?

Minutes haven't changed, points up by 1pg, bit more efficient.

Great player but he didn't 'improve' more than those other guys

Tatum for COTY Cotton for MVP Most Improved I think Trey Kell was unlucky but I would give it to McVeigh. Defensive Player Magnay, Next Gen Sarr. All NBL, Cotton, PJC, Goulding, Clark and Crawford.

PJC
Cotton
Goulding
Clark
Magnay.

Please don't give Next Gen to Sarr.
I know the NBL is still insecure and feels the need to coddle our Next Stars and put their names on things so we can claim a piece of their history in the future, but Sarr's season was clearly the weakest of the 3 nominees.

How did Rubstavicius not get nominated? And can we go back to a RotY format. It feels like Travers and Froling have been around forever.

In terms of who I believe will be picked (not who I think should get it) im going:

MVP - Cotton
COTY - vickerman
MIP - galloway or Hyrum Harris
6th Man - not sure about this, hukporti or smith
DPOY - Magnay
Next Gen - sarr

I'm with you essenx - the next gen award has lost its interest. Froling or travers getting an award seems like a travesty (excuse the pun)

Before we finish tonight, if we don't have any additional NBL hall of famers included tonight then I'll be pissed off, I think we have one one class inducted in all the time that Larry has owned the league and it's definitely time to make it a regular feature of the awards night. Dave Adkins has deserved a spot there for decades so please include him!

As for the list, wow it feels very underwhelming to see only three names to every award... make it 5 in following seasons

MVP - Bryce Cotton
COY - Justin Tatum
MIP - Jaylin Galloway
6th man - Will Magnay
DPOY - Will Magnay
Next Gen - Sam Froling (Josh Bannon is the perfect ROY if we still had it)

Those speaking events will be interesting.
Hope they're recorded.

Disagree with Pippens' take on the modern NBA though.
The 80's 90's was way more entertaining and competitive....heck, even the early to mid 2000's was a better more balanced game than today's iso, jack a 3 style of play.

To be fair, has anyone ever won MVP, or been named All-NBL 1st team, or won DPOY, or any other award while playing 2/3rds of the season?

Has it happened in the NBA? Even before the 65 game requirement?

you'll see above I predicted Tatum and would've picked him myself. But these are fair questions and no-one should begrudge Vickerman who's team has been clear on top all year, even after some injuries early on

Breakers two players in first team, Lamb missed the last couple but they basically played every game to finish sixth. They both deserved their spot but it shows me the under achievement of the breakers.
I think overall they get most the awards close to right, it's always hard and as Kolzee says it’s really a popularity award but please count all rounds from start to finish.

MVP: Cotton - easy choice

COY: Vickerman - had no problem with him or Tatum.

DPOY: Ili - right choice

Next generation: Froling - right choice. Have a problem with the criteria for this award should be games played along with age cap on it.

MIP: MacDonald - should've been Galloway or Harrison. MacDonalds stats didn’t improve that much

6MOY: Clark right choice

First Team: PJC, Cotton, Goulding, Lamb, Clark - having two breakers in it when they came 6th is a problem. Would’ve had JLA, Creek or McVeigh instead of Lamb.

Second Team: Doyle, Sobey, McVeigh, Creek, JLA - would’ve had Adams instead of Doyle or Sobey as inconsistent as Adams and Sydney were.

I feel like I am the only one to have watched the stream of this thing otherwise others would bring up how awkward the whole ceremony was. From the MC making off colour jokes all night to the bizarre and awkward attempt at crowd involvement from the 'magician' or whhatever he was that felt cheap and really didn't land at all. It was a very awkward and odd production that droned on and bored all involved. The only good thing to come of it was a health update from Homicide and the standing ovation he received, and of course Gazey going on a rant as he's proine to do. Its a bit embarrassing draggins Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant to these things to, for one they've seen things done at NBA level for decades and now they're watching these bush league productions, and secondly it feels like a bad attempt to leverage credibility from them. I love the league and what they're doing, I think the increase in viewership and prevalence is fantastic. But the awards night was eye-rolling stuff.

You're not alone there, ME. I found it too forced, too artificial.

Sh*t, even playing Celebrity Heads with players trying to guess another player could at least involve a bit of off-the-cuff humour, given that the night is supposed to be all about basketball anyway. Or get one from each team playing 2K24 in a knockout format for a prize for their team. Whatever.

I watched the last hour or so, agreed the magician and the Pippen/Grant things were pretty average, except Longley saved that segment somewhat with a few nice quips

There was the chunky presenter who had a bit of a go at Felix Von Hoffe which, while clearly a joke, kind of missed the tone of the night. And then there's what he said about women with plastic surgery at the logies which seemed irrelevant and weird to even bring up. I think what misses the mark for me is that the event seems try hard. Everyone in a suit, sat around these tables, like theyre the logies or the brownlow or the grammys or something. It just feels like the league is taking itself too seriously and falling short on the execution as far as that goes. Maybe a relaxed beachfront vibe with some live music and a more family friendly or organic feel would resonate more with viewers. It all just felt very stilted and "off".
