CABL Round 14 Preview

Round 14 CABL

What a HUGE round of CABL hoops this week. 14 games over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Men's side is the biggest round for the year so far. Some huge season defining games!

Again my usual disclaimer. I am not attempting to be the worlds best writer. Simply providing my insight into this round of games, to generate some interest.

Women's

Norwood (1st 13-0) v South Adelaide (9th 1-12) Friday Night

Norwood got a scare last week, with a Hill 'less North Adelaide coming within 6 points of tarnishing their perfect record, like Simon's cat having a bowel movement on his white cashmere scarf - however Norwood were also missing a number of their lightning players, but were still good enough for the W. South registered their first win of the season, by taking out the Southern Adelaide Vodka Cup, taming the coach less Tigers by 10. Can South Adelaide extend the streak to two? Norwood will look to rest their guns, and possibly the coach - but still take this game comfortably. Last time out Norwood did it 106-58. If they rest some players it may only be 20 this time.

Woodville (7th 4-9) v Centrals (10th 1-12) Friday Night

Woodville came up big last round, taking the win from West by 22, with Katherine Perkas dropping 42 points at a disgusting 71.4% from the field. Centrals were beaten by an Eastern side without Madgen, with Tamika Dukes their standout yet again - Dukes is currently 2nd in PPG @ 19.8, and 5th in RPG @ 10.1. Last time round Woodville got up by 22 points, with a large team effort of 5 players in double figures. Again Dukes was Centrals best with 24 and 9, on 90% shooting. The key to this game is for Centrals to feed her the ball, every single time down the floor. Centrals gave up a large lead in the first half, which they couldn't turn around. The Lions seemed to have dropped off the longer the season is going and I except Woodville who are on the up, to take this game. Warriors by 15.

Eastern (3rd 10-3) v South Adelaide (9th 1-12) Saturday Night

Eastern are in rare territory for their club of recent times, sitting a game clear in 3rd position. The Mavs will still be without Madgen for this game, however based on their form without her, they have more depth that perceived. Last time round with Tess Eastern won 79-40 with Madgen dropping 27 and 18; however she had help in Wilson and Tarran combining for 35 between them. South really are a team of role players; however they are missing some key pieces to really allow them to complete with the top five. Look for Eastern to continue their unrivaled form and register win number 11 for the season. South to slump to 1-14, however should still avoid the spoon.

Norwood (1st 13-0) v West Adelaide (6th 5-8) Saturday Night

West are coming off a 20 point drubbing by 7th placed Woodville. Their defense on Perkas last week left a lot to be desired, allowing 51% from the field by Woodville in the Warriors best offensive efficiency all season. As a team they only managed to pull 22 boards for the game, this also includes only 4 of second half rebounds, whilst they allowed 7 offensive boards. The whole second half effort by West was lacking, and deserved the pasting they received. Last time round the Flames had their second closest scare of the season, only getting up by 9, however West's lineup has changed since then, and it has all been downhill. Norwood will have looked to rest their guns the night before, and after the scare of last game I would assume they would be playing at least 1 of the 2 games for the weekend, and this will be the one. If Norwood's stars play, West may be in for one hell of a night if they perform like they did last weekend. Norwood by 34.

Southern (8th 3-10) v Sturt (2nd 11-2) Saturday Night

The Tigers continue on their disappointing but predictable season. After only just getting by the Lions (now 10th) and getting done by the Panthers (9th), it’s hard to imagine the slide will stop tonight. Sturt are coming off a big win against the Feagles last round, in what was a very close game in all areas. Sturt got the advantage by getting to the line, shooting 18 extra free throws. 4 players in double figures, with Shaw dropping a double double of 20 and 10 but shooting a paltry 27%. Last time round Sturt got up big 101-55, Southern giving up 62 points in 2 quarters. I can’t see this result getting any better for the Tigers. Denelle Fawcett still Southerns best along with Zecevic and Rutland, however she is prone to turning the ball over, but I guess when you’re handling it as much as she has to, and passing to statues, turnovers are going to be prominent. Sabres by 41.

Woodville (7th 4-9) v Sturt (2nd 11-2) Sunday Day

Last time round Sturt got up 65-38 and forced Woodville to shoot a season low 22% from the field and throw the ball away 25 times. Woodville have improved as the season has gone on, but I except the result to remain the same. Sturt to win by 20.

Forestville (4th 9-4) v North (5th 8-5) Sunday Day

MOTR. The Eagles were given a reality check last week by the Sabres, which may just serve as a wakeup call to Sharon and the Girls, and get the geared up for finals action. The Eagles had 4 players in double figures, but struggled to shoot a good enough percentage when it counted. Fergus and Newley combined for 27 points, but shot at 11/36, but Angley and Robinson combined for 30 points on 11/21. The Eagles have the ability to compete come August, but need to run the ball through the right hands at the right time. They also only went to the line 8 times, and shot at 50%, which is enough to make any coach yell like Sharon. North pushed Norwood in a match up that saw both teams missing critical pieces. Shooting 2/19 three balls isn’t going to win you too many games. Peris was North’s best with 22 and 16 at 73%, but lacked any help outside. Last time round a full strength North beat a full strength Forestville 64-44. The Eagles shooting the lights out - literally it was black inside and they couldn’t see anything - as they shot 24.6%. With no Thompson again, the Eagles will lack quality offensive options. North to win by 15 to tie up 4th spot.

Men's

Norwood (8th 5-8) v South (9th 1-12)

Norwood on a two-game season ending losing streak, the first time they will miss finals since 2005. South Adelaide on an 8 game losing streak that echoes the previous years gone past, with a team that whilst competitive, just isn’t a finals contender. Last time round Norwood got the win 80-63 with the margin being built in the first half only. Mackenzie was south’s best with 21 and 11 but on 23 shots, that sort of efficiency isn't going to win you games. Norwood had four players in double figures; however it’s the same four that have carried them as far as they have. The difference in this game was shooting percentages, with South shooting 10/38 first half and Norwood going 18/41. Outside of that it was an even contest. I can't see the result of this dead rubber match going any different, with Norwood attempting for a Hail Mary season comeback, taking the W by 17 again.

Woodville (2nd 10-3) v Centrals (5th 8-5)

A hugely important game for Centrals. This game is the most important of their season so far, as a win positions them very well for the final 4 games; a loss puts them in danger of missing finals. Centrals won in unconvincing and dangerous fashion last week, due to a Kyle Miller buzzer beater to knock off the winless Mavs. Centrals had issues on the defensive end, where they couldn’t handle Scipio who honestly hasn't proven himself to be a threat, and allowing 5 Eastern players into double figures. On offense they seem patchy, with plays of brilliance, followed by a multitude of errors. Miller needs to find some touch coming into August, as he has been down on offense compared to previous years. Woodville were beaten in a top of the table clash by the Bearcats, unable to stop DJ from dropping 31 and 15. Outside of that, Woodville matched them everywhere, except for Assists. Potentially too much iso and one on one, with the need to move the ball and find options. The Doctor was Woodville’s best with 19 on 3/7 three balls. This game is very hard to call. Central’s recent form has not been good, but I think that Scotty will get them up this week, with their season in a dangerous spot. Woodville still recovering from being mauled by DJ. Centrals in an upset by 6.

Eastern (10th 0-13) v South (9th 1-12)

Eastern were the maidiest of brides maids’ last week, being beaten by a single digit on the buzzer. CS has clearly taken offense to my comment in regards to offensive efficiency, tearing up the last two weeks, dropping 26pts and 12 assists on 52% shooting last week. The SB's also combined for 37 points on 50% shooting and 20 boards. Last time round South got up by 21, with Boal doing his best Carmelo impersonation with 26 points on 25 shots. The decided last time round was South’s 33 free throws to Easterns 13. The rest of the game was about square. With CS improved output, and almost knocking off the Lions last week, and the Panthers having to double up, I’m calling the Mavs to get their break through win of the season by 12.

Norwood (8th 5-8) v West (1st 11-2)

Having Daniel Johnson on your team makes a big difference. Particularly when he is good for a league leading 23.4ppg and 12.6rpg. Last time round West got up 100-73 with the Sixers combining for 50 and 20 @ 59% from the field, and the Bearcats hitting 11/24 threes. That’s going to be a tough game for any opponent. The same four Norwood soldiers performed their customary roles, however with no help of the bench, and no depth, the Flames are in trouble again. West should have no problems here, even with JC, im going with the Bearcats by 20. Goodnight flames.

Southern (7th 7-6) v Sturt (6th 7-6)

Equal MOTR. What a huge season decider this is for these two sides. The Winner will keep their season alive, the loser, all but done. With the other games this round, the winner of this game has the potential to jump into 4th spot. Both teams got the W last round, with Southern beating South by 15; with Sam McDaniel again Southerns best with 21 and 11 @ 53%, but again Southern have some players that simply should not ever shoot the rock... ever. That is what will hurt them this season, if they can’t iron out their offensive options. Sturt beat a highly fancied full strength Eagles outfit. Daly and Dougherty combined for 44 whilst holding Gibson and Rios to 32 and 2/15 three balls. Last time round Southern got the W by 10 at Pasadena, with the Sabres unable to stop Michael Florance in his best game for the season, 26 points and 9 boards on 42% shooting in 28 minutes of play. The loss of Sam Johns from this game, but the inclusion of McDaniel means that Southern should suit a similar line up. Sturt did a good job of distributing the load, with 5 players in double figures, but no player took over the game and made the impact needed. Southern outrebounded Sturt 49-35 last game, and got to the line 10 times more and that was the difference in the game. However taking into account recent form, and quality of opposition played, Sturt are miles ahead. Southern stagnant on offence, and you cannot rely of Florance to drop 26 each week to get the W. I think Sturt are the better unit at this point in time, and should get the important W. But Sturt always bring out the best in this Southern outfit. Especially with the history of the Under 23 rivalry, this game will be a ripsnorter. Sabres by 4.

Woodville (2nd 10-3) v Sturt (6th 7-6)

Last time round Sturt got the W 79-75, on the back of a 31 point 63% first quater effort. Daly and Dougherty combined for 39 points @ 50%, and Wyatt and Pilkington combined for 36 points on 54%. This game was dictated by Sturts fast start, which I don’t think will be evident on the back end of a road double for them. Both teams have important tough match ups the night before, and this game also holds significant important to shaping the season. I think Woodville get beaten the nights before, and Sturt get the W the night before, which will make the Warriors hungrier to the W. Woodville by 7.

Forestville (3rd 8-5) v North (4th 8-5)

Equal MOTR. Another huge clash that really is season shaping for both sides and the top five. Forestville coming off an upset loss v the sabres, and North coming in on a two game win streak, however not convincing - only downing Norwood by 8, and Sturt by 4. The loser of this game may find themselves outside of the five come sundown on Sunday. Last time round saw the Eagles get up 75-67 with a second half comeback that sealed the game. Pero had his standard 18 points 14 rebounds on 47% shooting. He was supported by 3 other North players scoring double figures. Rios had a big game for the Eagles, dropping 25 points on 45% shooting and he had contributions from 3 other Eagles also scoring double figures. One would anticipate that Petrie should suit for North in such a critical game, and with the inclusion of Gibson, Mottram and Oakley for the Eagles, makes this one a mouth waterer. North had a huge advantage on the glass last game, pulling 20 extra boards, however the Rockets inexperience cost them 18 more turnovers with 5 players registering 5 or more. If you are to go on recent form, North look to have the edge. But with Forestville’s in's, it’s hard to see the Rockets stealing this W - with experience under pressure the big factor for the youthful Rockets. Eagles by 13.

Southern women win in an Overtime 1 point upset v Sturt.

Fawcett with 31pts, 8stl, 6ass, 5reb in another outstanding game. Zecevic also had a quality game with 19 and 9. For Sturt Lewis and Bowley both had double doubles but it wasn't enough in what was a 47 point turn around from round 5. Southerns coach was back but Sturts was missing. Rutland hit a three for Southern with 5 seconds left, Lewis then turned the ball over with Biddell getting the steal and W.

Again I have been shown up, and after a hash critique I have been put in my place. Well done to the Tigers girls.

Also Rutland before this game was a 15% three point shooter, making only 8/52 for the season.

Woodville women knocking of Sturt by 15pts today as well, so much for the women's league being predictable!
